Thanks in part to to recent attempts at somewhat decent video game movies (Hitman, Max Payne), news of a possible Metal Gear Movie (MGM?) made by the creator himself and April fools jokes about such things in general (IGN's Zelda trailer). I decided to create a thread solely about video game movies in which we discuss and ponder about which games deserve to be turned into a movies, what they should be like and who should make them

Here are my short-sweet ideas:

1. Metroid: Potential to be turned into a new ALIEN franchise
2. Mass Effect: The next Star Trek/Firefly
3. Bioshock: Already in the works...
4. Legend Of Zelda: Revival of the fantasy genre

DISCUSS

screw that
Max Payne needs a GOOD adaption

Video game movies haven't taken off because the ones that have been released all suck ass.

Killer 7! Someone needs to make a Live Action Killer 7 movie. Rotoscoped Linklater style.

^ But the fact that two serious directors have taken shots at it proves there is gathering interest. Video game movies just need their Spider-Man 1. Also, Killer 7 would be epic!

They haven't taken off because most of the characters aren't developed enough like comic book heroes are. A God of War movie could be great though. I'd simply recommend a CG movie.

The Legend of Zelda series is the only movie I really see deserving of a movie. I hope they do it and it turns out good.

I think that's a lie. We should look at video games more like interactive novels. Many games have good storylines with actual character development. Prince of Persia features no name prince saving a damsel in distress. But Sands Of Time is being made into a big budget movie (with Jordan Mechner's full involvement no less) which means they actual saw something interesting about the characters. The story is different but that happens in POP a lot. We are currently in the third trilogy of games....

I would like to see more VG films. I thought Silent Hill was very good and would like a sequel. Now if only the RE movies were more like the games...

I'd say like everything they are hit and miss, but I atribute this more so to trying to adapt them from the source into something they purely are not (SMB, SF). Lets not forget that video games don't have to transcend into reality, they can still pull off a realistic looking fanatasy environment. Then again, games without a strong or continuous storyline, but rather with a central theme could be better off being re-interpreted.

If I were to choose a few games I'd think could be interesting when translated into film, I'd have to go with:

Armored Core - Could be a great film about the futuristic underworld of gambling or deal with bounty hunting with mecha. Who wouldn't want giant robots tearing **** up nowadays?

Darkstalkers - I don't know about story, but this screams Guillermo del Toro to me.

Metroid - Honestly, out of all the big games in history, I think this is the only one that could be pulled off without bastardizing too much.

Colony Wars - Space exploration/colonization/corruption, great visuals, could be good.

Crash Bandicoot - could probaly be a good CGI comedy ala Shrek/The Incredibles.

As for what is already in the works, MGS I have no problem with aside from the fact that it already essentially is a movie in video game format, but I would alter the story to focus more on the whole Patriots/NWO theme leaving out all the crap from MGS4 that ruined the story for me (nanomachines cause/solve everything?) dealing with the Patriots.

Halo...eh I was never a big fan of the game, think it is highly overrated, but storywise it works.

This is like the 4,000th thread on this subject.

Yes but it is a more general discussion than... OMG!! THEY MAKIN!! DEVIL MAY CRY MOBIE!

I think it has to do with studios hiring any old person to make the movie from a video game....you need to get a director who understands the game and ENJOYS it.

complete cosign.
For example I heard the people that played Max Payne didnt even play the game.

Halo-is dead right now.
Fall Out
Zelda-as an epic trilogy
Castlevania-In the works but with Paul WS Anderson...meh.
Metal Gear-Has a producer needs a big name director. I see Hugh Jackman as Snake.
Metroid-awesome dark PG-13 to R Horror/Action mix is what I would want.
Gears of War-Closest to in being made on this list. Needs a good cast. Too many videogame movies have terrible casts and writers.
Mega Man CG movie.
Reboot of Resident Evil with more of a horror feel than an action movie.

Yup! Heard that too...it's crazy. No wonder it bombed.

Like with Raimi or Nolan...they not only knew about the characters, but they did research and infact had a great respect for the character and the universe around it...so much so that they were able to make films that really complimented the heroes. At least in my opinion. :)

More proof...Singer and Superman. In one interview he's quoted as saying he wasn't familiar with Luthercorp. And we all know how well THAT movie turned out.

Max Payne a decent movie? :lmao:

Anyway, I'd love to see a God of War(my fav ps2 game) film as long as it has a strong lead role, stays true to the game, has a director that repects and cares about the character and his universe, and NOT MADE BY FOX!!!

You sure you don't want Brett Rhatner to direct God Of War......I can't even type that without laughing.:woot:

I want Halo, Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid & Gears of War.

Why would the Halo movie production stop? Highest opening day out of anything of all-time doesn't mean s*** to Hollywood or something?

I'm hoping Bioshock gets a respectable adaption. It can be so good. Verbinski, I'll give him a chance. And the writer sounds promising.

The story should be decent since Ken Levine's helping out, but I don't know about Verbrinski...

If he goes back to his Ring days then it can work. The cinematography in that film is what Bioshock needs. Big Daddies shouldn't be CG though.

And who to play Ryan and Jack and Tenanbaum?

Id LOVE to see a Mortal Kombat Movie Re-Boot
What does everyone think of when they Mention MK
BLOOD
There wasnt even any blood in the old MK Movies(I love the 1st one still and the 2nd one is Hilarious)
They should make it dark and mabey have Gueillermo Del Toro could Direct it

I don't know about Jack, he never speaks and we never get a look at him. Daniel Day Lewis or Gary Oldman would make an orgamic Ryan, but they would never sign up for this. For Tenenbaum, I don't know. Maybe Kate Beckinsale with that accent from Van Helsing? I can't cast for ****. Though, Gary Oldman would make an awesome Cohen. Hell, so would Kevin Spacey.

Final Fantasy

And this time, a proper Final Fantasy movie, preferrably based on FF7, 8, or 9.
