Yea but it's pretty clear they cheaped out on Wolverine. They just wanted to make a blockbuster on the cheap. I mean, look at all the promo posters and pictures, looked like they were made by 5 year olds who just started using Photoshop :hehe:
I remember being blown away by the first trailer and everything. Everything started going straight downhill when those onesheets started coming out. Looking cheap as heck and completely uninspired. I gave the teaser sheet a "pass" since it was a teaser, but even the final one sheet was the exact same freaking poster. I was looking for something iconic and gritty, Not a rehash of the X3 poster but with Logan's face squeezed in there. :cmad: Was there really not that much creativity around during production? :down

The theater count is starting drop over here. In fact, my local cineplex is having it's last showings of Wolverine tomorrow. After two months and with The Proposal, State Of Play and Transformers (next tuesday) this week i'd say it's had good run.

It sounds like it's opened well in India:
A 20th Century Fox film starring Hugh Jackman, the film opened in India on June 19 in English and Hindi and has garnered one of the highest openings among Hollywood films in India, beating films like `Fast and The Furious 4`, `Angels and Demons`, `The Dark Knight`, `Indiana Jones` and `The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull`.

"The film has grossed more than Rs 2 crores in its opening day itself. The first two days have seen theatres running houseful across all regions of the country," says Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios India.
An indian crores is 10 million, so that's 20 million rupees, or around $400,000 on it's opening day. For reference, Fast & Furious made about $3m in total and X3 $943,600 so this looks like being the biggest X-Men film in India by a long way.
More here.

Looks like this wont quite make it to $375 million world wide at the moment.

Fox International’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine took an estimated $1.8m from 14 territories, pushing its international total to $182.9m.

The spin-off opened powerfully in India, ranking top of the local chart with $1.4m from 322 screens. It was Fox’s biggest opening weekend ever in India and the biggest opening for a Hollywood film in the market so far this year.
Screen|Daily
Add in the $177.3m domestic, gives a ww total of $360m. Maybe another $2m domestic (that's what X3 did from this point and Wolverine has slightly better daily figures) and a further $2m from India, so close to $365m before it opens in Japan. Japan should add at least another $10m.

Compare to Star Trek (a brand new film franchise) this movie failed.

Now where did that come from? Are you sore that Wolverine has and will make more that Star Trek worldwide? It's not a pissing match. Wolverine is a success. Star Trek is success.

And Star Trek has been around even longer than Wolverine. It's a new movie, not a new franchise. :cwink:

Not at all, doll. :)

Star Trek has kicked Wolverine's ass so hard where it counts... Domestically.

Internationally, unless it's doing DaVinci Code numbers then it's not much of a consolation. And the point you are using foreign numbers is a weak defense for this film financially.

If wearing blinkers makes you happy, please carry on. International numbers are important and they're not foreign to many of us here.

That was not necessary. Quit the attitude.

No one is "defending" this film. If it makes you feel better that Star Trek did better domestically, then good for you. I enjoyed both movies, so I'm glad they're both doing well. And going by Celestial's detailed analysis of the box office numbers over the past few weeks it appears Wolverine is doing fine.

There's no need for you to be getting so defensive over this.

Agreed. Whether we like the film or not, it had a succesful run against films like Terminator and Star Trek which is pretty impressive.

This movie had such a run of bad luck leading up to its release I was half-expecting the theaters to get swarmed by locusts during the opening weekend. All things considered, it did fine.

Obviously it had some issues, but I really enjoyed it anyway. Looking forward to getting the blu-ray this fall.

And it's still the biggest opening weekend of the year so far - although I think Transformers is going to blow that away next weekend, and probably Harry Potter after that. Looking forward to both of those movies too. :woot:

If this wasnt a Fox movie, it wouldnt bother me....but since it is...it hurts. It f'n hurts me.

Are you sore that Wolverine has and will make more that Star Trek worldwide?

Ummm, actually... it's Star Trek that's made more money worldwide. It has $363.8M to Wolverine's $360.6M currently, but you never know, that could change. Unless you're referring to their international takes, but WW means that plus domestic, hence ST's slight lead currently. WO has done $177.4M domestically & $183.2M internationally, while ST has done $240.8M domestically & $123.0M internationally. Here's the link: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view2=worldwide&yr=2009&p=.htm

Either way, it doesn't matter, as they've both done well. I'll be the first to admit, I'm surprised at how good WO has done. It's international numbers helped considerably, and with Japan still to come in September, it could possibly hit the $200M mark in that respect.

I do, however, believe Trek will remain in the lead and will only increase the margin as time goes on. Here's why, LEGS! ST has some serious legs, check this out: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2009&wknd=25&p=.htm ... It lost 331 theaters, but... actually gained a scant 1% in weekend revenue over the previous weekend. Trek could just maybe see $400M WW if the trend continues.

They'll both be trounced by TF2 & Potter though, everyway you slice it, domestically, internationally, and worldwide. Up will beat Trek for leading pic domestically before then, by the end of this coming weekend probably. Hangover will likely knock Wolvie down a peg by the same time as well, and it may eventually be climbed over by Museum also. WO should finish the year still in the top 10 grossers, with ST staying in the top 5, domestically speaking.

Yes, Star Trek got ahead worldwide over the weekend and I'd missed that/got my sums wrong (What? How could that happen?) Star Trek will increase that margin over the next few weeks with its domestic take and I think it still has to open in India. We've got two unknowns - how long can Star Trek keep going in the US and will Japan like Wolverine? My guess is they'll end up pretty close. You see, I agree with you!

Angels and Demons is at 460 millions already.
Wow, that was fast.

Star Trek will end up with more money, its domestic legs have been amazing and its still holding up now ahead of movies released after it. Wolverine will round out about $370 million which is less than Trek has now.

Not if they kill Predator. :(

Well, I'd suggest you brace yourself. :p It IS Fox after all.

In terms of box office, I think this film has pretty much had its run. I noticed that others were saying that it was running neck and neck with Star Trek a while ago, but that is no longer the case. Star Trek hit the $250M mark domestically yesterday, (I believe Wolverine is around $178M) and it has grossed $376M worldwide to Wolverine's $363M.

I just wonder if this will resonate at all with FOX. Fantastic Four, Daredevil or Elektra failing is one thing considering that they are lesser known characters to the public. But Wolverine is Marvel's most iconic character--second only to Spider-Man. And he's barely outgrossed Fantastic Four.

What is wrong with this picture? And will they finally learn their lesson?
