Homecoming Robert Downey Jr IS Tony Stark / Iron Man

In other news, the sky is falling.

Some things may be troublesome (notably the writers). But seriously Marvel has proven time and time again they know what they are doing. Haven't seen Civil War yet, but everything I have heard that they nailed Spider-Man AND Peter Parker. He's been stealing scenes, including I'm guessing those with RDJ.

Considering the utter CRAP Sony has given us in the last couple of Spider-Man movies, I'll take a little "world connecting" to get Marvel Studios making these films!

At the end of the day, i'm sure nothng can be worse than SM3, ASM1 and 2.

Sony's last three Spider-man movies have ranged from mediocre to downright embarassing.
Marvel, the studio in charge of the highest-grossing film franchise of all time and has yet to fail, is now in creative control of the Spider-man film series. This is their crown jewel. They endeared audiences to a talking raccoon and a guy who rides ants, I think they can handle one of the most popular superheroes of all time.
Now we have word that Tony Stark, the most profitable superhero of our time, is going to be making an appearance? Hell yeah, I'm excited. Obviously I want this to be a stand-alone, satisfying Spider-man story, but let's not pretend we can't have that with an appearance from RDJ. At the moment I see no reason to be anything worse than cautiously optimistic.

I'm actually pretty excited about this, despite being one of the sceptics when I learnt of RDJ being in CW because I loved WS so much and wasn't much of a Tony fan. But everything I've heard about CW leads me to believe I'll get a new appreciation for Tony.

Also it was unrealistic the way some of you guys think Marvel would only want to use Spidey for their connected universe in the avengers films and have sony style solo films. They aren't getting the profits of Spider-man so the appeal of that deal for them is Spidey in Avengers films and being able to develop their own characters in Spidey films without the cost. Also it seems like RDJ was a big fan so they want to keep their golden boy happy.

Announce Chris Evans in it and I'm even happier! :woot:

Captain America and Iron Man in a Spidey movie would be epic

I'd prefer Hulk in a Spidey movie. Up until RDJ's IM, Hulk and Spidey were the Batman and Superman of the Marvel universe.

True, how times have changed. Regardless any interaction between Spidey and MCU character is good enough. He'll definately get more interactions in IW.

Yeah he's totally the doc brown to spidey's Marty. I love how old he makes him feel

Speaking of relationships when we get more Spidey interaction I'd like him to get something out of each of them.-Stark is his intelligence, I want Peter to suprise Stark with his mind.
-Cap is his selflessness, I want a moment where Peter doubts his need to be Spidey but Cap re-assures him it's not about being liked it's about being a hero.
-I want Hulk to get something out of Spidey instead, gentleness, sometimes everything can't be smashed.
-For Thor I want him to be shocked by how far Spidey is willing to go to protect those he loves, showing Spideys own "warrior spirit".

That's a straw man and you know it. Him being in the MCU shouldn't necessarily translate to having other heroes showing up in his own films, especially when many of those excited for the Marvel/Sony deal clearly expressed interest in the idea of Spidey's films still feeling relatively standalone compared to the Avengers ones.

It's not a straw, it's exactly what's going on right now. People don't even know how long he's going to be in the movie and already they think he's going to steal the spotlight. People need to relaxxxxxxxxxx. The only movie outside of Avengers movies that RDJ was in is Civil War, and he's the "antagonist". People who have seen Civil War know the relationship Tony has with Peter, they're going to expand on that in Homecoming. I love it.

I'd prefer a relationship like that between Parker and Banner.

I don't know, to be honest I've always thought spidey/hulk is more interesting than spidey/banner but spidey/iron man is one of the best relationships because Tony is exactly what Peter would love to be one day

Not really. While Hulk has been in Spider-Man stories a lot, there is one hero who has teamed up with Spider-Man the most outside of Johnny Storm - and that's ol horn head who has the more gritty vigilante angle going for him. Granted the Hulk is not that far behind those two.

For those interested Charlie Cox has said that he's more than interested in joining up with Spider-Man. Plus, interestingly, Holland and Bernthal are friends - they auditioned for Spider-Man and the Punisher off of each other so that famous triad (fingers crossed) might happen at some point.

As someone said, I'd liken Banner more to Doc Brown or (to bounce off of DC) almost Harrison Wells (season 2, Flash) due the fact that Peter never really knows when Banner will, and often does, Hulk out - with Mister Fantastic being the more stable father figure scientist of the two. Both basically exactly similar, just one brings more safety and less risk of a Hulk-out.

