If you read his tweets a recent one said that he has 'never ever ever ever (says ever about 100 times in numerous tweets) seen teenage emotions portrayed as well as in Fault of our stars. And the rumor is that he purposely had ASM3 pushed back a year in order to accommodate Shailene's schedule. So perhaps they believe she will save the franchise?

I don't think so. I know that he was originally set to direct The Spectacular Now, another film starring Shailene.

I don't believe that Sony would push back TASM3 to accommodate one actor. Changing the reserved date of the film is a major deal and I doubt that Webb has that much leverage. If the rumors are true, it's probably because they want more time to plan and rethink things after TASM2's underwhelming performance.

As for the whole Woodley mess, time will tell. I still have to check out The Fault in our Stars.
