PlayStation Firmware Updates

Ah, finally did it. After three excruciating days and many hours of failed download attempts I finally installed. This one was the hardest.
Thanks bro.

So I'm curious with this Cloud saving on the PS3. This means that you can copy those copy-protected saves like Killzone 2 back onto your HDD right? I've been wanting to upgrade my HDD for a while but the whole not being able to copy a few of those copy-protected 100% save files kept me from doing so. So I'd be able to renew my PS+ account, upload all my saves, then buy my new HD, back up, and transfer everything over? Please say yes. :O

Yes you can copy your copy protected data to the Cloud. I did that last night. In fact I backed up all my copy protected saves :D. You can only download them from the save once every 24 hours though but thats not an issue as Im really only using it as a backup in case my PS3 ever fails

Hooray! :applaud Thanks!

Anyone want to spill some good information to me on a good beginner guide for upgrading your PS3 HDD and possibly a great brand of drive itself. I won't be getting one for another month or so I guess, so take all the time you need. But I'd love some advice on which products have great performance and prices :woot:

Thanks! *saved for future use*

Have you upgraded yours before? I'm basically just curious about all the information being intact (like video settings, extra user accounts) that stuff shouldn't be lost right? I'm guessing that's on some reserved space of the PS3 that you can't use for anything else.

I got a Samsung 160gb in mine and have had that for about 3 years and no problems so far

I beleive all data (except copy protected content like saves and I think movie rentals) transfer over. Id sync up trophies prior to switching HDDs bc Im not sure if those will transfer

I searched around and read up on the trophy thing, syncing up is a no-brainer, but if you want the trophies to appear in your XMB comparing with a friend will apparently restore the list of games on your XMB  I hope that's true 'cause a ****e like myself would be happy about that.

Guys, my PS3 is freezing too much when I play MK online after the last update, then I have to force the restart if I want to continue playing.
I'm affraid I might lose my system anytime. Any advice?

Ahh crap, I had no idea that PS3s only read FAT32 external hard drives and so I can't back up my PS3's drive just yet :(. My 2TB ext. hdd (NTFS) I use now has about 500gb used so far and I don't have that kind of space available on my computer's internal drive to format it to FAT32. I bought a 500gb drive for my PS3 so I'm gonna have to ask around or pull some strings to get an extra ext. hdd to use in the back-up process. I have a month though, until I have to renew my PS+ to get access to those copy-protected saves in the cloud (the only reason I bought a new hdd to upgrade my PS3 anyway)

Does anyone know if Sony plans on updating their internet browser? I mean i never usually use it but yesterday i decided to check it out and i have to say that it sucks. I couldn't access any of the websites i usually go to like IGN or Facebook. And the Youtube is terrible you can't switch a video to 720 or 480 which is really disappointing. With Xbox getting a Youtube App i think Sony really needs to start stepping up on the features for the PS3.

FW 3.70

Hi everyone! As we are continuously working toward providing the best gaming and entertainment experience on PlayStation 3, I wanted to give you all a heads up on the following new features and changes coming with the next system software update (v.3.70).
To make things easier for PlayStation Plus subscribers, we’ve added the option to automate two existing features. The [Automatic Download] feature will now be called [Automatic Update] as a result of these new options.

  • A new auto upload function for online save data back-up will be added to make it easier to back-up your game save data. Under (Game), select the game for which you want to automatically upload saved data, and then press the Triangle button.
  • Also, Trophies will now sync automatically at the timing of Auto Download.

A new recommendation function will be added that enables you to share your recommendations for PlayStation Store items, such as games and videos, with PlayStation Network friends. You will be able to send messages with a store link from the product pages within the PlayStation Store.

Due to the increase in video applications being offered on PS3, we are adding a new category on the XMB called TV/Video Services. This category will include video applications such as Netflix, Hulu PLUS, and VUDU.

  • You’ll be able to find and download all of the video applications available on PS3 directly from this new XMB category.
  • A folder labeled “My Channels” within this category will allow you to easily access your downloaded applications.
  • Any videos downloaded from the PlayStation store will continue to be placed in the existing Video category on the XMB
Two updates for all of you enjoying Blu-ray 3D movies on PS3:

  • 3D support will now be available when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-Ray
  • DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) will be supported while playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
  • 3D digital photos in MPO format can now be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.
The 3.70 update will be available soon; additional details will be available after the firmware goes live here. Separately, there will also be a minor PSP system software update (v. 6.60) launching soon.

Auto synching trophies? Its about time

Im also glad they are doing something to reduce the clutter on the XMB. The thing has too many apps

Wow, I swear I was going to make a post in here a couple months ago about how they should put in a Recommendation feature from the PlayStation store that you can msg friends links to games they should try out. I could've won millions had I posted it. :(

So there's like an extra second of a delay or so when playing videos on your hard drive I'm noticing now after the update... or is just me?

a while back i got the red screen of death and since my ps3 has been completely unusable.

so i bought an external hard drive and installed it in place of the old PS3. i then went to the sony site, downloaded the newest software update to a memory stick and inserted it into the ps3 and let it run its course.

and now, i get the red screen yet again :argh:

if it's not the hard drive, what else could it be? or is there another solution I could try?

Version 3.72 came out today

Did anybody have to again Accept the Terms of Service??

Does anyone know if there's a way to turn off that pop-up message notifying you about the Auto-Upload feature for Saved Data when you start up games?

Not sure where else to ask this, but can the PS3 ignore region codes for Blu-rays?
