The Amazing Spider-Man Sally Field in early talks for the role of Aunt May

Excuse me... but I'm not joking. Seriously. I have never presented any of my arguments here as a joke, but in exactly the same way as I would make any other suggestions in any of the other forums on this site. I've given credible candidates for Aunt May who are in their late 30s up to even 50s, and I've given solid reasons for why she should be younger. The only reason you might think it is a joke is because other posters here don't hold the same opinion and would mock my suggestion, and when viewed in the light of their absurb sugggestions it could also seem like one. I've never suggested, for example, someone like Megan Fox.

I find it ridiculous that I can't even make a casting suggestion (backed up by arguments, and without even having been rude or attacking anyone) without it now being taken as trolling or as a joke, and for people to call for my banning. Exactly what have I done wrong here? Isn't Justin Hammer meant to be an old man in the comics, or the Kingpin white? Imagine if I had suggested Sam Rockwell for Hammer or Michael Clark Duncan for Kingpin before they were actually cast. We'd have the whole board up in arms with people suggesting that this is joke casting. I have given my very valid reasons for having a younger Aunt May, presented in a completely reasonable way. If you check every where else on these boards in the other forums, I make just as valid and intelligent suggestions and observations - it just happens that in this case, people don't like this radical suggestion. Is there any difference in the way I've conducted myself here and in those other forums?

There is no joke. Don't even take this post as a joke. I am completely Yeahserious about the casting. Should we now not be able to freely express ourselves on these forums? The next time the majority don't like someone else's suggestion, am I to take it that they should also call for that person's banning and labelling the suggestion as trolling?

You can post your opinion. But we can all also post our opinions too, and my opinion is that this is a stupid "idea". It may be your opinion, but your opinion is stupid. I can still say that. I can still say my opinion.

This joke has to end. I'm sorry. As serious as you probably are. I can't ever take this seriously because this "idea" is too ridiculous and stupid to believe. You can debate how much it isn't stupid, but consensus is its a stupid "idea".

You're trolling because you keep shoving this idiotic, incomprehensible idea down our throats and you get the same responses each time. Give it up man! No one wants a young, supermodel as Aunt May. You're only making yourself look more and more idiotic and incompetent each time. You're only screwing yourself over from being taken seriously.

I think Peter's parents should be secretly hiding out in Minnesota running a hot dog stand.

Well...Splashpage is reporting Sally Field accepted...

It's been a busy few weeks on the untitled "Spider-Man" reboot, and not just on the filming side. Casting news has been pouring in at a rapid rate recently, with Irrfan Khan recently cast as Proto-Goblin and Martin Sheen and Sally Field coming aboard as Uncle Ben and Aunt May. British actor Andrew Garfield was cast as Spider-Man over the summer while Rhys Ifans was tapped for the film's currently unnamed nemesis back in October.

Sweet if true. They are almost set to start filming so if Sally said no, they'd be screwed. If she had any hesitations, they must have worked pretty darn hard to convince her.

Not a bad choice but I just can't imagine her being better than our sweet Rosebud Harris :(

Nothing against Rosemary, but this would be a major upgrade IMO. Great actress! I just hope this means the storyline/character is worthy of the actress choice. I hope they write Aunt May's character, and heck, even Uncle Ben's character a little more complex that what we got in Raimi's verse.

No. Frozen bananas stand.

Absolutely. There's a problem with parental figures recently. Raimi's Ben and May and Nolan's Thomas and Martha were portrayed as ridiculously one-dimentional kind-hearted never-angry people. It's okay to be kind, but those people wouldn't get upset even if they - literally - got shot.

Sally Field is perfect casting. she's great in that brother and sisters show, when ever I manage to watch it....by chance.

one dimensional?
there are two scenes that I love with aunt may.

1) when she gives peter money for his birthday and gets angry when pete refuses it.

2) when she gets up in a huff when peter confesses to not catching the man who killed uncle ben.

sometimes it seems performances just wash over people.

Easily. Especially if they go a different route with her character.

When the performances are bland, it happens

I know this... I was just making a jokey reference to Citizen Kane. My jokes are too complex for you people:o

So Aunt May is going to be mean in this one?

I thought Rosemary was great in Spider-Man 2. She got to show some range, between the aforementioned scenes of giving Peter the $20 on his birthday and then breaking down crying, the confession scene, losing her home, getting taken hostage by Ock, and I love the scene where she and Peter make peace in the backyard after the confession scene.

I think the only duff performance Rosemary put in was when Goblin attacked her. The "Deliver us from eeeeeeeeeeevil" and "Those eyes, those horrible yellow eyes!!!" stuff was really over the top and cheesy.

They never did the best job with her In the rami films. She should never knew Peter failed to get the guy who killed Ben.Hopefully they won't repeat that In reboot.I also would like to In reboot her mothering of peter and Peter taking pictures to help Aunt May
pay the rent. The SSM Animated series did a good potrayal of Aunt May,and hopefully
they looked at that as well as Ultimate Spider-Man.

So Aunt May is going to be mean in this one?

Yeah....more like the real Aunt May from the comics....you know, the tough one who used to slap Peter around, lock him in the closet without supper, and never encourage him to do anything....not this mamby pamby crap made for the movies where she is a kind, gentle, loving, frail.

I have already said in several posts that I think the scene with Aunt May giving Peter the $20 for her Birthday, and the hurt/shame she feels is one of the best in the whole trilogy. But, that is not saying that scene made Aunt May more than a one dimensional character, or that her storyline/character development was not lacking.

She seems one dimensional to a lot of us, as she seemed to exist only to give the inspirational speech to Peter, or to show how difficult she had it (financially).

What made that scene ($20 bill) so good, was we got to see a little of the character, as opposed to always giving speeches, or simply existing to show how financially strapped she was/is.

I want to feel her pain, at the loss of Ben. That moment ($20) came the closest to feeling that for me. It simply made me want more, and realize how "one trick" her character had became in Raimi's verse.

With an actress of Field's caliber, I hope we get better (writing and character development).

Who said mean? Sheesh.. Can you ever stay on point in a discussion without taking it out to left field?? Upset, or showing anger, is NOT the same as being mean. As in the $20 scene, you cannot even begin to think she was being mean, in showing her being upset or hurt at the predicament life had placed her in with the death of Ben.

I hope we get a Aunt May who is NOT Spidey's biggest fan. But I doubt it, since that is more a characteristic of ASM than Ultimate (as far as my limited knowledge of Ultimate takes me :cwink:), and it appears they are following Ultimate with a slightly younger May.

We always see idealized versions of Bruce's parents whenever there is a flashback. This is especially true with Nolan at the helm, who directed Memento.

What does Memento have to do with idealized versions of Bruce Wayne's parents?

What does Aunt May have to do with Carnage?

EVERYTHING
