The birth of our Solar System. We watch as far off in the primordial past, the Sun, the planets, and finally, the EARTH are created by seemingly all-powerful, godlike alien entities the ENGINEERS. The raw primal power of the cosmos is harnessed by these fantastic extra-terrestrials, who have the ability to create and manipulate both mechanical and biological matter at will. The montage ends as the earliest genetic recipe for life is sent forth into our worlds atmosphere from a massive Engineer vessel, so big it blocks out the stars.
AFRICA The Cradle of Life: 2085. ELIZABETH SHAW is a respected archaeologist working at a research institute specializing in reconstruction of ancient civilizations and early human remains. Shes on the forefront of her field, with radical theories, most notably that there must be an actual historical basis for the existence of GOD, that every society has been united in their adherence to a creation myth and the secret of Mans true beginnings lies buried waiting to be uncovered. Yet, in many ways shes naïve, a dreamer; haunted by the loss of her parents at an early age, British missionaries who infused in her a deep spirituality, she finds it hard to connect with her colleagues. Shes approached out of the blue by MEREDITH VICKERS, a cold, calculating executive representing the omnipresent WEYLAND CORPORATION. Vickers offers the chance of a lifetime: an archaeological dig which could grant her the chance to prove her theories and possibly even uncover a piece of God. Shaw jumps at the opportunity, and asks where on the continent the project is located, but Vickers informs her that the excavation isnt in Africa or Earth, for that matter
MARS Outside the Delta-M Colony. Shaw and Vickers arrive at the excavation and are greeted by RAYDEN HOLLOWAY, the gruff, untrusting CORPORATE MERCENARY heading up the expeditions SECURITY TEAM, who clashes with Shaw right off the bat when he blocks her way and insists she sign an NDA before being allowed on the site. As Shaw enters the excavation, she finds herself in an enormous, prehistoric CITADEL, constructed by the ancient ENGINEERS. Amidst the ancient remains are found highly advanced, biomechanical relics with are determined to be of extra-terrestrial origin. This has caught the attention of the mega-conglomerate Weyland Corporation, who finances the excavation of the citadel in the hopes of reverse-engineering the alien biotech for financial gain. Also uncovered is evidence suggesting that the Engineers had a database of all life on Earth, and may even have been responsible for its creation including Man. Shaw excitedly joins the project, and in a montage studies the find alongside other scientists including DR. NAKATOMO and DR. GALMER. Shaw uncovers the secret of the citadel when she manages to activate an incredible HOLOGRAM: a collection of STAR CHARTS, which seemingly lead the way to the home planet of the Engineers.
Vickers reports this incredible turns of events via comm-screen to ROBERT WEYLAND in his office towering over a partially-submerged MANHATTAN back on Earth. Weyland, a charismatic, intelligent, yet ruthless businessman, is convinced by Vickers to plan a space mission following the discovered star charts in an effort to find and make first contact with the Engineers. For the darkly-brooding CEO, its merely a way of obtaining new technology so that Weyland Corp. may retain the lead in the competitive race to establish colonies off-world but we get the sense that Vickers is driven by something deeper.
PLUTO Weyland Corporation Shipyards. At the edge of the solar system, Shaw, Vickers, and Holloway prepare the expedition, while the companys newest, highly-advanced, top-of-the-line ISRV (Interstellar Research Vessel) PROMETHEUS, originally intended for use in terraforming operations, is being retrofitted for the voyage. Vickers assembles her crew, headed up by CAPTAIN JANEK and his FIRST OFFICER RAVEL. Shaw and Holloways ideologies continue to clash; shes an optimist and even a romantic, while he has a stark, Darwinian view of the cold, uncaring universe. As the Prometheus expedition prepares to depart for the far reaches of the universe, back on Earth Weyland announces the mission to an exhilarated audience and footage of the ship departing the Plutonian shipyard is broadcast around the Earth.
The depths of SPACE: 2090. The Prometheus decelerates as it reaches its target solar system. The vessels crew emerges from their cryo-chambers. Along with Elizabeth Shaw, Meredith Vickers, Rayden Holloway, Captain Janek and Executive Officer Ravel, the crew of the Prometheus is comprised of: Operations Android DAVID 4, Navigator CHANCE, Chief Mechanic FIFIELD, and Theological Advisor FATHER GRATIS; a team of research scientists including MILLBURN, ALTA, TAIDEN, ODETTE, WEBB, and MUSTAFA (and several others); a team of Mechanics and Technical Officers including SIENA, BOYLE, and DENBROOK (and several others); and a security unit comprised of Holloways mercenaries including VLADIMIR, TAPLOW, OROURKE, KATAKE and SERVELL. The crew gets acclimated to their removal from cryo-sleep, their muscles in atrophy from five years without use. Holloway takes pity and assists Shaw in her physical therapy exercises, while shes determined to draw him out of his shell.
