It's not like there is a 'right' choice for who should play MJ.

But if there's no 'right' choice, how can there be a 'wrong' one? Choosing a talented young actress who's going to star in a huge franchise soon and who'll probably become the next 'it' girl in Hollywood looks like a pretty fine choice to me. I mean, Chris Cooper is too old for Norman Osborn (and clearly not sleek enough), and yet I've never seen anyone complain about him not looking the part. Why? Beacuse he's a great actor who'll bring what's necessary to the part. The same with Shai.

Because people like to make objective arguments until they get logically dismantled, at which point they say "Oh its all subjective anyways, this is just my opinion" and become like radical postmodern relativist philosophers.

Opinions don't come from thin air. People tend to have reasons for their preferences. And those reasons can be shattered by argumentation, thus causing people to change their opinions (which happens all the time). Some people, however, can't let go of said opinion, and seem to think that the simple fact that it is an opinion is sufficient enough to make it a good opinion.

Yeah she's a cutie. Not a drop dead gorgeous sexy bombshell, but a cute pretty somewhat innocent but bad side to her type of chick.

IMO I think they will forgo the sexy model type MJ and Shailene will be a bad girl super curious very opinionated MJ. From everything I have seen her in she does this very well.

She will probably have the troubled family life like in Raimi's flicks and will have a mouth to back up her tough exterior. This will probably be what draws Peter to her.

Can someone explain to me how warner brothers managed to pass superman as a average size , skinny shrimp in their tv shows/movies all these years, with no real backlash?

It's funny because superman's body type means more to his characters appearance and lore than mary jane watson's.

Saying Woodley isn't my choice for Mary Jane based solely on looks isn't really an argument. It's just a preference.
It's not like there is a 'right' choice for who should play MJ. I don't like the choice, and I don't feel like they're creating my ideal Spider-man movie which upsets me. I think Jessica Alba is incredibly attractive, but she didn't look like Sue storm. The fake looking blue contacts didn't improve it either. It's not because I subcribe to a societally enforced standard of beauty, if anything I think the casting of Woodley may be perpetuating one.

You are in fact making MJ out to be an object, a thing of looks, everything else is secondary. If that's true then hell, I'm glad Webb made this decision, he might make MJ, you know, actually interesting. This MJ isn't even on the path to becoming an actress/model because she's still living with her father and attending a public high school. Why can't people get that through there heads, it even contradicts the supposed "cliche" of a wannabe actress being a waitress, which the thing is MJ isn't a wanna be actress, at least not yet. She's a teenager who hasn't been handed full control of her life yet.

Are you kidding? I never made an 'objective argument' about anything. If you want to wax intellectual you should learn to discern the difference between an argument, and an opinion.
I don't think that god himself ****ing disagrees with this decision and that the inherant laws of nature nessesitate a different actress whether all humans agree or not. I just dont like the choice, sorry that disturbs some of you so much.

No wonder the quality of movies is declining, you all line up and applaud like circus seals over every mediocre decision made, and then actually swarm the people who dare to question the descision. What makes the studio so perfect? They're just people like us and I'm confident many of the people here could produce smarter superhero stories than some of the garbage that's been put out.

That's actually a valid point. I didn't think they'd still be in highschool by this time, and I assumed they'd all be a minimum of 18. She might be a great descision in the context of the film. It's just that I had expectations for this film (and the previous) being a fan of the source material.

My one and only point is that had I made the descision myself, I would not have chose Woodley, due to my own perception of the character she is playing. I never said that this is cause for you all to disagree with the descision... Am I crazy or this very basic stuff guys?

She'd be good for a flash back or something, but considering that she will now most likely be the permanent MJ actress throughout all of Webbs movies, I'm disappointed.

If you're thrilled with the descision that's great. I envy you.

Honestly I might end up loving Woodley in the movie, my frustration stems from a desire to preserve the Spider-man world as I saw it when I was a child.

I don't even know how to spell it to you that whatever dream version of MJ you have, no real person would ever look like her? That if the movie is set in high school, no supermodel ever could be a student there? That Webb and co picked a young actress whose acting abilities were nothing but praised since she got to the big screen? Technically Shai is everything MJ should be both appearance-wise and acting-wise. It seems to me that her only vice is not being afraid of going out without makeup, beacuse god forbid some nerds on the internet think she's not hot enough. Which only makes me like her more, tbh. There are no real reasons to think Shai will be a bad MJ except for potentially bad screenplay or directing. And both these things are out of her control.
tl;dr: I'm kind of sick of ppl hating her for not being all that for their personal tastes. There is plenty of fanart of MJ to f*p to, not all versions are supposed to be like this.

Parker never met a high school Gwen either. And she never knew he was Spider-Man. Do you have problems with that? Or with Cooper's age? Or with absence of Betty Brant, Peter's actual first love? Disliking the general setting of the movies is one thing, but your whole point started as "Shailene looks like a horrible Mary Jane". If you don't feel she is attractive, that's a problem of your view and nothing else, because a) she is, b) her casting wasn't decided by her appearance only.

I think SHailene fits the role of a 15 yr old or teen ager. However, they still could have cast an actress a little sexier or mature looking.

Truth be told I don't really care. TASM1 wasn't all that good and did little if anything for the Spiderman cinematic universe IMO. Yeah sure there were times where he moved more like a spider/bug I guess, but for the most part I found this spiderman to be a precocious arrogant jerk, and the story was meh IMO. Definitely should have waited for rental.

And complaining how your expectations of a super sexy high school girl were not met is not pathetic at all, right? Please. It's a good thing that actual people do look like you imagine MJ, but if they were hired, there would be some other fellow complaining how they don't meet his expectations and how horrible they are at acting.
You did say that Shailene looks like a terrible MJ, when you haven't even seen her as MJ. Forgive me for being tired of this.

Yeah, you said "I wanted Mj to be a smoking hot woman" and then it turned nasty, because it violently clashed with the reality of TASM2 being set in high school.
I'm humbly encouraging ppl to do some research before they post. Because Webb's spideyverse is not the perfect one for me either, and in my perfect one I would like to see a more mature version of MJ too, because I'm a sucker for her early 616... well, everything. BUT this is the version they're going with and it's fine too. I like it well enough, and within it the choice of Shai is completely understandable to me. I've grown to really like her and the hate is growing old.
