Actually, in all seriousness.... with proper prosthetics... how about Matthew Broderick? He's got fantastic acting chops... he's talented... he's mastered Broadway (The Producers), he does a British accent very well, and he can play a very WIDE range of characters. I can totally picture him with the long cigarette, a long nose, and the single glass on his left eye.... added with a fat-suit.

I choose Matthew Broderick.... honestly.

I think it's a very left-field decision, MUCH like Heath Ledger. I think Broderick could surprise us, because we would never expect him as Penguin (just like Ledger as Joker).

Start the manips.

^ It's not as ridiculous as it sounds. I'd be interested. He's better than Hoskins and more realistic than Seymour Hoffman at least.

And he's kinda fat these days anyway.

maybe... he might fit in with the semi-weird cast that these movies seem to have. i mean the people Nolan has chosen i woulda never have thought them to play the part

how, can you watch the "The Producers" and think Broderick would be a good penguin, rather then his co-star, Nathan Lane

no f'n way nathan lane would be a good villain... id laugh my ass off

unless Lane gives us a performance we havent seen before

i know that Lane makes his living as a comedic actor, but given that comedy is tougher to pull off than drama he shouldnt find it too diffcult to play a villain.

I've always thought that The Penguin is a seriously overrated villain..His popularity comes from his name and look only. It's very hard to think of a memorable penguin story from the comics. However the same can not be said about Joker or Twoface, great characters. I have a hard time picturing Penguin in a Nolan Batman film..
Maybe they should portray him like an Al Capone mob boss..think Robert DeNiro in The Untouchables.

Where's the old Penguin thread? There's a lengthy post in there detailing why Penguin is a damn good character.

If they even do a Penguin, I think Robin Williams would/should get the role, especially since he's worked w/ Nolan in the past . . .

the main thing to keep in mind is that Nolan has been quoted as saying he doesn't think the Penguin has the right 'feel' for these films, as they're more realistically interpretted . . . that is an ironic statement since Penguin's original interpretation is pry one of the MORE realistic of the Batman villains . . . which leads me to believe that Nolan is COMPLETELY unfamiliar w/ the non-cinema incantations of the character . . .

exactly
check out this clip ( his preference, despite its comedic plot, and over done dialoged, his look, his voice, his body language) tell me this doesn't remind you of the penguin LOL

One of the problems with Penguin is the fact that he doesn't really seem like a physical threat to ol' bats. They should get someone who has a sense of "danger" about him...how about Ray Winstone?

...maybe...

when i think penquin my mind goes straight to danny devito. maybe nolan can make something out of him (should he decided to use him) but i would rather see villains that we haven't seen yet in any of the films (like how he used scarecrow, and raz and the mob bosses)
Joker of course, two-face yes, but what about the mad hatter, or a reworked poison ivy, hush and harley quin now that we have the joker.

The Penguin isn't supposed to be physically capable. He's a schemer with his fingers in many little pies. Evil pies. He's also threat to Bruce Wayne as an aristocrat and high rolling entrepreneur.

no, that'd def *** the movie... you'd have to think of a reason why they are importing the venom from south america, rather than just making it in there own city

I would still like to see the penguin being able to duke it out with batman...they have been know to do that from time to time in the comics.. There's something about Penguin being great at judo or some other stuff.

Yeah you're right. Back in the 60's. It probably involved fighting on a giant typewriter or something :o

Well they did have a few fights in the 1990's as well. It's not that I want to see the Penguin turned into Bane or anything, but to just see him as an evil business man is not enough (Rutger Hauer did that already) I just never understood how a fat little man could be any threat to batman, let alone be the boss of a gang. hmm...no, I'd rather they just didn't use him in the movies. Bring on Poison Ivy instead: she's crazy, she's gorgeous and she's lethal.

if the Joker is clearing out the mob elements in #2, I can definitely see Penguin being in #3. it's just a matter of whether Nolan wants to do that. I'd love to see a bunch of second tier villains in #3 that Batman has to mop up.

too hairy and too fat.

if he could do something about those then yeah he could be a contender.
well hair is easily taken care of with a shave, but too fat? i thought the penguin was a short fat dude, well at least he was in TAS.

Nolan considered the Penguin difficult to portray on film, explaining, "There are certain characters that are easier to mesh with the more real take on Batman we're doing. from Wikipedia

The Penguin is honestly a villain that I do not think could carry a movie as the lead bad guy no matter who plays him.
But if he is going to be in I would want someone not so known, maybe Robert Carlyle?

I remember ages ago there was talk of Bob Hoskins or Philip Seymour hoffman playing him, as a brittish arms dealer or something, selling guns to both sides of the conflict to escalate it and make himself lots of money in the process......
