So, does ANYBODY actually like Ultimatum? ... at all?

Do you actually like Ultimatum?

  • I would rather vomit in a cup and drink it then re-read this mini-series.

  • It's been pretty bad, but I've read worse.

  • I don't care about it either way

  • I actually like it, probably due to missing 65% of my brain mass

Elaborate

It updated characters like Spider-Man to fit current trends. But at the same time we get high octane fights where the characters are more obnoxious and belligerent to each other. Ultima Cap is a hardcore soldier, Ultima Nick Fury is a militant fascist, and everybody appears to have sex everywhere.

The last fight where Cap and Valkyrie attack Magneto even emulates what I have desired for Ultima Magneto's death. Except I wanted Thor to be the one to destroy Mag's hand. Then Ultima Cap's attack would either kill Magneto or turn him into a quadraplegic, since Cap did promise to break him years ago. If Magneto survived I wanted him to hide his paralysis under a new costume using his powers to simulate movement. He would then act more merciless because of his injuries. It was the fight I had dreamed of for Ultimates and instead came off short. It seems Ultimate violence isn't appealing anymore.

Thanks for elaborating. I agree with you about some of your points but not others.
I especially like (as u did) that cap's an actual soldier who is willing to kill people when necessary, but still has the olden day morals.

I read them for free online (I won't reward Marvel with money for putting out crap like this) ONLY because they've made the entire line dependent on this stupid mini. Honestly, I would've rather they'd let some random newby writer write it. Couldn't have been worse.

So, you're one of those people who pirate comic books? You don't have to reward Marvel with your money if you don't like something but pirating comic books is messed up and one of the reasons the industry has been taking such a hit.

Why pay for something when you can download it online for free and then ***** about it? :whatever:

I'm sure it starts with books you "don't like" and then suddenly you aren't even buying anything, you'll just eventually read everything for free. Good job. Way to go. :whatever:

Just read #5. WTF. Loeb, c'mon man

I just read it too. I really didn't mind half the crap that happened in the universe. The only Ultimate book that I read is Ultimate Spider-Man and that book is not getting affected. Ultimate X-Men has been horrible, to me, since Brian K. Vaughn left the book. Ultimate Fantastic Four has been bad since after the first Bendis/Millar arc, in my opinion. And The Ultimates have been bad since Millar/Hitch stopped doing it. I can see why they did what they did with Ultimatum. I have read much better than this but it was quite a brutal freakin' arc if you enjoyed the Ultimate Universe.

Thankfully I don't really care that much about the Ultimate universe and found some entertainment factor out of this. Though I could have just downloaded it all for free like random_havok and then complained about it even though it was all for free. :whatever:

I still can't explain why people buy Hulk though. It blows my mind that people can have such terrible taste (unless they buy it to laugh at how bad it is I guess)

Because you don't like something must mean people have terrible taste? :whatever: Maybe people like the McGuiness artwork. Maybe they Art Adams artwork when he filled in. Maybe people want to see who the Red Hulk is? Oh, but I forgot I somewhat enjoyed Ultimatum I must be missing 65 percent of my brain mass. :whatever: Sorry Mr. High and Mighty.

I feel like if the marvel editors just did their damn job and corrected Loeb's mistakes, then his work wouldnt even be that bad. It would be nice if Loeb at least acknowledged the fact that he's writing the Ultimate characters and not the 616 ones. But i guess since Loeb is in fact a top seller, the editors dont really give a damn.

I think one of the guys on the Comic Geek Speak podcast said that Loeb was involved in a lot of television producing stuff recently, which could explain the distractions on his comic work.

But, yeah, I mean I'm not a fan of the Ultimate Universe, other than Ultimate Spider-Man, but this whole thing just seemed like a big "let's see how many people we can kill in an extreme manner because it's not the regular Marvel universe". However, I did get enjoyment out of it with the excellent David Finch artwork even though all his people's faces looking like they just got done sucking on a lemon. :oldrazz:

I dropped The Hulk months and months ago and I think Loeb is just angering a lot of fans because he's dragging out this "Who is the Red Hulk?" stuff way too long. I mean they just had the big # 600 issue and my buddy at the comic shop told me that they didn't even reveal it THERE. You would figure that's a good point for a pay off.

Regardless, I got entertainment value out of Ultimatum. I enjoyed it for what it was, which was basically cleaning up the Ultimate Universe and refocusing it. I guess if I was an avid Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four reader I wouldn't really be too happy about this. The only death in the whole thing I was a little upset about was Daredevil because Bendis seemed to actually be building something between Peter and Matt Murdock, but I guess not now!!