The crew prepares for arrival at the home planet of the Engineers. Shaw and Holloway learn that they arent as different as they might appear; he too suffered a traumatic childhood, growing up on a colony world under a brutal dictatorship, subsequently joining the Outer Rim Defense Fleet to escape but being drummed out when he took the fall for a corrupt superior officer. The pair is slowly drawn to each other, initiating a romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Shaw is haunted by visions of her parents: her father, PRIEST EZEKIAL SHAW and her mother, RACHEL SHAW, and her childhood in Africa where her parents instilled in her a deep belief in God and a greater mystery to the universe, before they were killed in a local uprising. David finds himself alienated from the crew, treated as a second-class citizen do to his being a SYNTHETIC apparently, there have been armed revolts by robots against their human creators in the far-off colonies, which causes many onboard to distrust David. Meanwhile, Vickers hovers over the expedition taking inventory of her crew and occasionally clashing with Captain Janeks command.
The Prometheus enters the Zeta 2 Reticuli star system, and achieves orbit around the mysterious planet which was established as the home of the gods in Shaws star charts; strange readings emanate from the world below, and in their bunks several crew members are troubled by bizarre dreams. The vessels landing module, the MAGELLAN, detaches from the Prometheus command module and sets down on the surface of the barren, alien world, while the larger portion of the craft remains in orbit. Ravel and Shaw lead the first survey team into a cavernous, artificial structure which was discovered during landing, which is revealed to be an ENGINEER TEMPLE, similar to the ruins discovered on Mars and laced with identical biotechnology, although significantly newer.
Inside the Temple, the crew discover the AMPULE ROOM, filled with thousands of the cylindrical black objects, looked down upon by a large humanoid head, (which they will come to call THE FACE OF GOD), whose eyes are shrouded in shadow. David in particular seems enraptured with the idol, while others who look upon it seem to hear indistinct whispering in their heads. Shaw zeroes in on one AMPULE on a pedestal which has been separated from the rest; Millburn attempts to remove the singular ampule of out curiosity, being injured by an automated defense system, before Shaw and David manage to disarm the device. The crew takes several ampules, including the one which had been quarantined, and return to the Magellan. Vickers inspects the teams specimens with awe.
David examines the contents of the ampules and concludes that they constitute a type of intergalactic Noahs Ark, containing the genetic recipe for myriad species throughout the cosmos. Each of the ampules contains the genome for the different species, while the giant face represents their Creator looking down upon his children. Meanwhile, the crew continues to experience strange dreams and hallucinations, with David making unauthorized pilgrimages to the Ampule Room to commune with the Face of God. Millburn suffers a hysterical break, repeatedly screaming that the Old Ones are coming, and has to be confined to the Magellans sickbay, while other members of the crew experience similar visions of the Return of the Old Gods.
The crews visions turn to actuality when an ENGINEER VESSEL arrives in orbit around the planet and opens fire on the command module of the Prometheus; the Humans craft is severely damaged, its nuclear engine core going critical, but Janek orders the crew to evacuate via an emergency tether connecting the orbital module to the ground module (think the theoretical space elevator), then aims the Prometheus right at the Engineers ship. The Prometheus explodes, killing Janek, and sending the Engineer ship barreling down through the atmosphere, raining down debris on Shaw, Holloway, Vickers, and the other survey team members, before impacting on the surface the Magellan is heavily damaged by falling debris as well. On the way back to the Magellan, Shaw is caught up in a wave of energy rippling from the crashed Engineer vessel; she returns to her ship, but finds that its been destroyed and everyone aboard is dead. The ruins of the Magellan are hit by another energy wave, and the vessel is restored before her eyes, crew and all. Shaw realizes that whatever is aboard the alien ship must be the gods who built this world gods who can control time as well as create life. Shaw has been to the future, and has seen that everyone in the expedition is doomed to death.
