Prometheus - Part 9

Whatever... I keep telling you that a good film is more than a good story, and you keep replying that story matters. I keep telling you that people don't understand the grammar of films anymore, and you keep replying that it's a glorious time to be a film fan... This is going nowhere.

Thank you Roger Sterling. :awesome:

Yeah, once someone says "whatever" and then avoids answering almost all of your points, I think you consider your argument is pretty solid. :hehe:

Even if I agreed with your argument about people's "understanding" of the "grammar" of films, it is clearly wrong. You know it. A lot here know it. I like to think I know it. Clearly it isn't a lost art.

And you think I find "the good old times" better when 9 out of my 10 favourite films ever were made after 1980. Obviously we are not meant to understand each other, and that is all. Other members will read and judge for themselves.

You are the one acting like the "good old times" were better. You are doing so. Are you saying you haven't been saying that? Really?

I still think that if even someone who didn't like Prometheus can come here and write lengthy posts about its flaws - which it definitely has - then it's done its job : it made people feel something strongly enough to have them argue about it for weeks.

Completely different argument, having absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the film in question.

Story drives a film...but it doesn't have to be an original story or even a deep story to be entertaining.

Here's a question for Darthskywalker... I saw you mentioned that you do "like" the film, you just thought it under-performed, or was disappointing. You have explained your position well, I find myself agreeing with you on many of these issues. But, I do wonder, since I know what you don't "like". What do you "like" about Prometheus.

To Regwec: I also find this one of the more "interesting" movies. But this is primarily do to the subject matter and not the movie itself, the movie added nothing (so far) and that's why I say I wish it was a "better" movie.

Finally saw this. I was anticipating this for a while and all in all it was okay.

I felt that the story was interesting, the design was really cool, and the SFX were really nice.

However, I felt the characters were a little meh/boring. I wasn't interested in any of the characters other than David. The guy who played the geologist was funny and I wish we got more of him. Idris Elba was cool too
The actors themselves, I felt were kinda...i dont know the right word but for the talent they had attached I wasnt really impressed by any of the performances other than Michael Fassbender. I actually was disappointed with Theron's performance. I felt that Scott just said: "Look pissed all the time"
And I felt, i guess because of budget, the crew just going back and forth between the ship and the one other location was boring

It was a fine movie, but I dont think that I'd go out of my way to see it again (I will get it on DVD eventually) and I dont think I'd really recommend it to many people.

7/10

isn't the adage 'simple story, complex characters'?

Look at Star Wars, the story is as simple, as black and white as it gets but the CHARACTERS elevates the movie. How about the original Alien, again, the story itself is a simple one but the CHARACTERS make the movie memorable.

Cinefex must have been a dream for the writers this issue. Of late Cinefex has been like, 'the effect was achieved with sub surface scatter and ambient occlusion...' zzzzzzz
Where as Prometheus is built up with real sets, and practical effects.

Like you I enjoy the subject matter. The opening was really promising. I found the Engineers design quite neat. I liked the Vickers/Weyland moment. I really liked the "meeting". I liked the Vickers "taking a stand against this group of idiots" moment.

But what really made me like this film was David. Every David scene, with the exception of the overlong security tapes scene, had me. His words to Weyland were an actual emotional moment in the film.

Lol, true, Millhouse did seem to be playing with that snake to impress Bart

Prometheus has made 231 million WW so far. The film should at least make 255 million by the next two weeks, and get immensely close to 300 million once released on Blu-Ray and DVD -- guaranteeing profit for 20th Century Fox.

So with that said and Ridley Scott tackling and juggling 2-3 other projects currently, when do we assume Scott will be working on Paradise?

The film cost 130 million to make. Add advertising cost (This film got quite the push so it wasn't cheapd). Most films that get sequels, need to make at least about 3 times their budgets.

This movie probably needs to clear 320 million before we start talking profit from the home media sales, not to mention that it was received in a rather lukewarm matter. I doubt this turns in the Batman Begins style DVD numbers.

I hope it does well enough for a sequel to be approved. I'd much rather see Paradise than a Blade Runner continuation.

Lukewarm? Load. Prometheus received generally positive and favorable reviews.

Snow White and The Huntsman received a lower rating and has only made 253 million at the Box Office on a 170 million budget, and a sequel has already been announced.

So yeah, load.

A Prometheus sequel is likely going to happen.

The drop off from Friday to Sunday in the first weekend and the major drop off for the second weekend indicates bad WOM and a lukewarm reception from audiences. It isn't like it did Harry Potter numbers and then dropped off because everyone already saw it. It went from 50 to 20 million in one weekend. That isn't good.

Snow White and The Huntsman has a "planned" sequel, much in the same way Tron Legacy and The Golden Compass have/had planned sequels coming. See how that has worked out so far?

Not saying this won't get it sequel. I think it will, but we aren't talking profit here.

from what Ive seen/heard this is getting bad WOM. I havent met anyone, nerd or GA, in my groups of friends who liked this that much

Exactly, and the numbers bare this out. The drop off is a clear sign of bad WOM. DoomsdayApex will ignore this though.

i am able to like a movie that is underperforming at the BO. i am also able to like a movie that has bad WOM. with Tron Legacy,John Carter and Prometehus its a little different. those are geek movies with a lot geek fans.

Prometheus is not bombing and its not hated. but it is underperforming and it doesnt have positive WOM.

It's a Rated-R flick. Of course the drop will appear horrendous. It's June after all. Yet, it's not from bad WOM or a lukewarm reaction. Had that been the case then Prometheus would have underpreformed. It didn't.

And yet, the sequel is still happening.

With it's budget at 130 million, and still projected to hit 300 million before the year is out, I think it's safe to say that 20th Century Fox has indeed made a profit off of Prometheus.

It's not a huge profit, but it's not underwhelming nor disappointing.
