This generation has been incredibly disappointing so far. I don't see it changing anytime so either.

Everyone is so risk adverse. Publishers don't even release demos anymore because they're afraid that if people can try the game, they won't buy it. I think this points to a large problem. Games aren't being designed to be fun anymore. Everyone wants their tearjerker story and cinematography. I'm glad Ready at Dawn fell flat on their faces with The Order. "Gameplay is something that... it's a game, we make games, we can't get around it." It couldn't have happened to a more deserving developer.

"This industry is fundamentally insecure about Hollywood and wants to be Hollywood… The only way to convince executives to release the money to greenlight productions is to do movie-like productions that impress them. That’s honestly why this stuff happens." - Cliff Bleszinski on The Order: 1886

I honestly wouldn't have minded if the 7th gen carried on for another 2 or 3 years. That would've meant a 10 year life cycle of the Ps3 and 11 for the 360. however, some have speculated that one of the reasons the Ps4 has been flying off the shelves faster than even the Ps2 is because consumers are/were hungry for a new console.

That could be and if that is true then is this gen going to be long to so that maybe more people will want to buy ps5 right away?

Dose any one want to make some E3 predictions for sony? I have a few.

1. $50 price cut to bring it down to $350 and with a 1TB hard drive
2. Ratchet and clank trailer with new information and a realise date. We don't really no any thing about the game yet I think that will change.
3. I think meda molicol shows off a new game and it has a realise date for either October or November.

That is all I can really think of.

It does seem like the almost annual nature of games has also become a problem. For example, Battlefield now almost releases a game every year.

Call of Duty has become an annual thing. Same with Assassin's Creed. They just churn these games out like car models.

I'd argue that was what destroyed Sonic.

People called Zelda stale, and I do wish there were bigger changes between installments, but compared to those best selling franchises, each game feels like a breath of fresh air.

Ratchet and Clank would be a welcome addition, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sony had a surprise. Like Last of Us 2. Even if it's just a teaser.

While even the worst Zelda games are better then like 90% of the rest of the games and I think the fact they only come out ever like 5 years or so compared to ever year like some of those another games is a big reason why.

While we now ratchet and clank is supposed to come out this year has while has the movie so I think we have got to get some knew news about it. I want a modnation racers 2 game but I don't know if that is going to happened. Modnation racers was like a much much better version of Mario kart and I would love a second one with bigger tracks and more weapons and maybe water levels and boats.

Exclusives aren't the only problem. It is the games in general. With Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Tomb Raider, and MGSV hitting this year, we are talking quality. If they were all coming out at the end of the year, people would be going bananas. Lets not forgot the potential of Star Fox and Zelda.

That is because you are insane. :o

But seriously, the tech was too old 3 years ago. Another 2 or 3 years would have been way, way, way too much.

Cliff was completely right about the Order and game development in general. But it doesn't apply to everyone. But the amount of money that goes into development these days would make most risk adverse.

A lot of this stuff just seems like common sense though. People don't want a game that is only 6 hours long, with non-skippable cutscenes.

A game which has a pivotal online component should have a sufficient amount of dedicated servers.

I don't even know where to begin with Unity.

When Witcher 3 was delayed a lot of people were upset, but that improved my outlook. Shows someone gives a damn about quality.

Why are they risk averse about developing new games, but a-okay with releasing buggy half-baked games?

This has to be hurting their bottom line, going by how prices are dropping. I think Unity just set a new record, which may soon be broken by The Order. The Halo Collection is now a free game you get with your Xbone, and DriveClub will be free at some point in the near future.

Because the Christmas sales are worth it for annual series.

I'll admit I'm crazy, but I'm not sure if I'd call myself insane :hmm

and yeah the tech was really old by 2013, but look at the incredible games that came out on that old ass hardware. tlou, gta5, tr reboot - if games of that delivery continued to release for a few more years, it would've just made the investment on the Ps3/360 that many more years worth it.

not that it isn't now because most games seem to be cross gen, but once the new consoles launch a lot of people are preferring buying a new console instead of getting the gimped version of a game.

That could be and if that is true then is this gen going to be long to so that maybe more people will want to buy ps5 right away?
i'm just saying what I heard man, I'm sure the length of the last gen had something to do with it but it couldn't be the only reason. The Ps4 is still going strong and could continue for all we know.

Idk I don't have any solutions other than "make better games" I don't know why these new generation games don't move me but they just don't.

I mean yeah that's just stupid. But it sells. I really don't get how people buy the new installment of CoD or even sports games every year

It's definitely not just you. One of the reasons i'm getting bloodborne is because it feels like the Ps4 is devoid of anything else worth playing.

cod turned into something annual but starting with ghosts, their streak is on an ever slight decline.

as for sports games, yeah it is annoying as hell that they come out every single year, but they sell. i'd rather they come out out with a fifa every like 2-3 years and just update the crap out of it, you know? instead of having it annually and even then releasing a world cup fifa game - INSTEAD of just adding a world cup update to 14!

Yeah I always thought that is the way to go. Even if the updates are paid DLC.

But they wont make nearly as much money so, understandably, they wont do it

Great post and I completely agree! I love games that are grand and "cinematic", but it shouldn't sacrifice gameplay to achieve that. God of War is a franchise that does it right, The Order 1886 is a game that does it completely wrong. And I definitely agree with you that Ready at Dawn deserved the failure.

The generation has been boring as hell so far, the most boring of any gen I can think of at this point. But there are a lot of potentially great games coming out in 2015 and 2016.