Several of the crew panic and insist they return the stolen ampules to the Temple as an apology for their transgression on the gods homeworld, but Vickers vetoes this decision. To the surprise and awe of the remaining crew, a lumbering, elephantine CREATURE appears outside the Magellan and makes his way inside; Holloways security force is on the verge of attacking the beast, when the Space Jockey opens up to reveal itself as biomechanical suit, and the HUMANOID ENGINEER emerges from within.
The Engineer doesnt speak the Humans tongue, but by reshaping its arm into a conductor which it inserts down Davids throat, it injects a database directly into the androids positronic brain, allowing David to act as interrupter. We learn that the other Engineers are planning to kill the humans; while the godlike race are the seeders of life, to inferior species who get out of line they can be bringers of death. Furthermore, the others are planning to return to Earth and stamp out of the Human infestation before they can infringe any more on the territory of the gods. However, this is the Engineer who created the genome for Man, building them in his own image, and he feels protective of his children. Shaw in particular is beside herself to come face to face with God.
The Engineer tells the crew that he risks death himself by helping his creations, as although he is several billion years old, he is rather young according to his races standards, and lacks the authority to go against his elders; however, the Engineer gives to the crew a large, silver AMPLUE, which he tells them contains the elixir of life David examines the new ampules contents and confirms that it holds a substance which can repair cellular damage at any level, and even start a reaction leading to new cell growth. It is the key to creating and maintaining life the young Engineer hopes this will help the humans survive the coming onslaught. The Engineer returns to his own craft, where an ELDER has realized his betrayal the Elder injects the younger with an unknown substance which sends the human-helping alien into paralysis, then dumps the unfortunate Creator of Man in the Ampule Room.
Despite Vickers vetoing the crews earlier decision to return their originally-stolen ampules in an effort to appease the gods, Fifield and Boyle sneak out with the stolen ampules. They return to the Temple, but upon arrival, a SERPENTINE creature erupts from the Engineers body which leaps down Boyles throat, rendering him inert. Fifield discovers the fallen Boyle, and calls for assistance from the Magellan, but the serpent promptly explodes from Boyles fallen form and infiltrates Fifield as well. Ravel and Shaw lead a rescue party who find both men unconscious and bring them back to the landed module, along with the stricken form of the Engineer.
Back on the Magellan, the science crew examines Fifield and Boyle and finds that something appears to be growing in their abdomens. As they crew hole up in the Magellan and attempt to effect repairs long enough the achieve orbit, several more serpents erupt from the Engineers body and invade another nine members of the crew (technicians and science officers). The prone forms in sick bay begin mounting up, their faces becoming distorted, their eyes blackened, their bellies distending; finally, as the Engineer awakens, he apologizes to the human crew for unleashing this upon them, telling them that he is being forced to reproduce and his biological children are now going to kill those he created. The Engineer dies as a final serpent explodes from his face, and flies down Shaws throat.
Onboard the Engineer craft, we see that they are monitoring the progress of the infected humans from afar. The Elder Engineers activate the biological infections growing in the humans abdomens. Onboard the Magellan, the eleven infected humans bellies burst tentacles erupt from within and with a snapping of bone and rending of sinew, pull the humans skin and bodies apart to reveal gigantic, hulking PROTOFORMS, infant forms of the Engineers genetically engineered to act as a warrior caste. The monsters run amok, attacking the surviving human crew both on the ship and across the terrain of the planet. Ravel, Chance, Millburn, Alta, Gratis, and the remaining crew are slaughtered by the monstrosities. Meanwhile, Shaw, the last infected crewmember, is in incredible pain as her belly is about to burst, as shes tended to by a remorseful Holloway, David and Vickers barricaded in the supply chamber, Shaw erupts, and a new, biomechanical NIGHTMARE emerges; part humanoid, part android, it is the STAR BEAST the first ancestor of the ALIEN!
The shredded form of Shaw is discarded as the Star Beast rampages through the Magellan, and David and Holloway are stunned to discover that Shaw had been a robot the entire time! However, David uses the elixir given to him by the Engineer to repair the damage done to Shaw, and as shes mostly biological tissue, she is brought back to life. Vickers reveals that she herself designed Shaw, the first in a new line of replicants, biological androids, and all of Shaws memories are implanted; in fact, Shaw was actually built on Mars and has never been to Earth at all. Vickers had hoped that the advanced Elizabeth Shaw-android would help her uncover the ultimate secret to creating life and got that wish, at the expense of the Prometheus expedition.
