'Resident Evil' Franchise Gets Quasi-Reboot with 'Begins'

While Sony Screen Gems is prepping for Resident Evil 4: Afterlife, the 3D sequel slated to arrive in theaters August 27, 2010, Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively (and confirmed) that the studio is already looking forward to the fifth film. While Milla Jovovich is confirmed for Afterlife, it's got to be getting expensive and (increasingly) difficult to keep her onboard, even though she is married to producer Paul W.S. Anderson. Instead of moving forward with the ongoing story, the studio is planning a quasi-reboot, which is tentatively titled Resident Evil Begins. While it's a long, long, long way off, the idea is to redo the story of a special military unit who fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident. What do you guys think about a reboot only 8-9 years after the franchise began?

Yeah, doing the first movie all over again.
Why is it so hard to put the freaking Stars there and do it right instead of coming up with something that doesn't belong to the games? They could at least make it more faithful.
YES! Please reboot!:woot:

Should stop this train before it goes off the rails...oh wait it did after Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Why does it need a reboot if they are using the same ****** actors and the same **** production crew?

Also, even if you adapt the games its not that simple to just translate a game level for level into a movie. Hollywood won't do that. Also for something like RE4 it would be very expensive.

I agree that 4 and 5 while amazing games have thin plots and are so meandering and expansive they would not make particularly good films.

But the first three (I'm not counting CV as that is too out there) are very grounded in simple premises and are not divided by levels but trapped in expansive areas. I actually think they would need to be heavily parred down and make the characters more interactive and developed. But Wesker is a great villain, Jill, Claire and Leon are great protagonists (until RE5, I kind of thought Chris sucked, but that gives you more room to rewrite and play with his character) and images like when Jill first discovers a zombie, the Crimson Heads coming back to life near the end as the lights go out, hidden shaodwy giant cockroaches following them in the vents? Lisa as the hunchback sister of Leatherface chasing the characters through the woods at night?

The first one would make a great horror movie. The second two are very Romero-ian and as long as the sci-fi is downplayed more than in the games and again the plots are streamlined there are some very cinematic stories (if a bit B-movieish) in there. RE4 is my favorite in the series but the story is a strung together series of clichés to create a great game experience.

No one is ever going to make them. Its still these ****ing Paul Anderson trash garbage productions.

Good filmmakers might make movies with inspired video game-esque sequences (Edgar Wright comes to mind), but those same directors will continue to not make actual video game movies.

Look at Max Payne. They basically removed everything that was cool and fun about those games even the parts that were kind of cheesy and replaced it with **** that was even cheesier and dumber.

Maybe because Resident Evil 4 has a crapload of backstory that the films pretty much ignored. Not to mention the film would need a pretty big budget. IMO, RE4 wouldn't work as a film as well as it did on a game.

I honestly could care less. To those who want Leon, I don't see why. They ruined Jill, Wesker and Nemesis in the movies and Claire and Carlos were so flat I couldn't tell if they were ruined or just cardboard. And what they did to the story and plot, not just by making it about Alice, but Alice with superpowers fighting a faceless Umbrella full of Eurotrash left over from bad '80s movies in a poor man's Mad Max rip-off.

No interest in seeing more.

May I use this as a signature?:awesome: Awesome.

Agreed. Most great directors would avoid a video game movie like the plague. But it doesn't mean solid B-movie or two couldn't have been made based on the first two RE games at least. Oh well.

If that's true...what happened to the 'Army of Alices'? Are they going to have one post apocalyptic battle that wipes out all but the original Alice?

I guess what happened to them is what happened to Dr. Birkin after RE1, Jill, the little girl and most of planet earth between REA and REE....dropped without explanation due to bad writing.

So does this mean Chris Redfield is going to be in the new movie? I hope they figure out that Chris is supposed to be Claire's sister since she is coming back, but I wouldn't count on it. That would require playing the game.

I've enjoyed playing most the games, the movies not so much.

I'm looking forward to this. As a fan of the movies AND the games, I think it's great they're getting the ball rolling.

These films ..wow.... Anyways I hope they get Chris in there .

Hopefully they bring in some aliens, the abominable snowman, swampthing and a few other new things that have nothing to do with the game. Anderson is a moron, and a quasi reboot is ******ed because it still has nothing to do with the game.

They should have Leon, Barry, Rebecca, Claire, Jill and Chris and others be survivors in Japan. And this would be like an alternate universe for if Umbrella had won. So there was never a BSAA or Tricell.

However, Alice's interpretation of what happened, would have been wrong. The entire world was not destroyed just the united states. Canada, and South America are fine. Obviously, europe and asia would have been untouched.

But that army of Alice from the end of the last movie will have gone around killing all the zombies and monsters, making the country safe again.

However, Alice is now considered a monster and threat. and they were experimenting in Japan to create more BOWS of her and more zombies.

And so Alice will die at the hands of Jill Valentine and Chris redfield.

What they should have done is give the fans what the wanted in 2002. A semi faithful retailing of the first game.

I still didn't dislike the first movie.

I hate all the movies. But that's me. And anything to see Milla J.
