Season 6, Episode 9 "Battle of the Bastards" Discussion Thread

I think I saw a few Northern Cavalrymen who looked vaguely like they were armored as Stormlords.

The non-canon addition I would have liked to seen added to the show's composition of the armies would have been a few divided houses between the two armies: like maybe Crowfood Umber or ****esbane Umber joining Jon and spitting on Smalljon's decision.

I don't get why they just didn't keep it as the Karstarks and Boltons... the Umbers, IMO, would have never turned on the Starks.

The Karstarks weren't even present lol (well they were, but we didn't really see them, instead it showed Smalljon.) It just as easily could have been Bran sending Osha and Rickon to the Karstarks instead (seeing as how there was no way he would have known about Robb beheading their Lord)...

I think, the Umbers, wildlings, jons crew... vs the Karstarks and Boltons would have been better... especially if it was actually Winter instead of the same weather that was season 1 lol... Not all the houses would have been able to get to the battle because of winter, etc...

I love the episode though and evetrything about it, just nitpicking about the umbers. it still just doesn't make sense... Greatjon got attacked by Greywind, and was the first to call Robb King in the North.... betraying the starks because the bastard who has nothing to do with them (as far as anyone knew) let wildlings in.

I guess Smalljon doesnt like the Starks after what happened in the War of the Five Kings.

So there is debate on whether this is Stannis or Robb Stark.... I say it's Robb since he still had a horse last time we saw him.

:funny:That moment made me laugh.

Still, they're not being thrilled with the Starks, and murdering the family's sole surviving male, and siding with the disgraceful Boltons.

Well they are mad because the Greatjon took their army... Because Robb called his bannermen... So they are basically just turning on the Starks because of their own loyalty to them.. I just don't like or agree with is since 'The North Remembers' is so stressed in certain scenes (and the books)...

They are mad because the Ironborn raided them... but are siding with the people who were at the heart of the red wedding.

smalljon was straight up viking lol... him and tormund .. hell i would have loved to see those 2 just out in the open brawling... or if they dipped out and just drank ale on the side :funny:

Tormund is a crazy bastard.. he's one of the best characters on the show...

lol ****ing picks up jon... "Hey!"

I guess the Umber situation was just the old prejudices against the Wildlings overriding common sense.

well even so, it was the lord commander of the nights watch and a bastard... holding his actions against winterfell and the true starks is just dumb IMO..

Especially since, as far as anyone knows (bran is presumed dead id say) Rickon is the King in the North ( a title the Umbers brought back themselves)...

No one seemed to give a **** the rightful lord of winterfell/king in the north was held hostage.

And before people say 'well the boltons took winterfell' blah blah... hush. Guest rite is sacred... and the red wedding is universally hated by the north besides the boltons... I dont know about the karstarks in the book, but yea thats the only other house that would seemingly be OK with what happened and how the north was taken...

This show dropped the ball on all that. But then maybe it's meant to show that the North really isn't all that great.

It would have been quite different if Smalljohn had stabbed Ramsay in the back like many thought he would.

Could it also have been that they (in the show exclusively, of course) came to view the War of Five Kings like we do the Iraqi War? A colossal mistake on Robb's part?

I don't buy that either... the entire North was pissed about Ned and wanted to (at first) go save him.. then avenge him. Especially since it was spread that Joffrey wasn't even a trueborn.

Especially when they simply haven't been mentioned since Greatjon in season 2... its like they got confused with Karstark and Umber :lmao:

I would have had Smalljon stab Ramsay in the back just as he let Rickon go. The North remembers. The chaos ensues.

Smalljon being the one to kill Ramsay doesn't work for me at all.

I had a small hope (that i knew wouldnt happen) that the Umbers would have taken out all those archers to cause a bit of trouble for Ramsay but not much... I didn't think the umbers would have so many men so they would still be ****ed until Littlefinger shows up.

I got the sense that a third of the army was Umbers. A third Karstark, and the rest Boltons.

**** i got the sense it was 50/50 umbers and boltons... and the karstarks consisted of maybe 3 people :funny:

That would have been insanity. The Umbers mixed in with the Bolton lines turning on each other before Jon's line even advances. I imagine Tormund would have made some funny remark if he saw some **** like that go down.

Or have Jon charging on foot like in the show and Ramsay orders Smalljon to take his knights on horse and run down Jon and they take off charging towards Jon and just as they are about on him they split for him and Smalljon gallops up to Jon looks down and says, "The North Remembers." And smiles and him and his men turn and charge at Ramsay's lines and Jon orders his men to charge and then all hell breaks loose.

Smalljon joining jon and saying the north remembers would have been pretty goddamn cool.

they said 'red wedding' a good 10 times the last 2 episodes but we didn't get a north remembers moment at all lol

hey, we still got the finale...

There sits the only king I mean to bend my knee to.

I like that.

I mean, overall I really enjoyed this episode. But I hated that Rickon died like that. I felt the Starks should finally have gotten a break.

Rickon came back for 2 episodes.. and zero dialogue... lol they just really tossed him out the door ... to the point where i don't understand the GA being 'upset' about his death... no no , i get why it sucked... just like it's more of a 'well who didn't see that coming' thing, as was much of this episode.

I would have actually preferred something like

1. ramsay actually does just slit his throat with that knife instead of some game, where Ramsay is Robin Hood on steroids. Then Jon and co charge.... but then we wouldn't have gotten that truly amazing shot of Jon standing alone against an army running at him.

2. He really does get flayed, put on the X and lit on fire.

also, someone mentioned it the other day... Ramsays cloak... would have been really great if he really was wearing Shaggydog.

The thing that really infuriates me is that D&D let Ramsay kill Wun Wun. The last ****ing giant in the whole ****ing world and Ramsay gets to shoot him in the eye with a ****ing arrow.

Ramsay's character did not deserve to be the one that killed Wun Wun Last of the Giants. They had already given him Sansa, Shaggydog, Theon's nethers, Rickon, Roose, Fat Walda, a baby, and ****ing Winterfell, but oh no thats not enough! They had to give him Wun Wun too. **** you, D&D! **** you, both!