The Star Beast, hostile to all life, attacks and kills the smaller Protoforms, then comes after the Humans. The way comparatively clear, David informs the others that as the Engineer downloaded a database into his memory, he thinks if they can get to the Engineer craft, he can program one of their shuttles to carry the survivors back to Earth. In a desperate, last race through this nightmare world, Shaw, David, Vickers and Holloway take off in an exploration ground vehicle toward the Engineer craft. The Star Beast attacks them as more time waves rip forth, destroying the vehicle. Holloway sacrifices himself, distracting the Star Beast before being horribly wounded and sucked into a time wave, while David is damaged as well. Shaw and Vickers make for the Engineer craft on foot, carrying the damaged David.
They reach the alien vessel, and make their way inside toward the hanger bay, while the Engineers are alerted to their presence and activate a series of biomechanical defenses which the crew must navigate. The Elder Engineer traps them, and flings a serpent down Vickers throat, but flees when the out-of-control Star Beast attacks. Shaw and David reach the hanger bay, and he programs a small craft with Earths coordinates, planting an explosive outside the bay door for defense. However, as a final time wave spreads throughout the damaged ship, David realizes that Shaw is the future of his kind, telling her that she has to survive as they have it in them to be better than either of these species of reckless creators, the humans and the gods telling her, were the best of humanity he sacrifices himself and actives the explosive, sending the Star Beast flying through the time wave and tearing into the Engineer vessel as Shaws shuttle blasts off, allowing her to make orbit and escape.
Meanwhile, we see that several of the Engineers have survived the massive explosion aboard their vessel. As time waves ripple through the Engineer ship, Vickers sheds her human skin, becoming a Protoform then sheds THAT form, and becomes an adult Engineer. Shes no longer inferior, and is accepted by the other Engineers shes finally achieved godhood, the ultimate secret of life. The Engineers succeed in repairing their ship and leave the planet behind, for time and space unknown

The Prometheus explodes, killing Janek, and sending the Engineer ship barreling down through the atmosphere, raining down debris on Shaw, Holloway, Vickers, and the other survey team members, before impacting on the surface the Magellan is heavily damaged by falling debris as well. On the way back to the Magellan, Shaw is caught up in a wave of energy rippling from the crashed Engineer vessel; she returns to her ship, but finds that its been destroyed and everyone aboard is dead. The ruins of the Magellan are hit by another energy wave, and the vessel is restored before her eyes, crew and all. Shaw realizes that whatever is aboard the alien ship must be the gods who built this world gods who can control time as well as create life. Shaw has been to the future, and has seen that everyone in the expedition is doomed to death.
Several of the crew panic and insist they return the stolen ampules to the Temple as an apology for their transgression on the gods homeworld, but Vickers vetoes this decision. To the surprise and awe of the remaining crew, a lumbering, elephantine CREATURE appears outside the Magellan and makes his way inside; Holloways security force is on the verge of attacking the beast, when the Space Jockey opens up to reveal itself as biomechanical suit, and the HUMANOID ENGINEER emerges from within.
The Engineer doesnt speak the Humans tongue, but by reshaping its arm into a conductor which it inserts down Davids throat, it injects a database directly into the androids positronic brain, allowing David to act as interrupter. We learn that the other Engineers are planning to kill the humans; while the godlike race are the seeders of life, to inferior species who get out of line they can be bringers of death. Furthermore, the others are planning to return to Earth and stamp out of the Human infestation before they can infringe any more on the territory of the gods. However, this is the Engineer who created the genome for Man, building them in his own image, and he feels protective of his children. Shaw in particular is beside herself to come face to face with God.
The Engineer tells the crew that he risks death himself by helping his creations, as although he is several billion years old, he is rather young according to his races standards, and lacks the authority to go against his elders; however, the Engineer gives to the crew a large, silver AMPLUE, which he tells them contains the elixir of life David examines the new ampules contents and confirms that it holds a substance which can repair cellular damage at any level, and even start a reaction leading to new cell growth. It is the key to creating and maintaining life the young Engineer hopes this will help the humans survive the coming onslaught. The Engineer returns to his own craft, where an ELDER has realized his betrayal the Elder injects the younger with an unknown substance which sends the human-helping alien into paralysis, then dumps the unfortunate Creator of Man in the Ampule Room.
