Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel!

Not so much, since the Predator on the poster featured in Predators, and the official Facebook page is referencing every solo Predator movie. But I suspect it takes place on Earth, which would make it hard to reference beyond "Hey man, whatever happened to Royce?"

Ah well, as long as they at least reference it.

Do they really need to? No one would know that that soldiers who go MIA, are being abducted to be prey on an alien planet. Predators happened, but just because they might not mention it, doesn't mean they are ignoring it. It just means it's not relevant to the plot of the current Movie.

A mention about military personnel going missing without a trace would be enough for me in all fairness.

Yeah, I don't mind a throwaway line like when Isabelle mentioned Dutch in Predators. That's really all that's needed since it's not like they would know anymore info than that.

 yep, just a reference will do.

I kind of also want them to throw in a quick reference to the second film as well. Maybe mention of "weird murders in LA years ago" or a "crazy ex-cop telling stories," or something along those lines.

Yep, I want the first 3 at least referenced, just for continuity sake.

Depending on what they're doing, I'd love Easter eggs to the previous ones.

If there's a mention, nice. If not, I won't be the slightest bit bothered by it. Predator is one of the few franchises where every single Movie can stand alone, without referencing any of its previous Movies, in order to establish some continuity.

True. And as has been mentioned numerous times on this and other Predator threads by myself and others, a new Predator movie doesn't necessarily have to take place in current or future times. They could do a prequel that could be every bit as compelling and entertaining as any sequel.

A Predator in the Wild West hunting cowboys and Apache Indians. A Predator in ancient Greece hunting Spartan soldiers. A Predator in feudal Japan hunting Samurai & Ninja. A Predator in ancient Scandinavia hunting vikings (which could be the origin of the story of Beowulf & Grendel). A Predator in medieval Europe hunting armored knights. Not to mention all of the wars which have been fought over the centuries (The War of Independence, The American Civil War, WWI, WWII, The Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, just to name a few).

It has been established in the movies, especially Predator 2 & Predators, that they have been hunting humans on Earth for centuries. So tying themselves down to ONLY stories that take place in modern/futuristic times is silly IMO.

With Black I am just not sure if he won't pull a TFA and double down on familiar elements. Which could still be a great flick, but leaves the possibility of injecting different elements like doing far in the past or far in the future settings in doubt, at least to me.

Well, normally I'd have that concern for the movie, but Predators already did that (Not to the extent of TFA mind you). Plus. his MCU movie was taking a piss on MCU tropes, so I doubt I should be worried about Black.

If anything Black will recycle his own tropes. The lead will be some kind of washed up Rambo, with the Predator serving as a kind of dark reflection of him and defeating the Predator will be a form of redemption for him.

And as someone who LOVED TFA, I flat-out wouldn't care. It's a formula that works, and it was always a simple premise.

Like I said, I think a gloss on the first film more or less, executed well, would still be a fun film. I just think that it would lessen possibility of the introduction of some new and different elements in my estimation.

Yeah, BUT... it has already been done! It was called Predators and was produced by Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal. And I thought it was a fun film. But now they have to deliver something fresh, otherwise I don't see the point...

Yeah Predators already did the whole 'rehash with a twist'.

Shane Black's early reluctance to accept the job.

They called me and I was reluctant. I said, “Look. You guys at Fox, I mean, I enjoy these movies, but we’ve been churning out these AVP whatever, they each cost a certain amount of money, they’re okay, but there’s no effort to elevate them or make them any kind of an event.” They’re just sort of another Predator. “Oh, there’s another one that came out.” They said, “What if we said to you we want to reinvent this, and really treat it with as much of an event status, or as much hoopla as we would the Alien prequel, which is coming out also? We really want to make this something. The kind of movie that people line up for.” I said, “Really, you’ll spend a bunch of money?” They go, “Yep.” I go, “Make it really scale, spectacle?” “Yep.” “****, that sounds interesting.”

How the scope of the movie will compare to some of his other movies.

think the first one was great, and it was contained, and it was a perfect little gem for what it was. I think there’s an expansion that needs to take place, and also just a love for that era, that movie, and the mythology of the Predator. I think that they came to me knowing pretty much that… they said, basically, if I wanted to make Predator but treat it like it was Iron Man III instead of just another little movie. I said, “Let’s really do it right this time.”

So with Shane black at the helm I'm betting the predator turns out to be a scouser with a drug problem and the real big bad will be the boring business man screaming I AM THE PREDATOR while waving a gun around

Good stuff. Like I mentioned in the Doc Savage thread, Black said he wants to do DS next year, I wonder what that means for the Predator production schedule? I thought that since it doesn't come out til March 2018 that it won't film til next year, but perhaps they film it this year (the script is done after all), get it done and dusted early and then move on Doc Savage sometime next year....?

You're the first person to think of that joke since this was announced years ago.:o

And I really don't care either :woot:

Wow that's an original joke. You do know he was involved with the original Predator right?

That just reminded me of why I dislike him as a director. Totally ruined Iron Man 3 for me, and I even watched it again with commentary to see where he was coming from. Him and his friend just come across so unlikable to me and pretty much confirmed that "twist" was done just for the sake of doing it.

With that said, while I'm always on board for more Predator movies, I just can't get too excited until I see something, whereas just news alone would be enough for me to do backflips.

I'm not sure I'd care about event type Predator Movies. I also hate the comparison to Iron Man 3. As that is my least favorite Iron Man Movie, and not just because of the twist. Just give me contained Movies with interesting time periods.

He meant in terms of scope. Because that's the biggest movie he's ever done. So basically he's saying Fox will treat this the same way they're treating Ridley Scot''s 'Alien' franchise.
