Robin Hood Reboot: Avengers Style

Comic books and Robin Hood are two different things. You can argue about the archetypes, the influences in culture, and heroism, but on a surface level, you’re talking about folklore from hundreds and hundreds of years ago. There isn’t a demand for more movies like these..you don’t see kids wearing Robin Hood PJs unless it’s the Disney Fox version...and if you’re gonna start rebirth of this genre, then do it right.
Forget PJs, when I was a kid I really loved my toy bow & arrows imagining myself like Robin Hood.

My favorite show in 1975 was Mel Brooks' "When Things were Rotten", a Robin Hood parody that only lasted for six months before being canceled. It was pretty silly but fun.

I can’t help but feel Egerton is miscast here. Robin Hood might be the most miscast character in modern film history. Costner (too American), Crowe (too bloody old) and now Egerton (yeah, I know he’s almost 30 but he looks like he’s 16).

Also, whoever the costume designer is on this movie should never work again.

Sometimes they get it right.

At least Cary Elwes was good.

But still entertaining and dramatic.

In all seriousness though, I do think there is some kind of franchise potential in Robin Hood... Just not in the big blockbuster way that Hollywood wants. Like King Arthur, you've got a wide enough selection of characters that you could build a great ensemble, but you have to play it safe and make a good single entry first, not try to launch the whole thing in one go.

That BBC show from a few years back had some of the right ideas, but never got a good enough lore and planning behind it too work. You could easily make another TV series with multiple antagonists of different types: corrupt law enforcement in the Sheriff, Machiavellian politics in Prince John, competing outlaw/bounty hunting/Rival knight in Guy Of Gisborne, hero killing assassin in Red Roger of Doncaster, familial betrayal in the Prioress of Kirklees... And you could easily tie them together for a series arc if you wanted to.

The issue is getting a good enough story and Robin Hood out there to make it all work.

The BBC series from about 10 years ago did pretty well and lasted for three seasons. I liked that show and the Three Musketeers BBC show. Great shows? No, but they were fun adventure TV show shows. I'd say they were both far from being historically accurate as well.

That being said, I don't think you are getting a major movie franchise out of Robin Hood anytime soon, just like with King Arthur. WB with King Arthur wanted a six-movie franchise. Not sure how they got 6 movies out of that whole mess, but whatevs.

Yeah, I forgot about Cary Elwes. I imagine him as Robin in Prince of Thieves (going up against Rickman’s amazing Sheriff of Nottingham) and I think of how great that movie could have been. Never saw the Connery one; guess I need to get on that.

I tried watching that BBC show but I just couldn’t get into it. It almost felt like a parody to me... like they were applying the formula of the 1960s Batman TV show to Robin Hood.

If you want a traditional take on Robin Hood the best is still:

A really good restoration was released on Blu-Ray and it's not expensive to buy.

^^^ I agree with marvolo. I miss that fun and swashbuckling Robin Hood from my childhood. Considering all the crappy/boring versions we've seen during the last decades, I need a good and smart remake with something like the Flynn version as a ground.

Even the animated Disney version from the mid 70s is way more entertaining than many efforts in later decades.

I just wait for the First Trailer to say that it looks Horrible , i m not like some guys here who judge from pictures

:whatever: The extremely anachronistic costume designs aren't going to be any better in the trailer.

King Arthur you could get a couple of movies out of.
His rise to power.
Quest for the holy grail.
Merlins backstory.
Gawain and the green knight.
Prince Valiant.

Robin Hood i don't see. None of the others really have much of a story. You could make it up (as all stories are) but doubt many would be interested.

People got scared of fun Robin Hood after the Mel Brooks one apparently.

than tell hollywood that we doesnt need Trailers and TV Spots anymore , and that from now on we only need pictures to tell that everything in a movie sucks :loco:

Neither trailers or movie stills are necessary to judge a movie.
Nowdays everyone just goes by the description and spoilers on the Lego Box set, to know if the movie will be a good or not.
As long as Little John has his classic size changing powers we're good!
And we better get Will Scarlet' with his mutant hex power. :cwink:

X100. It can't be that hard to write a Robin who's compassionate, brave, AND having a great time while he's sticking it to The Man. Enough with the serious, dark gritty stuff already.

One of my favorite scenes from the Flynn Robin Hood is the part where he takes Marian to the place in the forest where they're sheltering all the victims of the oppressive regime and you see the serious side of his efforts. Flynn was really able to pull off both sides of the character, the funloving outlaw who loves tweaking the bad guys and the crusader against injustice. Modern moviemakers don't seem interested in that balance, which is a shame because that's what the original stories were all about.

And the 1972 Robin Hood cartoon was one of my fave movies as a kid. It's pretty flawed but it's got its moments!

Oh the Flynn version was definitely the best cinematic version of this story. You'll certainly get no arguments from me on that one. One of the best movies ever made.

Well, as long as you come to the conclusion that it looks horrible. How you come to that conclusion is entirely up to you.

Yeah, for sure. My only complaint is how they minimized the Sheriff’s role. But hey, Rathbone’s Guy of Gisbourne is a fantastic villain.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm mostly okay with it though because much of the traditional Sheriff's character is merged with that of Sir Guy. Plus the movie has Claude Rains as John Lackland and he's always great.

Yeah, for sure. Man, now I want to watch that movie again. It’s been decades since I’ve seen it.
