Hey if the studio's happy I'm happy :). I loved this movie and just wanna make sure Jeff Fowler gets the proper budget increase for the sequel.

Well it doesn’t look like the movie is slowing down a huge amount at the BO. It’s already overtaken FB which came out a week later and beat off some other new movies this weekend. It’s doing great.
Definitely doing well. Has already caught up with the total domestic box office of it's original run. Pretty sure it's passed by Uncharted in terms of domestic box office (thank goodness) and will take the domestic video game crown pretty fast.

It is doing great for sure. Still some time left before Doctor Strange takes the box office over. Holding second place for 2 weekends in a row was nice. It's already a success, but the next few weeks will just further cement that. Which is good since it's a really fun movie.

Should be a reminder that they did a lot of things right. And that just means that Sonic 3 should be an absolute blast.

I wonder if even when Doctor Strange comes out if it’ll still hold strong. It might serve as counter programming for families wanting something less heavy to watch.

Hmmm wonder if the studio's happy with that result. It seems...good not great. Movie deserves a lot more money. Surprised more kids arent flocking to this.

its budget was like 90 million heard for movies to break even you only need to make about double the budget has of course the theaters get to keep some of the money for 1. The movie is going to end up like double what it need to just break even meaning a solid profit not ever movie is going to make like a billion + and movie is going to make more than fist movie at the same time I think first movie may have made like a extra 30 million if not for covid has its legs did get cut of a little earlier because of lock downs.

Yep it’s holds have been really good and it still has a couple of weeks before MoM comes out dominates everything. Really looking forward to Sonic 3.

Paramount is definitely happy. They opened up the CinemaCon presentation with Sonic the Hedgehog and a Sonic-themed rendition of "Super Sonic." Chris Aronson came out dressed as Robotnik.

Definitely nice to see it take that domestic crown. Now over 320 million worldwide as well which isn't bad in the slightest! Will see how much more it can do before Dr. Strange takes over next weekend. Past that I guess we'll have to see how well it can do in Japan in a few months. I'm surprised it will take until August for them to get to see it. Regardless where it finishes, it's done great. Nice to see something you enjoy doing well.

Finally got around to taking my kids to see this. Sonic is still the king of video game cinema.
Glad to hear you all had a great time.

Something interesting to consider:

Uncharted has made $395,042,079 WW ($146,442,079 Dom ; $248,600,000 Intl)

Sonic 2 is currently at $248,600,000 WW ($161,114,672 Dom; $162,600,000 Intl)

Uncharted has $72 mill lead on Sonic 2. With Sonic 2 coming to Paramount on May 24; i'm curious to see how Sonic 2 is by the end of the month. Also S2 doesn't come out in Japan to Aug, and I wonder just how much can it make at the Japanese BO given their not so hot on Sonic as the US is.

Detective Pikachu still has more than both at $433 million worldwide ($144,105,346 Dom; $288,900,000 Intl).

The first Sonic movie only made about $2.5 million in Japan but that was at the start of a global pandemic. I imagine this one will at least do a little better.

Here's the first clip for Sonic Prime animated series:

I'm kind of impressed how close Sonic is looking to get. Especially since it won't get any Chinese box office money. That is one of the bigger differences between it and the other top video game movies globally. Less so with Uncharted since it only got around 17 million there. But that's the reason Warcraft sits as King.

No idea how it will do in Japan honestly. The pandemic had to have done damage to it. Came out in June. Of course Sonic isn't necessarily the biggest franchise in Japan, but I can't imagine that helped. I guess we'll see how the second movie does. It'd be tough to do worse in Japan than the first one did. And if it can get any love here then top 5 for video game movies worldwide with owning the crown domestically is pretty ok.

Awesome. While I didn't hate the Uncharted movie I really hope Sonic 2 beats it at the BO as it did a lot right for video game movies.

350M is a rock solid number. If it can scratch 400M somehow that’d be awesome.

Seems like it might get close, as there's still gas in the film's domestic box office. Looks like it might surpass $180 million stateside.

As of Monday its sitting at $176 million but its starting to really get into the tail end of the Domestic BO. Only made about 200k on Monday.

If it has one more solid weekend I could see it hitting $180

Doesn’t it still need to open in Japan as well?

It opens in Japan in August...but I wouldn't expect much out of the JPNBO.

When all its said and done...I imagine the WWBO to be somewhere between $365-$375; which sadly would put it below Uncharted and FB:SoD at the WWBO. Which is kinda of a bummer, but impressive for both other movies due to their strong International market draw. Because Sonic beat Uncharted by a fair amount and whipped FB pretty hard.

Still ranking in the top 5 and made $4.6 million last weekend. It's definitely making over $180 million, EASY. It will be over that by this weekend. $185 million-ish is probably the ceiling at this point.

What other major territories has it not been released in besides Japan?

It will still be below Uncharted and Detective Pikachu worldwide, but still much higher than both domestically.

I'd be content with $185 million domestic

I think Japan is all that's left. But yeah the classic Domestic Market vs International Market debate comes back.

Domestic market still seems to be the deciding factor when it comes to sequels. Look at Warcraft.

Very true.

Though due to the fact that Paramount announced Sonic 3 & The Knuckles Spin Off like a month before Sonic 2 came out...shows that they are ready to put forth the money.

*slides Paramount a twenty* Now bring back Sally and Company....
