Alien was trying enough at 2 hours so thank god it got cut down. As for The Thing, I doubt that movie was a masterpiece before the cuts.
 
The best way to signify the difference in Ridleys and Cameron's aliens is that Ridley's was a singular minded creature. Camerons creatures were hive mind creatures. The queen dictated their actions and without her they wouldn't survive. Ridleys was like an intelligent animal. Cameron's were like bee's. Both work and aare effective, but a rogue singular creature is more creepy and effective IMO. It reminds me of a rogue lion or shark but with the intelligence of a human.
 
Bah, I adore both movies equally. Two different types of movies that happen to share the same universe. Both movies deserve my adoration.

I am going to admit that I have not seen the original alien film in its entirety. I've been contemplating picking it up on bluray, but seem to recall there being several versions on dvd. Should I look for anything in particular?
 
I'd watch the original cut which is also Ridley Scotts favorite and to quote him:

"For all intents and purposes, I felt that the original cut of Alien was perfect. I still feel that way"

Not to say the Directors Cut is bad but the changes are barely noticeable. I'd watch the first cut and then the directors cut some other time if you enjoyed the theatrical version.
 
I'd recommend ordering the Alien Anthology set from amazon.co.uk. It's where I got my set, and they're currently selling it for £13.97, which is about $21.64. For a six disc blu-ray set, that's a steal. It only took my set a week to get here from our pals across the pond. And it does play fine on American blu-ray players, being region free and all.
 
I'll have to look into that. Thanks guys! I also seem to recall reading an article concerning the quality of the different blurry versions, how one was vastly superior to the other. This sound familiar to anyone?

There is no superior bluray of any of the films as they are all identical just the packaging is different. You are safe no matter which version you buy or where you buy it from.

Another way to look at it: Ridley's xenomorph was alone. It *began* as part of a hive in the egg chamber, but we're talking about just *one* facehugger whose egg infiltrated the Nostromo.

Maybe when a xenomorph is alone and cut off from the hive-mind, it becomes by necessity more of a stealthy predator (pun intended) than the overrun-them-with-superior-numbers swarm of later Alien flicks.
 
To be fair, the Xeno's in Aliens did display some kind of intelligence. Testing out the sentry guns, cutting the power and finding a way into the complex. Man that scene was great, when Hicks goes up and looks above the ceiling panels...

Have you seen the Blurays? They look like modern movies and it's surreal seeing the quality like that.

Also check out Apoc Now and Sleeping Beauty on Blu-Ray; they look amazing.
 
you know that someone was going to ask this. my questions are very simple.

did the writters writte Alien with sexual undertones in mind and based on the story called HR Giger. OR did they just writte an alien horror movie and after HR Giger started working on the movie his love for sexual undertones was included in the movie designes. because all the designes with sexual undertones is something that HG Giger likes himself.

my memory from Alien is all from when i was a young kid. and then i didnt understand the sxual undertones. did anyone watch the first movie as an adult and notice all the undertones and did you notice the penis on the Alien?
 
It's Transformers music. Shockwaves Revenge. That might be under it, but i'm 98% postive it's Shockwave's Revenge.

The Alien had sexual refrences since the facehugger was concived in the first draft by Dan O'Bannon.

Then afterwards the script was re-wrote by David Giler, and Walter Hill. And then after many re-writes they finished it.

Afterwards they got Giger. And probably Scott added the sexual things afterthat.

I don't have the shooting script, so I have no idea.

And yes, as an adult, even early adolesent, I started to notice the vagina doors on the Derlict, and the Alien's head and slime.

Also the rape.

You both misread my post, I guess. I was saying that the blu-rays for the Alien films look identical no matter if you buy the UK set, US set, German set, etc. because they are all the same and region free. Spider-Who asked if one blu-ray set was better than another set.

I've been a supporter of Blu-ray since 05, and you both are right when you say that the Alien films and Apocalypse Now look stunning.

. It's science fiction on a scale that we haven't seen since 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Of course, that's my humble opinion, and I'm trying not to be hyperbolic, but PROMETHEUS is a really big movie, full of big ideas. And, if this reads right, big scares as well.

The comments below seem to be suggesting it's fake.

It conflicts with something I read earlier about the engineers initially being good but turn on the humans after one of them steals something they shouldn't had.
 
the intriguing possibility is that the protoforms(protoforms are actually genetically morphed humans) are mated with bio brain to give birth to xenomorph eggs... and andriod david is basis for all mankind is a cool idea.... but making the engineers as evil seems fake
