The Dark Knight Rises Riddle Me This: The Riddler Characterization Thread

Well Jim Carrey did give a barn storming performance, same with Tommy Lee Jones. It's just the way their characters were written and the overall direction of the film that let them down. I actually thought Jim Carrey was awesome to be honest, and they did get his obsessive nature right as Edward Nygma, completely infatuated with Bruce Wayne then Batman. But it all just got too campy and over the top after the first half.

yeah i mean why did he have to be so campy I mean he was kinda dark at first, so why change that just didnt seem like he was as obsessed with Bruce just seemed he was out to have fun.

Yea I agree, Batman Forever started off so well IMO. Then it just trailed off into a world of bright colours and cheese. Two Face's opening scene was brilliant, his whole speech about luck was intensely delivered by TLJ. And Nygma started off pretty creepy with his crazy obsession with Wayne when he came down to the lab thingy. Bruce's issues with duality and his fathers journal. Then it just went sooooo over the top in the last half. Riddler and Two-Face all of a sudden became Joker rip-offs and it fell apart.

Riddler is a dark character when you think about it, I think there is a lot of potential for him in Nolans hands.

yeah to be honest chases' rubber fetish got on my nerves and robin doing laundry so was needed but a lot of it made a good movie its just bits of pieces were ur like huh?

but yeah riddler is a dark character i mean i've seen documentary were they compared him to Ted Bundy who was leaving clues to be found lol. and if you add robin it makes Batman a darker character even though some don't agree.

Yeah Batman:Unmasked, its on the special features from the blu-ray. It's a fantastic documentary about batman and his rogue. :brucebat:

Jim Carrey was fantastic as the Riddler... but he has grown a lot as an actor since then. I'd love to see him take another stab at it, with a whole new take on the character under the direction of Nolan... though I'm sad it'll never happen. :(

Yea I watched the Blu-Ray round my cousins on Christmas Day. He's got some massive 48inch HDTV, it was awesome. And yea that documentary about the phyche of Batman and his rogues was very interesting.

See, I think the Fed route is the best idea for the Riddler on these boards. It's a nice little twist on the super villain, have him be on the inside with the good guys, but the good guys (cops) are going to be hunting the hero(Batman). But obviously Gordon could be tipping Batman off about whats happening, the Agent Nashton/Nygma could get suspicious and as he gets more and more obsessed with catching Batman he could become unstable and start putting peoples lives at risk. Secretely taking on the persona of "The Riddler" and setting up traps and situations involving innocents, fellow cops and maybe even Gordon himself eventually, all with the purpose of luring Batman out.

I like the Fed idea too and I think another good idea to lure Batman out would be too have the Riddler arrange the escape of the Joker from Arkham. Another cool idea I read here on the boards somewhere.

the fed idea is good, but wouldn't it be a good twist if he wasn't really a fed at all like the whole operation is a fraud they all think he and his team are feds but they are really riddler and his men and they have kidnapped or either killed the real feds who were meant to b brought in so that nygma can get in the foreground of things so he can find out who batman is.

Yea that would be awesome. If it was like the finale of the film it would be epic. That is a great way to live up to TDK I think.

Nolan is gonna want to end this trilogy(which it will most likely be) with a bang. IMO the Joker has to be involved some how in that bang. The idea of Riddler springing him to go on a rampage through Gotham would be epic. You wouldn't even have to see the Joker full on either.

Thats a great idea too. Nice twist to it. But I think the Fed idea works best because he would have power over the whole of Gothams authorities, if he can do that with the fraud twist it would be awesome, hard to pull off but awesome.

yeah it be hard to pull off but thats the thing about the riddle you know he'd be able to conterfiet document papers and be able to pass himself off as a fed. In my opinion paul bettany should be riddler.

What so special about Paul Bettany . The guy is a mediocre actor at best . I never understood why people wanted him to be the joker, now the riddler

Brad Pitt underrated? Paul Bettany mediocre at best? Hmmmm.

I think everyone knows Pitt is a great actor, since when has he been underrated? And I think alot of people think that Bettany is a great actor.

And creepy. The guy put on a fake mole.

That was me.

But i'm so against a recast that i regret i even brought it up now. If Heath were around, defenitely. I think instead of that he can make deals with Penguin/Black Mask/Scarecrow or something.

Guy Pierce is my #1 pick, with David Cross, Edward Norton, and Jim Carrey following. Jim Carrey could do a great job if we used the acting chops we saw in Eternal Sunshine.

goofy, funny, mysterious, and even creepy aren't necessarily enough. Heath Ledger as the Joker had that testerone driven ferocity.

I'm not sure if Depp or Jim Carey pull that off. Does the Riddler need to be like that? I'm not sure.
