Resident Evil 5

Well I got it yesterday and am already in Chapter 3. It feels shorter than RE4, though.

With that said, I am really enjoying it. Playing with the AI is kind of annoying, but i have a buddy who is getting it today or tomorrow and will start a co-op campaign soon, which I'm sure will make it more fun.

It is a very fun game and it is addictive. I just can't help but have a smile on my face as I play it. With that said, I liked Resident Evil 4, it is my favorite in the series. However, they may have gone into the action direction a little too much. It just isn't scary anymore. The atmosphere of RE4 still could be creepy and unnerving and having to protect Ashley while reloading as a Plagas approached with a pitchfork in a stormy night was intense. Nevermind the bugs (which I hear make another appearance in this game...****, I hate those bastards) and those screeching things you need infa-read scopes to kill (which I stupidly missed on first play-through).

Now I am only about a third through the game, but it does not have that suspense. I mean it is an intense-actioner and for my money far better than the Gears of War games, but I never feel scared or unnerved as I did when I heard that bellowing screech in RE4, nevermind the atmosphere and surprises in RE1 and RE2.

Oh well. I'm loving it right now and protecting your partner has become a bigger thing than protecting yourself, so good job Capcom for being one of the few that can make a non co-op team work (though Sheva will do annoying things like waste health or get pinned down).

Also, to those saying it is easier. This is true. But that is the direction of all games these days. Metal Gear Solid 4, while probably my second favorite in the series due to nostalgia for the first and some amazing sequences, is EXTREMELY easy to play through unless you are on Big Boss hard. BioShock, another favorite of this generation, literally does not punish you at all for dying. As much fun as Assassin's Creed is, once you master the complex fight-mechanics you are pretty much invincible. You can beat a Gears of War game on a lazy afternoon. Does anyone actually play single-player Call of Duty, anymore?

Gaming is just becoming increasingly easy this generation. And it is not Nintendo's fault. All companies want to go mainstream and make big money. You do that by not punishing the player. With that said I have died 5 times in the first two chapters. Damn you chainsaw man, you bastard!

RE5: 9.1/10 for now. Can go up or down as I progress.

Glad you like RE5 too. But as for MGS4, I don't really want to continue that discussion. MGS2 and MGS3 were as easy as MGS4 to me, but it's because with all of them I try to be as stealth like and unlock more things by killing very few people, and using almost no guns. A choice you can make with MGS, even on normal, it can get incredibly hard when you do so. I believe some games have defiantly gotten easier, but not all, I just think some believe the older ones were harder due to the fact that they were young when they played the originals. If you go back and play the original MGS it is very easy now adays.

I love Hideo for his ability to create multiple games in one, one person will play it one way have a certain way they feel about it, and others can feel different about it. MGS4 is still my favorite game, gameplay wise, and all around in years. That's what I loved most about MGS4 and MGS3, you could go through the games, and shoot everything if you so wished, and it made the game easier, and if you wanted to play old school/stealth like you could do so as well, and gather an incredibly deep challenging game. But to eaches own on that subject matter. If some choose to play the easy way they can, but I play MGS the hardcore way, and even on normal it is bone crushing as the original. If it is within the gameplay mechanisms, it is part of the game even if not everyone goes that route.

I love how some are complaining about this game being too linear.

Have they never played Resident Evil before? They are extremely linear. Hell 4 was linear itself.

They weren't linear previously, RE4 started the linear action route.

No, they were pretty linear. I mean there was alot of space to explore, but in the end there was only one way to solve most puzzles.

Why would there be other ways to solve a puzzle? If you wanted, you could solve other puzzles and ascertain said item long before you even needed it. Not knowing where the next save room would be and what not. The classic RE's, especially the REmake, were definitely not linear.

Quick question: One the final stage, how do you move the giant rock?

I see what ya mean, i guess the way i look at it, was there really wasn't many options for completing your objectives, outside of the boss battles, but i guess those alone could create a non linear experience.

i loved 4 and 5 but im so curious as where they are going to take number 6

That's not exactly what makes a game "linear". Linear games are ones that have certain set paths without all that extra room to explore (i.e., the newer RE games). The older RE games were pretty good examples on non-linear gameplay (for one of the most extreme examples, Sandbox games [a.k.a. Free-Roaming games], like GTA).

i know u have to pay 5 dollars for online mode but i cant find it on the psn store is it out yet???

The stories and action has always been linear in RE. Just because you can revisit rooms and only access areas in a large area, be it a mansion or police station, does not make it unlinear. There is only one way to do things in an exact order. You have to complete objectives only when the game allows in the exact way the game wants. Not counting that there were basically two games in RE2 (Leon A/Claire B and the uncanon reverse), they all follow this pattern.

RE4/5 may be more action-oriented, but the games have always been linear. I mean by this logic, RE4 was divided into chapters and in each chapter you would double back in the castle or village and explore new areas like the whole of the earlier RE games, the setting just changed with the chapter and stopped after Chapter 3, I believe. Still same idea. All linear games, though.

RE1 allowed you to change up specific paths you take or actions you make to change the ending. I wouldn't go so far as to call the old games 100% Non-Linear, but I wouldn't call them 100% Linear either.

The old games definetly gave a bigger sense of freedom than 4 and 5, but when you get right down to it, they were pretty linear, just dressed up to not look like they were. Sure, you could explore a bunch of rooms before you needed to, but there was always a locked door that you had to go to an earlier room to get through to get the crest to unlock another room to get the key for the room you couldn't get to in the first place, and it pretty much had to be done in that order every time. The only real choices it gave you were on things like Plant 42, where you could poison it or fight it. Not really many choices. And the only things that changed the ending was how well you did the rest of the game, and if you got all the terminals to free Chris/Jill from the prison before you fought the Tyrant and other such things.

Have a question, it's the game worth buying & playing without co-op? I mean, like just single-player?

To be honest, Co-op is the only way to go. I actually found my game to be easier giving my computer partners a stun rod and healing stuff and letting myself take on all the bad guys. If you have a friend who is at least decent at the game, it can be much more fun.

You should download the demo and try it out first. I did and I like it, but since I have too many games and not enough time, I'll wait awhile before I get this one.

I always thought it was Leon A/Claire B. Are you sure?

I'm still in the early stages but I'm enjoying it. Yes its very similar to RE4 but that isn't a bad thing IMO.

If you enjoyed RE4, you should enjoy this. Im at the mid way point of the game and so far, imo, its more fun than i had with RE4. The co-op is damn near flawless. Its one of the best co-op experiences iv had in a game. The real time inventory is really cool, keeps you on ur toes, as well as the decreased item space. Kinda feels closer to the first games than RE4 did. I think youll really enjoy the game.
Cool. Will probably pick it up this weekend.

If ur a fan of the series the game is worth buying regardless.

Ok, thanks for the reply, i will get the game first since i'm a big fan of the series, and soon eventually i will buy another hand-controller. :yay:

I beat it on Veteran. Have about 10 achievements left to get. Working on my Professional game right now, already through chapter one without much hassle. Sheva with the upgraded, infinite ammo magnum is pretty much unstopabble, and plays half of the game for you.
