Uh, Mann didn't shoot on HD for Public Enemies, he shot on regular 35mm film using cinematographer Dante Spinotti. There was a press release about Mann's crew for this film before shooting started, and that was a specific detail in that.
I think the overexposure in some of the scenes (too much light) is throwing some people off. Collateral and Miami Vice looked like big-budget versions of CSI -- the look screamed "television."
Depp and Mann's direction look amazing, but the music was horrible in the trailer.
Also....it pains me to say this....but I'm tired of Christian Bale.
Do you have a link to this press release? I'd love to read it, and I have to say it sure doesn't appear to be 35mm to me...
Indy's pants were cgi?
I agree,
there is no way that that those shots in the trailer have been shot on 35mm.
It is quite clearly the same HD used on Miami Vice and Collateral.
I know that on Collateral, Michael Mann used 35mm in mostly the inside scenes, then for most of the outside scenes he used the HD Cam.
35mm film gives an instant cinematic feel. That trailer did not have that cinematic feel.
It was more like the documentary style of Miami Vice which we saw.
However, it could be that he has used 35mm on some scenes in this movie.
they had to erase the guns out of the trailer because it was showed with PG movies.lol
you remember the first trailer that came out?
when Indy and Ray Winstone are being held at gunpoint.
Well, Indy's pants are CGI'd in that scene for the US trailer, and slightly different from the International trailer. His body is at an impossible angle in one shot of that CGI, hence the big uproar over it at the time.
Honestly, this is Depp's movie. Bale plays his antagonist/anti-villain for the most part. It's similar to what Crowe did, but the movie was about Denzel's character. No one wants to see the story about the cop bringing down the iconic gangster, they want the story about the outlaw.
I would say Brad Pitt is more "played out" than him.If you think about it Bale is only in 2 movies this year, how is he getting played out?
I would say Brad Pitt is more "played out" than him.
Bale has been banging around for 20 years and I can pretty much guarantee if you showed his picture to random 20 people on the street a good 15 of them would be hard pressed to tell you his name.I think the intention was done on purpose with Mann's love of that 'cam corder' look of his movies but do you think he's hurting the HD digital movement, or taking a step back?
