The Dark Knight Rises Riddle Me This: The Riddler Characterization Thread

No problem Jolly C. Yes the mask should be stylised like that. Maybe with painted question marks going around it. Riddler will obviously not want ANYBODY knowing his identity if the movie is a mystery/thriller.

His cain. That should just be a regular one,but a dark emerald colour.

I agree that the Riddler shouldn't be a murderer like John Doe in Seven. I think I mentioned that it should be the riddles or traps that are the stars of the show, but not necessarily do they have to invole murder. I think the Riddler will have to do something that endangers people's lives though. I just think that having him as a bank theif or jewel thief wouldn't be all that interesting.

Hmmm ok...i was also wondering if his cane should be one of his weapons like say he had a hidden gun in it or something?

Not to mention it would be major step down after the crimes of Ra's, Scarecrow, the Joker, and Two-Face.

anyone get the chance to read my script. I'd love to hear some thoughts if anyone has one. Only 27 pages :yay:

I'm not a big fan of downloading, so if you post your script on here, I'll read it and let you know what I think.

How about a new take on the outfit?

Maybe have riddles in writing, scrawled across his jacket and once each same riddle is completed by Batman,he paints a big question mark over them. His clothing should be personal to him for some reason. Maybe have him wear a black suit and a long olive green overcoat. The question mark isnt just a regular QM,its his own personal symbol. As the Bat is to Bruce.

Why he draws over the riddles with question marks? Cause it symbolises Batmans completion, which is what Riddler is pretty much expecting, but hopes it will be left drastically unmarked and Batman will die during the challenges and prove he is better. By the end Riddler is hoping the last riddle will not be marked and he is sure Batman will fail at it. But in the end the coat will symbolise Batmans triumph and Riddlers failure...Which he will not be happy about and Riddler will keep his outfit as reminder to make sure he tries harder to beat Batman in future.

Riddler should be a recently fired or relived detective. Fired over something shifty,or forced to retire through an injury substained to his leg. He thinks he has nothing else worth living for, except his obsessive questions spur him to live and seek answers.

Not hell bent on catching Batman or discovering Batmans identity. But in competition with him. Trying to prove if Batman has the ultimate detectives, better than him, which Riddler has obviously heard about and seen and is obsessivly jealous about. Hence, his costume, it is detective clothing.

I've been thinking a lot about the Riddler's character, and I honestly think that "Edward Nashton" should come across very educated in his dialogue, while "the Riddler" should come across as very to-the-point. I don't want the cheesy riddles in his dialogue either, but if it's appropriate for his character at some point in a given scene then I wouldn't mind it. But I think it would be interesting to see a "sadistically sophisticated" kind of Riddler. also, no mask. it's not necessary..give him some cool sunglasses and a nicely tailored dark green suit, make him look spiffy while he's causing mayhem and messing with Batman's head

I don't want him to have any question marks on his suit, leave them for crime scenes. He should wear a black suit with a green tie and shirt with a black and green fedora with sunglasses on. He should have an arrogant swagger in his walk as well imo.

That's probably the best way to separate him from the Joker, I guess you could use the analogy that The Joker is full on punk rock, whilst the Riddler is more a classical composition.

The question marks on the outfit? As long as there is a reason behind it.

1 interpretation is that he sports them to get attention from Bruce. They are kind of necessary,as his colours dont stand out as much as in the comics. That suit is ultimately what helps Batman and Gordon unlock the final riddle,by deducting the black and green words on the riddle sheets of paper, into an anagram. "MystEry. INvEstIGAtIoN=ENIGMA". Gordon then remembers that the police officer he framed ran a PI service, entitled "Enigma Solved". Nashton briefly uses the name, but decides that the name the press dub him sounds more appropriate. Batman realises that everything has been about Riddler himself from wanting to slowly reveal his life, his motivations and even his favourite colurs. Batman has no doubt that Riddlers final question will involve a confrontation and a personal riddle about Nashton in general.

The costume as I put it
Black suit, white shirt, olive green tie. An olive green overcoat and a brown fedora hat.

yes and no..where the Joker was very extreme in his methods, the Riddler is a far more subtle animal. the similarity is how they become known to Gotham at large. yes, the Joker is evil, but the Riddler is a whole different kind of evil and, in some respect, a more dangerous evil than the Joker: the Joker is evil because he's evil, Nashton is evil because he has a purpose. if Heath's Joker was like Jaws, then the Riddler needs to be Hannibal Lecter and the Zodiac Killer rolled into one: very smart, very deadly. so it's not a matter of punkrock/classical but about extreme/subtle. the same result but a differe t approach

INT. GOTHAM COUNTY FAIR - NIGHT

OVER CARNIVAL MUSIC...

