Please, no "Superman Begins"

I wouldn't mind if they forgot all things Donner...it's not like he created Superman for christ sake...give us something new and modern to re-establish SUPERMAN in the 21st century...the creators of Smallville took some liberties with the mythos and most of it worked and was/is a very successful show...TAS also took some liberties/tweaked a thing here and there and it still worked as Superman...the movie makers likewise should and will take some liberties with the Superman mythos...and make a great movie with the comics as it's backbone...

Agreed. I like Returns and all I really care about is that the story's good. But it's frustrating to watch with all the wink wink nudge nudge to donner. That's the price you pay for being so aware of that movie's existence. Some little kid won't care, supes is supes.

Really? It worked? I disagree with that. I guess it works for very young audiences who are not familiar with the mythos, but for a lot of Superman/comics fans, it doesn't. I think Smallville is a sellout show for the most part actually. It is a very convoluted, incoherent, bland, it's not faithful to its own mythos, and it's highly revisionist in a bad way, IMO. I just can't get into it; there are too many silly and cheesy storylines. There are some good episodes and good moments here and there, but overall, it is a very mediocre Superman show to me, though it seems the storytelling is improving now. Good for them, I guess.

Yet, superman returns was faithful to its mythos and had a good storyline? Id rather watch Smallville over SR anyday.

I know I'm starting to get too involved though I promised myself I wouldn't, and more than likely the powers that be would rather I not because of my past, but as an outsider looking in, it seems to me all this supey war stuff continues to this day and I personally wish it'd stop. This is how it begins. Somebody bashes one person's movie or tv show. Then they become irate or whatever and decide to let that influence their criticism of that person's movie. But I'm not totally aware of how things are these days, so I'm not going to pretend to know.

I'll tell you what I do know to be true; most smallville fans never gave returns a chance. As a fan I watched the movie and felt an incredible sense of inner conflict over whether to be honest and true to myself or  at all the guys who bashed up on smallville to prop up Returns. I chose the latter and it's on one hand, not that big a deal to me, on the other I'm too attached to Lee, show, and a few other posters not to feel guilty at all for screwing things up. I honestly don't know whether to cut off and go or tell the truth now about what really went on years back. Will it matter at all, is the question...

My point was that they created a very successful show changing a lot of the Superman mythos...it is proof that it can be done...most people that are going to see this movie, do not read comics and/or didn't see the Donner films...in Batman Begins they showed us a lot of the origin stuff that was never in the comics and it still worked...in TDK they weren't a slave to the comics and it is the second highest grossing film of all time...I love the comics and the mythos of Superman as much as anyone, but the filmmakers have to pic and choose what works best from the comics and put it into a modern Superman film...AND they are going to have to leave stuff out...hopefully for the best...

I really dont think they need an origin movie that starts at krypton. I think filmaker can assume that krypton to Clark leaving the farm is common knowledge. Now the years after that and to his first appearence is un tapped. Finally if by origin ,you mean the first superman outting. I think that is really needed.

Well I am the opposite, SR was a lot more faithful to the mythos than Smallville has been, other than the first 2 seasons, Smallville has just strayed further and further from the mythos and it is now suffering for it with lower rating and desperate storylines.

As a Superman fan, I cant even watch the show anymore. SR at least had references to the comics and to the movies, not to mention we actually got to see him BE Superman in the movie.

Me too. I'd rather watch Smallville than SR. Actually that's what i'm doing most of the time. Smallville at least had great Superman moments and amazing episodes like Memoria, Rosetta and this last one with Doomsday.

An origin film is definitely the way to go.

It has lasted because it's on the WB/now CW

If they did the same thing on a big network I have my doubts that it would last but a few seasons. The height of FOTW era would have had the show cancelled on a major network such as NBC.

Smallville has just gone so far from the mythos i cant even consider it related to Superman anymore. Lois and Clark in Smallville will NEVER be together and in fact seem to grow further apart as the years go on its so ridiculous. It has THE ODD good Superman moment, but THATS it.

I agree, it is an average at best show and wouldnt have lasted this long on a major network.

Agree on the first part, completely disagree on the last. If anything, this show has definitely gravitated to the idea that they will be together. They've thrown blatant hints at the whole Lois/Clark relationship. And the past few episodes have clearly detailed that Lois has secret feelings towards Clark. Doesn't get any more obvious than that.

For some reason I watched SmallVille last week and I had to sigh when I saw Doomsday. I mean, as usual, the shows action scenes sucked but the apperence of a Supervillain from the source material had me longing for a movie that would finally give Superman a foe who could engage him in combat of the physical variety.

Are we ever going to get that?

BTW I still think that the chick who plays Lois is doing a good job of portraying the character as it should be.

At least Smallville is fun that i can ignore all the crap there was before. This season is really good, IMO. I can't even watch one sec of SR, except for the plane sequence.

With the impact the Donner movies have had on the Superman mythos, I highly doubt that they are going to do away with all things Donner.

At the very least, I think we're going to get the Donner Fortress of Solitude since that has pretty much become the de facto Fortress in all modern incarnations of Superman in the comics, video games (Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, very likely DC Universe Online since it is based on the current DC Comics, and I would be surprised not to see it in Factor 5's Superman game), film (Superman Returns), and television (Smallville).

I guess I should give up the hope that I'll get to see a live-action Fortress that's not made of crystals in my lifetime. Effin' wonderful.

I'd be very surprised to not see Donner's sunstone Fortress to not be in the next Superman movie and Factor 5's Superman game.

I think the Donner FOS is majestic, mystical, and beautiful. It's the ideal bridge between earth and Kal-El's Kryptonian heritage.

Erica Durance. And I agree. She might not look like a traditional Lois Lane, but she has the correct attitude and personality.

Maybe the fortress could look like it's made of crystals or maybe the same kind of structure but it should at least have something more than that, like alien robots and all.

John's Fortress which is the one in the comics, is pretty much what you describe, it's exactly like Donner's Fortress in design and sunstone material however it has the alien zoo, an armory, the tribute to Jor-El and Lara, a trophy room, a furnace to power the Fortress, the Phantom Zone Projector, a laboratory, and Superman Robots
