Sequels Raimi Speaks.

I'm no die-hard Spidey fan, but honestly, I liked all three Spider-Man movies and would like to see Raimi return.

While I can understand wanting to get new blood, that doesn't neccesarily equate change. In the case of X-men 3 for example, they didn't try and go a different direction. They hired a very bland director to try and copy the style of the previous one. (and not to mention that they didn't change the Wolverine centric story and other such annoyances that people kept complaining about, they didn't all the sudden make Rogue more like the comics. They didn't give Scott or Storm anything more to do, not really anyway).

Since these movies so far have been so succesful, I can see them trying to copy Raimi's style somewhat. Or they could go the Batman route and make it very different. But in a terrible terrible way.

Not to say that it would neccesarily happen. But so far the only time there has been a succesful director switch is when it starts over with new continuity. And even then it doesn't always work. Look at Bryan Singer, he tried to copy what he loved.

I would like to see them change it more. Maybe make it darker, more mature (which is the direction Spider-man 2 was heading) and make Peter more confident as well. But we aren't going to all the sudden get something that is a spitting image of the comics over night. And people who both want to and are expecting to are just going to end up being dissapointed.

Awesaome! as I have said, I really hope Sam and the rest of the cast and crew return.

^ Yeah dude, I agree. Sam gets it. And the cast get it. Hopefully everybody that did the previous Spider-Man movies saw Iron Man this summer and it pumped them up to do a better Spider-Man. 'Cause it's a shame that the Iron Man movie was funnier than all three movies based on Spider-Man. Let's fix that.

On top of that, it seems to me that everything that people complained about from Spider-Man 3 came from problems from the script. So I'm glad Sam isn't writing it but I really hope he comes back to direct.

My, my, my. The fans are extra finicky today.

I saw the article and the messages under it were almost unanimous in "SM3 was a monstrosity" (a sentiment I saw copied here) and "SM4 will be bad if Rami does it! I want his head on a silver plate and blood in a challice!"

Okay maybe not the last one was written, but still. :p

I am fine with a new take if it is good (which given it would be the fourth installment after a waning third one in a popular franchise, I'd have my doubts the best creative team would be put on it). I'm fine with a new director who could bring to the table some ideas that Raimi and his team have not or brought out more of a wisecracking Spidey. I think Tobey Maguire was an inspired casting choice for Peter Parker, but I am open to a more "leading man" actor taking the role and possibly infusing it with that said humor.

With that said Raimi did not **** up the first two and the third movie's backlash is very much an overreaction. I mean if you liked the first two and disliked the third, what is to say Raimi would not learn from his mistakes? I think the third is ripped apart by unruly fanboys here, somewhat undeservedly so. But even if you hate it, how do you know Raimi can't improve if you enjoyed his earlier efforts?

I think Kev. said it best in another thread and to paraphrase:

If they come back -- Great.
If they don't come back and we get a new (and good) creative team -- Great.

It's a win-win. I personally want to see Raimi finish his vision as I know he originally intended to have seen Peter walk down the asile. Let him go there.

And to close this, it's funny. I remember when fans trumpeted SM1 as the most faithful comic book movie ever made and SM2 as the best ever upon its release. They venomously defended Raimi and this franchise from mindless naysayers but also the intelligent critiques observant fans made. Now after SM3, they again can see no nuance or middle ground and have to cry to the heavens how they were wronged and there is no chance Raimi could ever better his series.

because I love Spider-Man.quote]

Yah...sure he does; he loved it so much infact, that all the love he had for the character ufcked up his mind, so in reality, Spider-Man soon became the Spider-Emo-Dude-Who-You-Can-Find-At-The-Next-AFI-Show.

Someone who loves the characters never would have done such monstrosity as was the Green Goblin, and then after that the fiasco that was Spider-Man 3.

And also he ruined every chance of seeing Green Goblin live up to be Spidey's greatest enemy. The main villain should never be used in the first film. (Iron Man and Batman are great examples for that, but it seems they needed nearly a decade to figure that out)

I agree.

Not only did they kill off GG1 but also GG2.

This franchise needs a re-boot, imo.

GG2 that wasn't at all a Green Goblin 2, just Harry with a glider, but it doesn't matter anyway :woot: Even that costume looked more Goblinesque than Norman's.

Why are people trashing Raimi? Hes not bad at all. The reason why Spider-man 3 sucked was because of the script and the conflict between script and studio. As long as Vanderbilt (zodiac) creates a more intense script im damn sure Raimi and Mcguire can pull it off. Get a new villain in there maybe at some spice and temptation with Black Cat and you can have a whole new film. Raimis vision for the first two movies were perfect i say give him a second chance to renew himself. Why the hell not?

nice post i agree with everything you say

That horrible design for the costume! William Dafoe was perfect as Norman, but there is no excuse for those eyelids and that plastic mask.
IMO, it was necessary to have the Goblin armor costume (it was also great, to) because the one from the comics would most likely look goofy on film.

It wasn't that bad, and if it was just the costume you hated than I doubt Raimi ruined GG as a character for you :whatever:

I agree.

Well both stories called for it. You honestly didn't go into SM3 expecting Harry to live did you??

This franchise needs a re-boot, imo.
No not really
Damn Batman Begins in making fanboys trigger happy with the word reboot

Even that costume looked more Goblinesque than Norman's.
I think you need you eyes checked, Harry was wearing a black ninja paintball costume.

Well, then it's a good thing your opinion doesn't matter.

Good thing yours doesn't either. There's quite a few ppl who are tired of McGuire chasing Dunst's ugly ass around as though she' the only woman on earth. I tell ya, i know part of Parkers life is his love for MJ, but Raimi has really beat us over the head with that **** for the past 3 movies, enough is a frickin nuff. Turn it down a notch. It was turning into 'Dawson's Creek: NY'.

Who said he wanted the cast back?

getting new cast =/= reboot

:o

Vanderbilt is new blood.

However nothing is set in stone. There's nothing wrong with Raimi having input considering he was the mastermind behind the franchise. He's not definitely going to direct it.

Also, keep in mind that Hollywood is on the verge of another work strike if no deal is made before 6/30. If that doesn't happen all bets are off.

Basically, this movie is not coming out next year, and probably not even 2010. It could take a while.

I like this news. Yes, I've been disappointed with SM3 (although I actually feel the more I watch it the more I like it), but I don't blame Raimi completely for it. Yeah, he was responsible for some forgettable things like the dancing sequences, but rushed story lines (no backround story) for sandman and venom weren't his fault, especially considering venom was forced on him. I loved the first two films and thought he did a great job, so I'd like to see him return; but only if Sony doesn't decide "what fans want to see."

Unless Hollywood really and truly is run by complete asshats, there will be no SAG strike.

Exactly.

Raimi approved that awful design and even that black ninja costume was better looking than that plastic armor - excuse of a cheap 'goblin' design. But Raimi ruined the story in many other aspects than just in horrible interpretation of the Goblin, and that doesn't mean that Dafoe played perfectly his part as Osborn, but when he is the Goblin he is silly and stupid looking. The switch between Mary Jane and Gwen's character is also Raimi's doing. Dunst should have played Gwen Stacy and she should have been killed there on the bridge... and not continue to be damsel in distress for every future installment. In Spider-Man 2 it worked, but with Spider-Man 3 it was too much. It becomes too predictable.
The fact is that Raimi is making these films not with passion to those characters and stories, but for fame and money. The team behind the new Spider-Man show are real fans of those stories and characters and they're making a perfect job, maybe Raimi, in his pride, should finally realize how things are done for the fans and look at the new show for ideas and inspiration.
