Back when I started seriously collecting back in the early 90's foil, holographic and prismatic covers were all the rage. Then, just like that, they stopped. When I asked Marvel why they had stopped producing these covers they told me that they couldnt afford to keep on producing them. These days some comics are being produced with multiple variant covers. House Of M #1 and Civil War #1 both have 5 covers and every week there are more and more variant covers being announced. Marvel must be making an absolute fortune from the sale of these variants. Surely they could start producing some Foil covers? Even if it's just for anniversary issues?

I doubt Marvel sees much profit from these variant covers, collector's and comic shops are the ones that stand to make the money out of it. Personally, I hate the proliferation of variant covers on recent years. All the gimmick covers we saw in the 90's were part of what lead to the downfall of the industry. I don't mind the odd special anniversary cover here or there but it always makes me think that we could be starting to head up the damned road that was taken barely 10 years ago.

shiny covers are bad for the industry
