Screw Comic Books! What about Video Game Movies?

The movie was in the works, at one point I heard Peter Jackson was attached to it, but last I heard it got scrapped.

But, if they follow the storyline in the first Halo book, and detail how they create the Spartans, train them, and the fall of Reach, ending as they discover Halo, I think that movie would kick all kinds of major arse.

However, the only problem with this idea is that you have to show Master Chief's face. Still, I think it could be great.

I hope Peter Jackson lets this go bc it is never gonna get made with him so busy for the next *checks watch* 8 to 10 years from now. It may be too late to make a Halo movie by then unless Microsoft pumps out more games to keep the fanbase alive (of course with some help from Bungie), I doubt it.

I think the story would be better suited to tell around Master Chief. Not who he is or what he is but what he does. Have the story from the eyes of the soldiers and commanding officer as it follows Master Chief and then while he is in battle show his mastery, his ability to protect mankind. Of course the story should follow him but giving him emotions and dimensions would destroy the story. A cyborg fighting in a war he is dedicated and chosen to take on. The development should be with the villains and the story rather than with the character. Well, that's my point of view. That's kinda how the game plays out. Keep the helmet on and the guns blazing.

Does anyone remember the Jak and Daxter series? I think it could have film potential, especially Jak 2. Though the fanbase has pretty much faded, so it would probably never happen.
Not all of us are gone. :cwink: When the hell are they gonna make more of those games?

I'd like to see "The Witcher" as a decent movie.
It's taken from Andrezej Sapkowski's books wich I haven't read, but supposedly the video game sticks close to the source material. Pretty dam good story for a video game better than the usual crap I come across.

They made some Poilish movie of it but it a few years back but it looks rubbish.

The whole problem with video game adaptaions, as I see it, is pacing. That is why so many view 'Silent Hill' as the best adaptation - it was perfectly paced. Most of these video game adaptations are at a pace that only a crackhead could follow.

I'm going to try watching 'Max Payne' again at home and see if I can follow it better.

Max Payne wasn't that bad although I never played the games. Personally I am just happy that Bioshock is going to the big screen.. I loved playing the game. I do think there are some games ripe for the big screen..

Metroid, Legend of Zelda, the Broken Sword trilogy, Dino Crisis (the 2nd game would be better though), Lylat Wars/Star Fox, Assasins Creed and even though I haven't played it i reckon Legendary (story wise) is begging for the big action treatment.

I think Nintendo should give the rights to a Super Mario movie to Pixar. It would be awesome.

Gears of War II was INCREDIBLY cinematic. That game had entire levels which were built for the silver screen!

Yeah, I really hope Microsoft goes through with that movie & make it good. Atleast TIH good.

Not really, because Hideo Kojima has stated that he would not let MGS fall into the hands of someone else.

Even then, he dropped the ball completely on MGS4. Then again, an MGS movie could benefit from being a fresh start, and because...

If you ask me, to make a Metal Gear Solid movie that is good, stays faithful to the games, and easy for everybody to understand is damn near impossible.

...it doesn't need to be. As long as its an adaptation that stays true to the themes and atmosphere of the first 3 games, then it'll be good. They don't need to be 100% faithful to the events of Shadow Moses, they just need to make it equally reputable.

Max Payne was a disappointment for me as most video game adaptations have been. Overall, I still think the Resident Evil series has been the best but that could be simply because I like watching Milla Jovovich.

I am looking forward to this one:

I played the game not long ago and it should adapt very well to the big screen. Apparently it's going to be made for T.V. mini-series , which is news to me. Based solely on the game, I'd recommend checking it out. It's going to be on NBC February 8th and 15th of this year.

Here are some stills(couldn't find a trailer):

And here is the game trailer:

They're actually making a TV show out of this? I don't remember the game being that great.

I'd love to see a Manhunt movie. If John Carpenter got his mojo back he'd be the perfect choice to direct. He could give it one of those really great minimalist synth scores he used to be so good at, as well.

Out of all the games mentioned in the thread, I think that our best chance for a decent video game movie is Wiseman's Gears of War.

He's proven he can do action and storytelling with Die-Hard, and he's proven he can do creature effects with the Underworld films. He's our best bet right now.

IS this Legend Of Zelda trailer real? Because it looks pretty damn real to me:

Havent heard anything about it going into production though let alone being released in april 2009.

That was an april fools joke by IGN and aside from making Ganondorf look like an ape, it's pretty good for what it is and it shows what a Zelda could be like, there's a lot of potential..

Yeah I have just noticed it was a joke, pretty good for an April Fools though!

How about a proper Doom movie..? I didn't check the whole thread so......sorry if it's been mentioned :O

We need Devil May Cry by the Wachowski Brother. Just one epic, stylish movie with amazing special effects, cool stunts, some of the freakiest, coolest monster designs and crazy choerographed fights.

^ classic empty Wachowski material

I liked the game. As I was playing it I thought it would make a good movie. It's not a t.v. show though, rather a two-part mini-series on NBC on February 8th and 15th I believe.

The problem with video game movies, is that for the most part, the backstories of video games are kind of watered down. And by the time that a hollywood writer fills in the gaps, it almost doesn't seem like the video game that I loved playing before. Tomb Raider was ok, or maybe I was just mesmerized by Angelina's Jolies.
