So, does ANYBODY actually like Ultimatum? ... at all?

Do you actually like Ultimatum?

  • I would rather vomit in a cup and drink it then re-read this mini-series.

  • It's been pretty bad, but I've read worse.

  • I don't care about it either way

  • I actually like it, probably due to missing 65% of my brain mass

I feel that Loeb's recent stuff is not only because of his son dying, but I think the new **** is sooo bad, it's like a car wreck that you just can't keep your eyes off of. You just gotta see how low he's gonna sink next.

That, and I think most of the Ultimatum sales can be attributed to people simply wanting to see how the UU is going to end, and which characters will be slaughtered off next.

I still can't explain why people buy Hulk though. It blows my mind that people can have such terrible taste (unless they buy it to laugh at how bad it is I guess)

Yes, all these characters are all getting massacred, and it usually takes place in 2 or less panels. Loeb is showing these characters no respect! They deserve a fighting chance, and for their death to mean something.

That and the screwy fact that he spares characters earlier on, only to kill them later when keeping them around amounts to absolutely nothing at all. I mean, wasn't Thor staying in the afterlife all so that Valkyrie could live? Well, that lasted all of five minutes before Magneto sliced her open after she did absolutely nothing.

I (the only one who likes this book) was a bit lost with issue 4. Am I supposed to be buying all the other Ultimate books along with this?

I donno KB. I suppose Anubis' reply makes sense... If you want to buy into whatever Marvel wants you to buy. In my mind, Ultimatum should stand on it's own. ESPECIALLY if Loeb is going to be killing off the characters in Ultimatum instead of their OWN titles.

There was so much potential and ongoning storylines for these characters. That's what makes me the most upset. Daredevil and Dr. Strange were barely developed yet. And I don't know why Finch can't maintain the characters looks in the Ultimate Universe. ie, Wasp being Asian, Peter being 16, etc. But then I guess we can blame Madueria for that.

David Finch has no excuse, he knows exactly how the Ultimate characters are supposed to look. He's worked in the Ultimate universe before with Bendis so he definitely knows better. Then again, who knows, Loeb may be dictating to Finch how he wants the characters to look so....

So people really think that was Magneto who lost his arm and not Mystique?

Does it really make Ultimatum any more interesting?

... definitely not.

It's just surprising. It's like if you were being forcefed used coffee grinds that had been on a dirty floor, and then part way in you find that a little piece of really good chocolate had gotten into it somehow. It's still a horrific experience, but with a surprising little touch.

Ha ha. Creative comparison, I got a chuckle.

I wouldn't give a razz-taz about Ultimatum had it's events not crossed over or affected USM. For that reason alone, I wish Loeb dead.

If you want to talk about sales...

the BIG question that is out there..that no one seems to want to talk about , is WHY MARVEL WOULD NOT SERVE US UP A 616-ULTIMATE CROSSOVER before doing this CRAP PILE on the ultimate universe.

Even if MARVEL gives a couple more halfass "U3" clones the interest in that kind of event would be AWESOME.

But with Ultimatum..now it's like who cares?

In their prime..lets say a few months after ultimates 2 a 616 v Ultimate crossover would have generated sales off the charts.

Whats happened with the Ultimate line is perhaps the biggest self destruction in all of comics history.

I have to disagree on the 616/UM crossover appeal. It would be pretty dumb to have them crossover, theres no real excitment in it. Just look at when they crossed over UM with Squadron Supreme.

Another note is that the UM universe became pretty stagnent over the last few years and basically became UM616.

Also vehemently agreed.

I like it. Its funny. This is what the Ultimate line should be. Guilt-free craziness. Its not 616, so they can basically do whatever they want as far as Im concerned.

"Do whatever they want" in respect to books that sell very well..and will have negative sales consequences to the line....not always too smart.

I do WANT to respect bold arcs and storylines..but who was it that stated this series is like some bully coming into your toybox and blowing up all your favorite GI Joes with firecrackers.

Since when is the ULTIMATE line throwaway? Along with Marvel Knights, the ULTIMATE line was a key factor in rebounding from the fall...why would marvel destroy it so?

I dont see the Ultimate line as "my favorite GI Joes." The Ultimate line is basically one long "What if..." comic. If there is anywhere where they can literally do whatever they want its the Ultimate line.

So true man, pretty much ever since Civil War redefined the 616 universe, marvel has tossed the Ultimate line to the curb because they didnt need it anymore. Plus i imagine it must've been weird for marvel to have two popular universes competing with each other within their own company. They had to choose one or the other and obviously they chose the 616.

I'd say marvel tossed the ultimate universe aside long ago (I'd say when Bendis took over UXM, the only Ultimate book of note since has been Ultimates vol.2.) and it basically became the "616 lite" line. Thats why I dig Ultimatum, it goes back to the "anything can happen" feel of the line.

As per the deaths, it's more realistic for people to die out of the blue, not everyone gets a big heroic moment to go out on.

My biggest problem was spiderman's death. Ultimate Spidey was the cornerstone of the Ultimate line. He basically died off panel. Nice job.

I also never considered Ultimate power "basically the same" as a 616 crossover. JMS squadron was the Ultimate version of the Gruenwald team, so in effect it was an ultimate contained book.

Even the "haters" would have picked up a mega ultimate 616 versus Ultimate book...it would have sold boatloads of comics and been a decent crack at a Marvel "crisis". I'm sure many think it's a dumb idea, but if it was written well could be awesome.

Original concepts in comics are overrated, as long as writing , art and production work well.