I was a big fan of the Ultimate Universe, except for Spidey. The deaths in this "finale" were just ridiculous. I'd pick apart all the nonsensical things that happened but it'd be a waste of time. They clearly just wanted to quickly restart everything. I'm not too anxious to pick up Ultimate Avengers or any future X-Men books b/c they killed off so many members. A FF book would suck b/c Doom is dead. Ugh. I'd have rathered them literally restart the universe from scratch, not just kill everybody.

I understand that. Like I said in the thread above. If I were into X-Men and Fantastic Four I would have been furious. I have not read either of those books in years, so it really had no consequence to me.

The Spider-man Ultimate Requiem stuff was freakin' brilliant, in my opinion. That's probably because Spider-Man is alive.

But I agree, if they really wanted to kind of reboot things they could have done it another way and not brutally KILL those that they didn't need around anymore.

I'd have prefered to see Magneto and Doom getting into this violent fight and wrecking the planet and some cosmic entity pops in, says we(humans/mutants) are making a huge mess, and rewinds time to the beginning of the ultimate universe. Something like that. Not just killing for killing's sake.

And anybody that knows me online knows that I'm all for heroes killing villains, but Cyclops blasting Magneto in the face at the end was so ridiculous.

That was pretty messed up. Though I think that Cyclops was doing it more because Magneto killed Professor X and he wanted to even things out, or whatever. But everyone else was just like, "Oh, Cyclops killed Magneto...that's cool, lets go home". Heh.

The first few issues of this miniseries I thought this thing was going to really be something great and major but last issue and this one it seemed like they quickly just threw it together last minute and said, "Ok, here's the end".

Though, to me, it was cool seeing important characters getting offed left and right. And it also didn't seem like Ben Grimm would be one to just outright kill someone just because they egged someone on to destroy the world. That seemed quite weird though I haven't read UFF since the first Bendis/Millar run.

Well, actually I read the Millar/Land run with the Zombie FF, that was pretty cool, I forgot I had that run...but that was it.

I gave Loeb so many chances to redeem himself. Even after doing lots of crappy books these past couple of years, i STILL gave Loeb the benefit of the doubt with Ultimatum. In fact i was genuinely excited about Ultimatum, even more excited than Secret Invasion. It was a simple premise: the marvel heroes vs Magneto for the fate of the world....i'm in!! Yet somehow Loeb managed to ruin even a simple premise like that. And why did Doom have to die, i mean come on man, that just made no sense!

I just never buy Magneto as being so unstoppable.

All someone has to do is get in a lucky shot and he should be easy to kill.

Plus, to manipulate all the stuff he does would probably require superhuman brain powers to multitask

The deaths that bothered me the most were:

Strange: Totally F'd up
Pym: Most unecessary
Angel: How/why did they let him rush Magneto by himself after Storm's speech earlier?
Doom: How did Thing get close enough to him to squeeze his head?

He was using Thor's hammer to do all the damage which doesnt make sense because no one other than thor can pick up the hammer.

I don't think Mjolnir works like that in the ultimate universe. Some bald black dude took it in Ultimates 2, I believe.

This is one of the worst stories since Miller's DKR2.

Riiiiiight. Because if you like it then you must be missing 65 percent of your brain mass?

Obviously the poll was posed like that for humor's sake. Also, since you're oblivious to it, I even put the other end of the poll as a demeaning statement (involves drinking own vomit).

Also, I tried changing it shortly after posting the poll (so as to stop whiners from going on and on about it), but realized I couldn't and didn't want to bother getting a mod to do it.

ALSO, I already said all this pages ago but you obviously haven't bothered reading the bloody thread.

Three things:

1) As Teardrop kindly pointed out, I get my free copies from the website I write reviews for, who gets them in advance directly from Marvel

2) With the up and down quality of comics, even from the big two, these days, and with the fact that even with the most successful comic company in the world you may have to unexpectedly wait years to possibly get a complete story arc (ie, the last issue of Ultimates 2, the majority of Ult Wolv/Hulk, and the rest of New Universal, which I'm STILL waiting for), I have no problem at all with those who read downloaded comics as long as it's only to check out whether they want to buy them or not.

3) Making blind assumptions about someone you don't know is one of the most ignorant things you can do, let alone repeating the false accusations in multiple posts in a row, you smug ignoramus.

And I've read almost every Ultimate U issue that's been put out btw, so u can throw that theory out.

You mean you downloaded them off the Internet for free to complain about them. :whatever:

No, I mean I OWN them, they're in my long boxes. In fact I've got a few thousand comics, (which isn't the biggest collection but isn't bad I'd say), which includes nearly every single Ultimate U comic. Which means I take this crap that Loeb's pulled with Ultimatum a little more personally than some might. And which, I might add may even make my comments here more justified than yours since you said yourself that you're "not a fan of the Ultimate universe".

Again: you smug ignoramus.