Despite Vickers vetoing the crews earlier decision to return their originally-stolen ampules in an effort to appease the gods, Fifield and Boyle sneak out with the stolen ampules. They return to the Temple, but upon arrival, a SERPENTINE creature erupts from the Engineers body which leaps down Boyles throat, rendering him inert. Fifield discovers the fallen Boyle, and calls for assistance from the Magellan, but the serpent promptly explodes from Boyles fallen form and infiltrates Fifield as well. Ravel and Shaw lead a rescue party who find both men unconscious and bring them back to the landed module, along with the stricken form of the Engineer.
Back on the Magellan, the science crew examines Fifield and Boyle and finds that something appears to be growing in their abdomens. As they crew hole up in the Magellan and attempt to effect repairs long enough the achieve orbit, several more serpents erupt from the Engineers body and invade another nine members of the crew (technicians and science officers). The prone forms in sick bay begin mounting up, their faces becoming distorted, their eyes blackened, their bellies distending; finally, as the Engineer awakens, he apologizes to the human crew for unleashing this upon them, telling them that he is being forced to reproduce and his biological children are now going to kill those he created. The Engineer dies as a final serpent explodes from his face, and flies down Shaws throat.
Onboard the Engineer craft, we see that they are monitoring the progress of the infected humans from afar. The Elder Engineers activate the biological infections growing in the humans abdomens. Onboard the Magellan, the eleven infected humans bellies burst tentacles erupt from within and with a snapping of bone and rending of sinew, pull the humans skin and bodies apart to reveal gigantic, hulking PROTOFORMS, infant forms of the Engineers genetically engineered to act as a warrior caste. The monsters run amok, attacking the surviving human crew both on the ship and across the terrain of the planet. Ravel, Chance, Millburn, Alta, Gratis, and the remaining crew are slaughtered by the monstrosities. Meanwhile, Shaw, the last infected crewmember, is in incredible pain as her belly is about to burst, as shes tended to by a remorseful Holloway, David and Vickers barricaded in the supply chamber, Shaw erupts, and a new, biomechanical NIGHTMARE emerges; part humanoid, part android, it is the STAR BEAST the first ancestor of the ALIEN!
The shredded form of Shaw is discarded as the Star Beast rampages through the Magellan, and David and Holloway are stunned to discover that Shaw had been a robot the entire time! However, David uses the elixir given to him by the Engineer to repair the damage done to Shaw, and as shes mostly biological tissue, she is brought back to life. Vickers reveals that she herself designed Shaw, the first in a new line of replicants, biological androids, and all of Shaws memories are implanted; in fact, Shaw was actually built on Mars and has never been to Earth at all. Vickers had hoped that the advanced Elizabeth Shaw-android would help her uncover the ultimate secret to creating life and got that wish, at the expense of the Prometheus expedition.
The Star Beast, hostile to all life, attacks and kills the smaller Protoforms, then comes after the Humans. The way comparatively clear, David informs the others that as the Engineer downloaded a database into his memory, he thinks if they can get to the Engineer craft, he can program one of their shuttles to carry the survivors back to Earth. In a desperate, last race through this nightmare world, Shaw, David, Vickers and Holloway take off in an exploration ground vehicle toward the Engineer craft. The Star Beast attacks them as more time waves rip forth, destroying the vehicle. Holloway sacrifices himself, distracting the Star Beast before being horribly wounded and sucked into a time wave, while David is damaged as well. Shaw and Vickers make for the Engineer craft on foot, carrying the damaged David.
They reach the alien vessel, and make their way inside toward the hanger bay, while the Engineers are alerted to their presence and activate a series of biomechanical defenses which the crew must navigate. The Elder Engineer traps them, and flings a serpent down Vickers throat, but flees when the out-of-control Star Beast attacks. Shaw and David reach the hanger bay, and he programs a small craft with Earths coordinates, planting an explosive outside the bay door for defense. However, as a final time wave spreads throughout the damaged ship, David realizes that Shaw is the future of his kind, telling her that she has to survive as they have it in them to be better than either of these species of reckless creators, the humans and the gods telling her, were the best of humanity he sacrifices himself and actives the explosive, sending the Star Beast flying through the time wave and tearing into the Engineer vessel as Shaws shuttle blasts off, allowing her to make orbit and escape.
Meanwhile, we see that several of the Engineers have survived the massive explosion aboard their vessel. As time waves ripple through the Engineer ship, Vickers sheds her human skin, becoming a Protoform then sheds THAT form, and becomes an adult Engineer. Shes no longer inferior, and is accepted by the other Engineers shes finally achieved godhood, the ultimate secret of life. The Engineers succeed in repairing their ship and leave the planet behind, for time and space unknown
