The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Shailene Woodley IS Mary Jane Watson! - Part 1

It's going to be fun watching everyone complaining now to either shut up or pretend like they always liked the casting when the movie comes out and they actually see Shailene as MJ...or even when the first piece of promotional art with her on it comes out.

Ah well it's part of being a fanboy you know. We'll never get along anyway. I usually laugh and get annoyed when fans blow everything out of proportion but for once I'm gonna keep my cool and just enjoy the show. ;)

My two cents, Woodley is very pretty but she doesn't look like I imagine Mary Jane, for that matter I didn't like Dunst either. When I see Mary Jane I should be be like "wow!" and can't stop giggling she is so gorgeous. Even before set pics I didn't see that with Woodley. The Set pics aren't flattering but you can tell she wasn't ready nor even the slightest bit dolled up. So this constant nagging I see online is a bit unfair to the girl. I hope her performance is amazing though, I want a well acted MJ just as much as having the look down.

god some of you are just plain ******ed. i understand if it is your opinion that SW is unattractive, and you reserve judgement on her take as MJ until you see more pics or the movie or whatever, but come on! some of the things ive read about this poor girl on here, are atrocious!

i have always embraced my nerdness and love of all things comic book related, and have always tried to elighten average people about how cool comic books and the like can actually be; but it is immature, fickle, insanely-opinionated fanboys (like some on here) that give the rest of us a bad name!

by no means is SW hideous, and to say things like that is low. like i said, its ok to have an opinion, but to drag someone thru the mud for a few set pics is about as stupid as it gets!

That was written by a woman and feminist. They seem to be taking out their insecurities on this issue.

Even with the full makeup photos just posted on the mainpage, I'm not feeling this. Visually not a good fit for MJ. Cute in a little sister way but meh.

This was also my reaction upon seeing the photos of her in makeup and costume, she doesn't look fetching the way MJ should.

But curiously, she looks much better in the pics with the fans, with more eyeliner or something. Weird. Could it be that they're giving her more of a earthy natural makeup look in the movie (bad choice) and she put on more makeup after shooting wrapped for the day?

mary jane should just be at least on par with looks as Gwen .. and i think so far, gwen looks better

After seeing the more recent set photos, Woodley looks ok. Pretty cute. She would be far from my first pick for MJ on a looks-alone basis, though. Let's hope her acting is out of this world.

To be honest I don't really find shailene all that attractive myself but its not a deal breaker for me. I'm not that into Emma either so the looks of an actress isn't that important to me. I would have preferred a smoking hot MJ this time around but characters are open to different interpretations.

CinemaBlend made my point for me with that article, but I want to piggyback on it anyway:
NO-ONE should be dismissing Woodley as MJ because she's not the ' super-hot model chick' from the mainstream comics because, as I pointed out, that MJ has not actually been adapted that often in non-literature media. A person on another board posted a couple other examples besides the one I cited, but 616 MJ is not and should not be the 'benchmark' when it comes to adaptations of the character.

Now when I think about, we already had the "model" MJ in the old movies. Dunst's MJ had aspirations to be on Broadway in the first movie and then in the second, became an actress and a model. Or did you forget all the billboards Peter always stumbled upon in SM2. That version was close to the 616 version, disregarding what people think of Dunst's looks or acting. I, as a fan, do not want to see that version of the character in live-action again. We saw MJ as a model and actress already, why would we see that again.

We didn't get the 616 MJ in the last film trilogy. The Raimi MJ might've been an actress and model occupation-wise, but she wasn't the 'drop-dead gorgeous' bombshell character in personality or looks.

Dunst wast even close imo

That's why I said "disregarding of what people think about Dunst's looks or acting". It doesn't matter how Dunst portrayed the character or whether or not she had what it takes to be cast for that version of MJ, that role WAS based on the 616 version for the most part. The Woodley version is not.

Agrees completely. She also wasn't very confident and was very insecure

I bet if they casted someone who actually looks like 616 MJ of Silver Age, people would call her fat. I've been reading SM from the very beginning some time ago, and, well, it seems that the standard of ultimate hotness used to be pretty different. That's why I wanted Jennifer Lawrence for the part, appearance-wise. But I'm glad we got Shai, she's a firework and incredibly pretty. That eyes! Can't wait to see her on big screen.

Plus, MJ's only a cameo in SM2, and by the time they start shooting SM3 Shai'll be two years older, 120% hotter, a fairly popular YA movie actress and a leading lady of the spideyverse. They'll make her look perfect, as they did with Gwen.

To be fair... They've never once said what version of mj we are getting.

Amz was a great mix of 616,ultimate, and spectacular. I suspect the same in its sequel

Personality-and-looks- wise, the Raimi MJ was the damaged girl-next-door and was actually more like the Ultimate version of Gwen Stacy than the 616 MJ, although there are also elements of the Ultimate version of MJ in the character.

Please. it was clear what it was based on. Not 100%, but MJ was supposed to be like the original version for the most part. Sam Raimi decided to exclude the seemingly superficial MJ plot because he thought the audience would find her unlikable if she was portrayed that way. That's why he went with "The girl next door that Peter loved since he was a kid" angle.

Ultimate Gwen was hiding her insecurities behind her punk-rock demeanor. She even pulled a knife on Flash once lol. MJ was a pretty open character in the Raimi trilogy.

I'm not even liking the look of Garfield in the pics... I don't know, I just don't think I've settled into this reboot at all.

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy is the only thing I've actually LOVED about the whole thing.

Im talking about Amz 2. ...

The raimi films were a mix of 616, ultimate, and gwen stacy ..... Which is why she earned the nick name on here "gwen-j"

^ MJ was NOT the drop-dead gorgeous bombshell in the Raimi films. She was a popular girl who was damaged by her tumultuous relationship with her father, whom Peter idolized, and who had dreams and aspirations of being a model and actress and was driven enough to make those dreams a reality.
