I just read an article about Brandon Routh's training regiment and diet in preperation for Superman Returns, and all my question's about Routh's physique were answered in a couple of paragraphs, and I just want to add in before I get started that yes, he wears a muscle suit.

In the article, Routh says that while training for Superman Returns, he mostly stuck to circuit style weight lifting, which is for the most part machines, and ate alot of fruits and veggies for his diet. I was in f-ing amazement after reading this article. That is NOT how you bulk up for a superhero role in which your character you play is supposed to be a bulkier guy. I know Routh was doing what he was told, but damn, change up who your listening to. Even Tobey Maguire hit the heavy wieghts and drank six protein shakes a day along with pasta, cheese, and what not, and even then all he got was really cut, where as Superman should look like a big strong farm boy, ala Tom Welling.

Brandon, for the sequel, hit the big heavy weights an hour a day and scarf down all the food you want except fast food and pop. And then, about 4-6 weeks before filming, clamp down on the diet with more lean proteins and less carbs.

i could care less what he does to his body as long as he looks the same way he did in retuns.

Routh can be improved on, but thats just my opinion. A better written script and better dialouge can only help though.

what? did you see the movie? routh looked fantastic.... made Reeve look like a dorky twig. Sorry die-hards...

Brandon looked great in the film. Retconned, are you really Venom420? Someone said you were.

Lets reverse that question. Did you see the movie?

Are you Kane, the guy who accused me of being someone else? You have to be, you just now registered your account, and this accusation was made back in early June.

I could tell he obviously had some padding over his legs to signify really defined muscular quadriceps, but I never knew he wore a full-body suit.

He has a swimmer's body. He was built more like Spider-Man than Superman. All though, when you are as strong as Superman what in God's name can you left in order to build muscle mass?

A 6'4, 225 lb person is not that big of a person and certainly wouldn't be as large as what is often drawn in the comics.

His size in SR was perfect.

Anyone who thinks he should look like he's drawn in the comics, go look at the guy who played in that fan film...

Routh could stand to put on a few lbs. but I thought his size was perfect.

Because of the cape, it looks best to have a tall and kinda "slim" supes.

And I already said I was told by someone else. It doesnt matter if you are, Im just wondering why you made another account?

Retconned, rumour mill says that Routh was forced to either trim down/ take off some bulk that he gained in the gym since he couldnt fit in the musclesuit i mean supersuit.

so Routh can get bigger, its just that it wasnt utilized for the movie.

just one more reason to hate the costume :o

Actually, his rationale for eating ample fruits and veggies throughout the diet is warranted. I train people for a living. Keeping those in the diet helps to curb insulin spikes (which is a prime hormonal contributor to bodyfat storage) in the case of veggies, and replenishes glycogen stores in the case of some fruits. This is why he looked large, but very defined throughout the film. Whereas, Reeve got fat during the filming of S:TM due to Prowse's archaic methods(for proof visit Caped Wonder to see him without a shirt). Routh put on considerable weight for the filming and was consuming ample amounts of protein to do so. The chief reason for this is the fact we know he gained lean weight (as he looked very lean in the film), and that it is physically IMPOSSIBLE to gain muscle mass without ample protein consumption. Cheese is not a contributor to lean mass gain. It's primarily composed of saturated animal fat and has minimal protein to match. Tom Welling has softened considerably since season one, so Routh sure as hell doesn't need to follow in those footsteps. His physique may not have fit your taste, but he was bigger and in better shape than anyone else who has played Superman, with the exception being that mongoloid Mike O'Hearn. Then again, as far as I'm concerned, he doesn't even count. I'm curious as to the rep scheme and what kind of lifting schedule Routh was on.

Well, the way I see it --> There's only one scene in the whole movie where Routh looks atleast a bit like Superman and that's the accosted one on the roof.

Otherwise, especially when he's walking towards the bullets, he looks more like a giant sausage. Don't know how else to describe it.
Despite the fact that he's big and lean there's nothing impressing on him.

I don't have a problem to write it over an over again: If the audience can take Clark with glasses without further explanation they can handle a bulky Clark/Superman like George Reeves, for example. :supes:

I dont want him all roided out like in the comics, but he should put a little bit more muscle mass on for the next film.

ok, I agree with the first post to a degree. But it's a complicated matter.

the complication is Clark Kent vs. Superman. A big guy in a suit, looks like he's fat. A big guy will look good in the tights, but will not look good in a suit. Conversely, a guy that fits into a suit well, will more than likely look pretty damn skinny in spandex (whatever).

I think that the use of the muscle suit is a fair approach to superman. It allows the actor to play Clark, and look like Clark should, while also allowing Superman to look as he should.

Of all the superheroes out there, using a muscle suit for Supes is the most logical approach for the above mentioned reasons. Even though there is this concept of suspension of disbelief, it is really the best way to sell the duo personalities that superman has.

I actually don't like Superman being really bulky. I mean, with his strength, he couldn't have had any weights that would have given him that much streign that weren't far to large and unweildy to practically train with unnoticed.

I thought he looked fine in the first film. Superman doesnt need to be all muscled out IMO.

It's all in the cut of the suit...if it is well made/cut, then unless teh guy is 300lbs he'll look trimmer.

not trim enough. Above a certain size, it becomes more and more difficult. Sandy Collera's Supermanvs.Batman short really showed this well. He got a huge guy to play supes, but put him in the clark costume, and he looks silly.

This is not 'The Incredible Hulk', he looked fine.
Clark tries to blend in with humanity.
If you have him looking like junior Mr. Olympia, there's no way you can have him blending in with a suit and tie......not unless you have the entire cast buffed out (including extras)

I'm just thinking of guys like Thomas Jane or any number of buff college football recievers, QB's and DB's...they look massive shirtless, but throw a suit on them and they look good.

Routh need not be huge...but a little bigger than he was would help

79, when you put it that way, I totally agree.
I think when you look at the three principal writers for SR, you can see that they're almost slight in their own personal builds.
So perhaps rather than an out-from -a comic book physique, we were treated to their ideal for Superman. Don't forget Singer has admitted that he never read the comics.

Bingo. Besides, every time I think of Mike O'Hearn wearing the suit, I gets the brain pain.
