Well we should be seeing her father at least and assuming both of the parents. There were rumors of Brian Haley playing the father, and he confirmed it himself on Twitter.

As far as her backstory, I'm going to say it will still be a bit dysfunctional. I don't think you can do MJ w/o having the crazy father and whatnot. It's a part of her origin.

I wasn't trying to be confrontational and apologize if it seemed like I was; there IS a difference, though, between a cameo and a 'limited role'.

BTW, sometimes actors can have a 'limited role' in a movie but go uncredited, which leads general audiences to consider it an 'extended cameo', which might be the case with Famke Janssen in The Wolverine.

Also, just as an FYI, here's the definition of what a cameo appearance is:

a brief appearance or voice part of a known person in a work of the performing arts, typically unnamed or appearing as him- or herself. These roles are generally small, many of them non-speaking ones, and are commonly either appearances in a work in which they hold some special significance (such as actors from an original movie appearing in its remake), or renowned people making uncredited appearances. Short appearances by celebrities, film directors, politicians, athletes or musicians are common. A crew member of the show or movie playing a minor role can be referred to as a cameo as well.

I've been lurking around this thread for a while but haven't posted because I didn't want to get embroiled in the whole "Shailene's ankles are too fat to portray Mary Jane" argument. Anyway, it seems to have died down. A bit.

I'm looking forward to seeing what she brings to the role. She has a really unique look and I find her fascinating to watch. I think that's why she'll make an awesome MJ. She just has "it".

Yeah I've said before that it's be boring to see Gwen and MJ be the same girl, wouldn't it?
