Scream 5 in Development

Too excited for this. Ghostface will rise again.

I hope it's a meta reference to how re-quels now just go by their original titles. If there is no self awareness to this then we have problems.

I vaguely remember seeing something about how this potentially won’t be a deconstruction/meta film like the previous entries which I hope is false. I understand wanting to keep things fresh and make this more accessible to a newer audience, but if there isn’t any references to poking fun at the current state of the horror genre or past tropes, then this isn’t a Scream movie.

I don't recall hearing that. Where was this rumored?

Uh...

That just turns it into any other horror movie and makes it less unique. Now we're just gonna get a more straightforward horror movie with these characters? Aside from the fact it makes it Scream, you can keep doing the meta deconstruction because movies and horror is always changing as long as it's well executed. Sounds like Williamson is just rationalizing.

This.

Specifically his quote about it being done to death. There's always more than a few ways to do it that's completely fresh, it just takes some creativity. And as if playing it straight is some new idea? lol

I think there's close 0 chance of that truly being the case. The meta aspect of Scream is already baked-in no matter what you do with it. Especially if this film is going to play with revisiting the first film in some way...well, all of this started because of a guy who was obsessed with horror movies (and technically also because of a woman with a tragic Hollywood past). I also am pretty sure that there was a Stab shirt spotted on set too.

But I wouldn't be opposed to pulling back the hyper-meta aspect of Scream 4 (which I still like) back a bit in the name of trying to make something a bit scarier again. There's a fine line there where you can start falling too much into parody or self-parody.

You have to remember, the original point of Scream wasn't simply to comment on the genre. It was to put the audience off-balance because the movie was telling you that it knows the cliches you're expecting, while proceeding to still conform to every single one of them. It adds humor but it also adds tension. I've always said that Scream is more of a celebration of horror than a mockery of it to my horror-loving friends who don't like the series.

I think Williamson's point is he didn't want it to feel too try-hard with the meta aspect. Personally I believe as long as the intent was to do something true to the spirit of Wes Craven and his vision of the franchise, it's going to be fine.

Hey, I'm still excited for this. But what you just wrote could be written for any and all resurrected franchises. We've heard it all before. Saying it is one thing, whether it delivers is another.

I completely agree, the proof will be in the pudding. I'm not saying there's no chance it misses, but I just trust that the meta element is pretty much permanently attached to the Scream franchise to the point that you don't have to try too much for it to be present. That's what I meant by "it'll be fine". Meaning I think it will feel enough like a Scream movie. Whether it's a good Scream movie, we'll have to wait and see.

Same… I don’t get why people on the Scream Reddit are complaint about it.

There are subtle differences to the Ghostface mask in each movie. This looks the most like the mask used in Scream 4 (not counting in the opening scene, in which they used a mask with a slightly different shape during reshoots).

I’d say my favorite masks were Scream 2 and Scream 3.

There is an entire section of Scream fandom that is obsessed with identifying and collecting different vintage Ghostface masks from the films, and other Ghostface mask variants. It is a very interesting rabbit hole to go down.

I’m honestly ok if they don’t go meta because I have no confidence they won’t go beyond surface level commentary about how reboots never work. They tried it for Scream 4 and it was played out.

If these two aren’t the last ones standing, I swear to God… I found her very charming in In the Heights, and Jack, well… he doesn’t seem to have inherited any of his uncle’s psychosis. :o