For those wondering, at a fast glance, Spidey and Iron Man team ups (solely about them teaming up) are:

Invincible Iron Man 7 (2009)
Marvel Team Up v1: 9, 29, 48&49, 51, 72, 110
The Invincible Iron Man #234
The Amazing Spider-Man 25th Anniversary Annual

I would say my favorite line between those two is from Civil War (the comic arc), I don't know the exact phrasing of it - but it was about Tony telling Peter he could easily see he wears his need for a father figure on his sleeve. I'd say that's a role that Tony, Reed, Bruce, and Steve all basically function as in Peter's life especially the first three.

I don't think Daredevil will ever join up with Spidey sadly...

I'm not talking about team ups, i'm talking about their iconic status and GA recognizablity within the Marvel brand. IM has been pushed to the forefront thanks to RDJ, but before that Spidey and Hulk were Marvel's two most iconic figures, just as Superman and Batman are DC's.

i've seen civil war and all i can say is im excited for RDJ to be in homecoming, him being in civil war didn detract from cap, it truly felt like a cap movie despite having so any avengers, also RDJ was great in it. i loved the dynamic between peter/spider and tony/iron man, also tom holland and RDJ bounce off each other wonderfully. so im interested to see where their relationship goes. it can still be a spidey film with tony in it, you dont have to choose either a standalone spidey movie or RDJ meaning spidey will be overshadowed, im pretty sure marvel know what they are doing. plus what were some expecting, we have 5 standalone, if i wanted more i'd be wanting ASM3. also most of the time people really wanted spidey back to marvel so he could interact and build relationships with the avengers. as if the deal would have been made to have no one crossing over to spidey films here and there, i mean his part of the MCU now. its gonna happen.

That would be true only if the issue discussed is Tony potentially stealing the spotlight, which it isn't. As a result it's a straw man.

What's the issue? You feel as though Tony is a crutch for Spidey? Are people worried that he won't become a hero on his own without Uncle Tony helping him out?

Yes. We don't know for sure it won't happen, so I can't dismiss the idea either. You yourself admitted this will "expand on his relationship with Tony" from Civil War. I don't even know what his relationship with Tony is (haven't read the spoilers), so that alone gives me no reassurance.

Now you might say "it's unlikely Marvel will do that cuz reasons xyz." Ok, except now you'd be moving the goal posts. Here's what your original argument was,the one which I was replying to:

2 years ago- "Spider-Man belongs in the MCU! I hate you Sony! Let him interact with the other Avengers! It's where he belongs! :o"

Now- "OMG Iron-Man is in the movie? Why would they do that? Can't we just get a Spider-Man movie? My God... :o"

You weren't criticizing people's notion of Tony's role, you were stating people have a problem with Tony just being in it by default. That's a straw man no matter what way you look at it.

They're both under the same umbrella? They're mad because he's in the movie. Why are they mad? Because of the fear of Spidey being overshadowed and using Iron Man as a crutch. Nobody is just mad because he's just IN the movie. They feel threatened for whatever reason I can't understand. They fail to realize how having Iron Man in this movie is going to help set a solid foundation to this new Spider-Man. 10 minutes in Civil War wasn't enough to do that. He's now going to have an entire movie devoted towards him.

I've read the spoilers and you clearly haven't. So once you see the movie and his scenes with Tony you'll understand why I'm not worried at all about RDJ joining the cast. I actually can't wait.

After the movie comes out we'll all laugh about how people thought it would negatively affect the movie. Sony and Marvel are lucky RDJ is gracing this movie with his presence. I know that sounds arrogant, but the guy turns everything he touches into gold. A Spider-Man movie with RDJ involved is a dream of mine that's coming true. It's just sad to see people viewing this as a negative thing. But to each their own.

Your forgetting Wolverine I think him and Spidey is more iconic. :yay:

Not to the General public. The 90's cartoon and Jackman made Wolverine more of a household name, before that going back to the 70's and 80's, Hulk and Spider-Man were Marvel's flagship characters thanks to the numerous television (cartoon and live action) shows they had.

Nick Fury was quite involved in the ultimate books as Spideys Mentor but he didnt overshadow Spidey.I expect the same will be the case with Ironman as the Mentor.Marve knows what they are doing