DARKNESS. The following is a quick succession of shots randomly cutting to black:

We hear yelling and screaming. Then BLAM! BLAM! Errant gun fire... Then vociferous cackling. The JOKER. More screaming and yelling...

EVERYTHING GROWS MORE SILENT... Only the sound of hard breathing and running. A quick shot of BATMAN in pursuit... trudging, badly wounded but enduring.

We’re in a “TUNNEL OF LOVE” type amusement ride. Dark and ominous. Knee high water splashes as the foot chase ensues down the waterway.
Batman hurls himself, lands hard on top of the Joker... It’s blurry, frantic. Fast and furious. A blinding mass of limbs and fists... We see glimpses of a scarred mouth and messy clown makeup... glimpses of a dark cowl and cloak... Batman grunts. The Joker giggles uncontrollably. The struggle grows more indistinct. Chaotic. Desperate... And we hear a vicious snapping sound!

Everything settles and comes into focus. We find Batman seated, clutching his abdomen, breathing laboriously, on the verge of blacking out. He looks across at the Joker, obscured in the shadows. The Joker giggles.

JOKER
Still won’t do it, will you? After all the things I’ve done...
(laughs)
... and you snap my neck... like a pencil...
(laughs)
Oh, so very disappointing.

Batman considers the Joker for a moment.

JOKER (CONT’D)
What’s the matter, bat got your tongue?
(laughs; then)
Do I hear sirens? Yes. Coming close. They’ll crucify you for this, you know. This time... ’S like I’ve been saying all along.

Joker winks, starts laughing. Batman struggles to get up. Joker’s laughing grows louder, more foreboding. Batman moves quickly now, stumbling and bleeding. Trying to escape.

The sirens echo through the tunnel.

EXT. CARNIVAL – CONTINUOUS

Tires screech, doors fly open. UNIFORMED COPS pour out of police vehicles.

INT. TUNNEL OF LOVE – MOMENTS LATER

It’s dark as hell inside. Cops approach the Joker’s wrecked body warily, weapons drawn. Flashlights play across his wicked grin. Some cops wince at the sight.

COP #1
Holy God in heaven!

JOKER
He ain’t pretty no more.

The Joker laughs manically. Enough to freeze your blood.

And fade to black –-

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM – PEÑA DURO PRISON – SANTA PRISCA - DAY

We’re in an old style prison, dating back a century or more.
Meet TALIA AL GHUL. Mid-20s. European with a mixture of Chinese and Arabic. Real beauty hidden beneath all the seriousness and brooding. She’s seated in the center of the room, flanked by two massive bodyguards.
Barred doors slide open. A guard unchains a prisoner and motions him inside the room. The prisoner is NESTOR MENDOZA, a no-age large man, darkly bearded, powerfully built. He stands in the shadows a few feet from Talia.

TALIA
Nestor Mendoza? Or is it Bane?

No response from Nestor/Bane. Talia rises, steps closer.

TALIA (cont’d)
Do you know who I am?

Again no response.

TALIA (cont’d)
My name is Talia. You knew my father. Ra’s Al Ghul?

Bane reacts to the name.

TALIA (cont’d)
You were his most loyal student. The smartest and strongest... The most dedicated. You directed many of the League’s efforts, bringing about chaos and disorder wherever you were assigned.
(pause; then)
You were groomed to lead. And then you ended up in here.

A beat to digest this.

TALIA (cont’d)
My father is now dead. Murdered. I need your help getting the man responsible.

Bane raises an eyebrow.

BANE
And who may that be?

Talia steps closer so that they’re eye-to-eye.

TALIA
Batman.

INT. APARTMENT – BEDROOM – MORNING

CLOSE ON BRUCE WAYNE as his eyes pop open. He sits up, looks down at the sleeping body beside him. Meet SELINA KYLE, 30s, exotic and beautiful.

INT. APARTMENT – KITCHEN – MOMENTS LATER

Bruce sits in front of the small kitchen TV tuned to the news. SUPER ON TV reads “Batman: Vigilantism at its Deadliest”.

During this Bruce notices a black cat leap onto the window sill. The cat stares back at Bruce fixedly. An almost evil stare. It snarls then hisses, arching its back.

A hand lands on Bruce’s shoulder. Bruce reacts. It’s Selina. She smiles, wraps her arms around Bruce. She follows his gaze to the window sill.

