PlayStation Firmware Updates

It is region free for games, but not movies. Some movies are listed as "Region ABC" and should play in any BR player though. Here is a cool resource to use.

4.00 is coming....

A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.
Other changes to take effect with this update include:

  • PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
    • Game patches
    • System software
    • Recommended games and videos
    • Sync trophy information
  • New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages
You can find more details after the firmware goes live here. We look forward to your feedback

New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages
Interesting to see what this is about but its about damn time. It should be to filter through friends though bc that and messages is so cumbersome and it needs better organization and customization

How do you turn off that warning that pops up when you first turn on the PS3?

What are the best PSN games to download? And is Playstation Plus really worth getting?

Does anyone here know if reinstalling game data will automatically reinstall DLC purchased from the store? Or do you have to re-download that DLC from the store? I've got contradicting answers from forums and I was curious if anyone has ever tested it. If the answer was "No" don't you only get 5 downloads of a purchase from PSN Store?

If the DLC was deleted, you can download it again from the store. There is no limit to how many times you can do it. The 5 thing you are thinking of (I think) is the number of PS3's you can share that content with. Basically you share you master account info with up to 4 other people so they can play your content with you account/PSN ID. 5 is the maximum you can do this with.

Edit: Just remembered that they changed the policy from 5 to 2 PS3's now.

Hey Kal, thanks for the answer. I searched it up again after bringing into account the shared systems policy you mentioned. It makes sense now. I was under the impression (when I first heard it from a friend) that you can download things you purchase from the store 5 times and that's it. But that's actually 5 (or 2 now) PS3's with access to those download privileges which are unlimited(?). So that's nice to know. I've got plenty of space on my HDD but I'm doing some cleaning up. It looks like games from the store and DLC have the same unlimited amount of downloads so I don't have to worry about clearing up space.

I still wish the store was a bit more organized (Download List = Yeeesh) and I'd love a wish list to keep track of stuff I plan on buying in the future.

FW 4.1 is live.

Hi, everyone. We are releasing a new system software update (v4.10) for PlayStation 3 today that will include a few minor changes that we want to make you all aware of.
First off, once you download the new system software, you will be asked to accept a change to our Terms of Service. In an effort for more unity between PlayStation Network (PSN) and other Sony Entertainment Network services, your “PSN Account” will now be named “Sony Entertainment Network Account.” Please note that this change is one in name only and will not change the PSN that you know and love. You’ll still play games online, still have access to the latest downloadable games and add-ons, and still experience a wide variety of movies, sports and music across PSN.
With this system software update (v4.10), we’ll also be updating the PS3 Internet Browser with improved display speed.

They need to update the flash player.

I know it will probably never happen but since the PS Vita is going to have legit Party Chat I sure hope the PS3 gets it soon...

At this point, I think they are just going to add that to the next console. It's the number one asked for feature since day one and if it hasn't happened by now, it's not going to happen IMO.

Yeah, I know.. Looks like my friends and I will remain on XBL Party Chat when we play PS3 games.

Just very odd when you see the Vita has it.

Recently bought a new PS3 that came with a dual shock controller that I can't seem to get the rumble/vibration function to work. I switched the rumble/vibration function to on in the system settings menu but it still doesn't work. Will the rumble/vibration function not work if it is not made into the game itself or do I have to use the usb cable to get it to work? Would hate to have to update my system firmware & ruin/kill a new PS3 so soon.

How would updating it ruin your PS3? I would make sure the game supports the vibrating aspect of the controller. You could also try resetting the controller by clicking the small reset button that is found on the bottom of the controller. (You will need a paperclip or something small to click it.)

Finally got it working after downloading a Resistance 3 game demo off a blu-ray disc.
