Prince of Persia:The Sands of Time

I didn't know Persians have British accents? :p
Alfred Molina
Ben Kingsley
Gemma Aterton

Jake Gyllenhaal is sorta doing an accent to match.

I know the director Mike Newell is British, but come on!

as someone else mentioned in an earlier post, for historical fiction (and I use that term loosely); its a common practice to use british-based accents, since its enough of a difference to an american accent to give the characters a stronger sense of a foreign nationality, but its close enough to what we're used to in order for the accents not to be jarring or hard to understand. Its dumb, but i see their point.

THE WHITE KNIGHT, WHITE SAVIOR, WHITE HERO. It’s not uncommon too see white actors playing ethnic roles from all walks of life. This degrading practice has been going on since the beginning of the motion picture industry. When there’s a perfect opportunity to diversity Hollywood films, execs feel more comfortable with the color white. Sadly white washing still lingers on in the 21st century.

If I was a 10yr old Persian kid watching the upcoming POP and found out later on in life that my childhood Persian hero was played by a white actor, I would be devastated. People who aren’t minorities in America or never grew up with a diverse group of people fail to understand how minorities are being underrepresented in the media.

it does suck, the problem is that its so tough for minorities to get a foot in the door...as a black man, it was tough enough for me to get an internship at a RADIO station....much less trying to be an actor or a personality....

I have a cousin who is a grip for NBC and he is one of maybe 3 minorities in his crew...and he's just a grip

isn't it almost Shakespearean to have them speak with a British accent? Back in the day when there was a play that took place in Rome or Greece, the actors kept their British accents and I just think it became an unwritten tradition that subconsciously still happens film today. Look at Gladiator.

need we say this again does Jake have a British accent? yes

but so did the prince in the video game

I'm persian doesn't bother me that much just surprised that Gyllenhaal was cast as the prince but after seeing the trailer and how he interacted with the princess I can't wait! :)

The cast is already in place so I'm pretty much done b**ching about it in internet land. I'm not saying that it's wrong for for people to b**ch about Hollywood whitewash casting I'm just saying that I'm done. Okay, I might mention is joking every now and again...

The movie looks like fun, Jake looks hot and good in the role and so does Gemma. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I've never played the game, but the trailer was :awesome:

I'm glad they are basing it on TSOT. Starting with the second game the series lost it's magic and went for that bland, dark and violent cliche that I'm more than sick of.

I loved the feeling, the story and Prince voiceover in the first game.

I am going to end this white/brown discussion here and now.

1. He isn't necessarily Persian as he was adopted off the streets. His origin isn't too well explained.
2. His name is Dastan correct? In Shahnameh, Dastan's nickname was Zal meaning Albino because he was so white. Also, there is a character that the Prince meets in the DS version of the 2008 PoP game with the name Zal.

lol

hopefully we'll get to see some nice fight scenes and some cool moves by him

Believe me, them picking Jake will draw in the chicks. It looks like we are going to get those cool moves, judging by the trailer.

hope so, yea from the trailer we got some quick shots of him in action, can't wait to see it

Interesting that they've released a full length trailer early on. Maybe they feel they owe us. Nonetheless it's awesome.

I hope they didn't spoil too much of the sand time effect in the trailer. I want to see it and be in awe of it.

dude this is Bruckheimer. he knows how to make money. the more promotion the more money they will make.
this is not like Cameron who still thinks that they are promoting movies like in the 90's.:awesome:

It's not so much about race for me as it is about an actor looking the part, and going by that I do suppose that Gyllenhaal looks enough like the prince. Still, would have been nice to have a Persian actor be cast, but I understand that this topic has been run into the ground so I'll leave it at that.

But who, though?

By the way, does the name Yuri Lowenthal ring a bell to people?

Historical accuracy isn't as important as fidelity to the game, really.

Me too. I think the family-friendly tone is something that Sands of Time nailed on perfectly.

I'm just happy they didn't go the route that the NEW Prince of Persia is on.

Jake got in some good shape for the role....doesn't look as cut as he was in Jarhead though

So basically its OK for Dastan to be white since in the video games he's a white caucasian that was abandoned or something maybe during the crusades.