SELINA
(re: cat)
I think Otto likes you.

BRUCE
Otto?
(then)
“Like” to claw my eyes out, maybe.
Selina chuckles, sits on his lap. She glances at the TV.

SELINA
Geez, where were the naysayers when the Joker had the city on it knees? How typical of society, shun the hero when he’s down.

Bruce looks at her, surprised.

BRUCE
You sympathize with that madman?

SELINA
Batman? Sure. Why not? He’s sexy. Dark. Dangerous.
(then, poignant)
Alone...

Bruce looks at Selina wondering, then smiles.

SELINA (cont’d)
What?

BRUCE
Nothing.
(shrugs; smiles)
Should I be worried?

How about this riddle:

A guy is at his house, making out with his girlfriend, when suddenly the phone rings. He answers it and a voice says 'TOUCH MY DAUGHTER AGAIN AND I'LL KILL YOU', and then the line goes dead. The guy asks his girlfriend about it and she says 'My dad's been dead for 10 years..'"
BUT WHO WAS PHONE? :awesome::hehe:

Mom right? :awesome:

Is the Joker part a dream sequence? If so, I quite like it, it makes you think what the hell's going on.

Talia and Bane part is alright.

Not to keen on Catwoman being introduced as someone Bruce has just screwed. The scene is good in itself but I just feel that it is a little bit premature in the story. I know they have a relationship in the comics, but to the general audience, I think she needs a little bit of introducing before they head to the bedroom.:yay:

No dream. I figure with Ledger gone we can forget about the Joker in this Batman series. I thought it was a pretty cool intro. Give the Joker a good sending off. He's not dead, just crippled.

Bane.... Ras' student.... Oh come on now!
Why not :csad:

Bane does not need Ras help on how to fight...He can charge himself up with the venom making him super humanly strong.

Bane does not need Ras help on how to fight...He can charge himself up with the venom making him super humanly strong.

brawn doesn't equal brains. Anyway, IMO venom doesn't have room in the Nolan universe. My interpretation of Bane is a methodical and systematic villain, not some meat head dressed like a wrestler. Plus it makes for an interesting match up... two former students, pitted against one another in combat.

Plus where would you get a beefed up actor to play Bane who can actually act.

Bane is smart though....Read Batman Knightfall...How he sets everything up.

yep, but how does he get smart tho, read a couple of books in some run down prison library  Why does he decide to get to Bamtan/Bruce Wayne with a sun tzu approach, using a behind-the-scenes approach rather than in a more forthright manner like other Batman villains? It makes more sense that he learned these things from Ra's, much like Bruce did.

SELINA

Hmm, rich as well as handsome.

Selina leans in almost cat-like. They kiss tenderly.

INT. WAYNE MANOR – KITCHEN - LATER

ALFRED PENNYWORTH in his butler uniform, seated in the mega-sized kitchen, the morning paper in hand, fully engrossed. His face wrinkles with worry as he reads.
Suddenly we hear the loud ROAR of a motorcycle marking Bruce’s arrival.
Alfred sets the newspaper down. He sips some tea, waits patiently on Bruce to enter.

A moment and Bruce enters the kitchen. A beat as he and Alfred stare off, poker faces.

ALFRED
Master Wayne.

BRUCE

Alfred.

Bruce nods, continues on.

ALFRED

ALFRED (cont’d)

When you first endeavored on this path Master Wayne, I had my reservations. As a matter of fact, I even doubted the sincerity of it all. But overtime, I came round. When you absconded from day-to-day normalcy... When you were putting criminals in the ER.
(then)
I believed in what you were doing, Master Wayne. I believed in what you stood for. But now you’ve gone too far. You’ve crossed that fine line, sir. And I’m rather worried.

GORDON

Yes, sir.

Because there is nothing about him that could place him as Ras' student.
1) He is already very smart, so he doesnt need to be second to someone
2) He is more of a wrestler than a ninja
3) He doesnt give a crap about Ras' aims. He came to Gotham to break the bat as a sort of challenge.
4) I dont think Ras would condone the use of steroids/drugs. He'd use it as an example of man's decadence.

So all in all, he is a very different character to just make him a member of the League of Shadows.

yep, but how does he get smart tho, read a couple of books in some run down prison library  Why does he decide to get to Bamtan/Bruce Wayne with a sun tzu approach, using a behind-the-scenes approach rather than in a more forthright manner like other Batman villains? It makes more sense that he learned these things from Ra's, much like Bruce did.

That was a great read. I can imagine these in Batman 3.
