Homecoming Sony E-mails on wikileaks

Its possible I guess
They were attached to that animated deal like I said. Id prefer them over goddard

And Phil Lord just reacted to my tweet. Odd and I'm ashamed.

I've posted that:

Not sure if this was news before but the #SonyLeaks reveal that @philiplord and @chrizmillr were who Amy Pascal had in mind for Spider-Man.

And that:

If Amy Pascal wanted @philiplord and @chrizmillr for Spider-Man, I wonder what happened? Are they in contention for the job or not?

Right afterwards he posted this:

philip lord @philiplord · 6m 6 minutes ago
I self-censor how I write to friends and colleagues on email now. Very dangerous for a free society. Bottom line: Leaks Limit Speech.

I feel ashamed by this but then again, I'd like to see them directing Spider-Man. Besides, Sony has allowed MY information to be stolen also, so what they should be doing is a better job with their internet security.

Chris Miller & Phil Lord would be a ****ing dream come true!

That's why you don't tweet at the person you are speaking about. Next time, don't use the @ symbol when mentioning the person. People did the same thing with Mary Elizabeth Winstead back when Shaliene was cast as MJ and she told them to leave her out of it.

Yes I'm not good with twitter etiquette at all, thanks for the tip.

Meeting Recap
Email-ID 70305
Date 2014-10-21 14:03:29
From minghella, hannah
To pascal, amy, belgrad, doug, deluca, michael
After much discussion there seemed to be a number of points of agreement today with a possible way forward outlined below. Some questions remain. Here's a recap:

1) the idea of PP/SM being featured in Cap3 sounds fantastic and an exciting way for the character to be reintroduced to the fans with a new actor.
Q: could we participate in casting the new actor for SM and any other key cast related to him like Aunt May, Mary-Jane etc?
Q: what do we get as a licensing fee - we should ask for a combo upfront fee plus some back-end (for example maybe $10M fee against $20M)
- the Russos will have to give us a detailed pitch of what they are planning as part of the deal so that we can continue to develop our own projects accordingly.

2) once the character is introduced as part of the Civil Wars the next SM stand alone movie should logically follow on from that.
Q: do we have to commit to that now? Could we just agree to the Cap3 appearance and then decide based on how the relationship works? And how we feel about Drew's script when it comes in?
- IF we agree to Marvel producing the next stand alone movie then it should be a one picture commitment. They must commit to a 2017 release or pay us a penalty tbd (but let's say $100M). We have to work out a mechanism that gives us the ability to control the budget. For example, if they don't provide a movie that can be made for $200M and released in 2017 then they have to pay the penalty or we proceed and they are on the hook for budget overages. Similarly we have to commit to a certain level of spending to market the movie TBD.
- the spin here is that we are sub-contracting Marvel to produce the movie for Sony so that both Sony and Marvel can participate in the expanded universe and creative opportunities that come from reuniting SM with his peers. Sony will still finance, market and release the movie.

3) we retain the right to make our SS movie in 2016
- ideally we only have to commit to Cap3 now OR we commit to Cap3 plus one stand-alone and retain the right to develop and make our other movies thereafter.
- in either scenario we need to know exactly what Marvel is planning so we can develop future movies in tandem (as our own policy insurance).
- once we read Drew's script we can determine whether it's a movie we believe in and whether it can follow Cap3. IF doing Cap3 precludes us from doing SS then we definitely want a SM movie in 2017 that either Marvel produces or we produce because otherwise we have given up our window in 2016 for very little financial gain in 2015.

4) we continue to develop with Drew, Lisa, Lord & Miller and protect our ability to go make those movies should the partnership with Marvel not work.
- we should carve out animation even if the relationship proves successful since this will be such a separate creative endeavor (think Lego Batman co-existing with Batman vs Superman).

5) we do not commit to more than Cap3 and one stand alone SM movie at this stage to protect our rights and maintain leverage.
- Should the relationship prove successful then we create a mechanism that guarantees up to two more stand alone SM movies if released no more than 2 years apart otherwise the rights revert to us and a penalty is paid (for example $100M per movie).
- also should the relationship continue beyond Cap3 and one stand alone then Marvel can continue to license SM to be a part of their other movies for a fee (for example $10M vs $20M per picture).

Basically, Lord and Miller animation Spidey is for Sony their back up plan if Marvel's plan doesn't pan out, or at least some people think that way, this email comes from Hannah Minghella.

There are a LOT of interesting info here too, especially how the deal is been made, they are probably waiting to see how Civil War and Spider-Man goes to see how they'll proceed from there. I'd argue that without Sony's annoying and completely clueless intermission, Spider-Man will be a brilliant Marvel film.

Sony should make their animated Spider-Man, regardless. Say what you will about Sony's ability to make live action but (IMHO) SSM is the best interpretation of Spider-Man outside of the comics.

Sony itself had next to nothing to do with the creative process really, though- but I'm sure Miller/Lord would do a swell job if they were given the freedom that the TSSM crew had.

I'm just not sure about them as of late, they just seem out of touch as a studio. Put people you trust in there and let them be creative. Some of those ideas they had for Sinister Six sounded like something I might've thought of when I was in 7th grade and think it'd be the baddest badass movie everrrr!!! but I read that stuff and it's more like: this is why you guys were struggling.

I cant believe theyre so adamant on that damn Sinister Six movie as if it is a guaranteed success

I'd pay good money to put this on a billboard next to Sony's headquarters.

This is definitely my favorite thread on the Hype. Sony is so clueless.

I have no idea why Sony/Marvel don't bring out straight to blu ray animated movies. They would make at least as much money as the Batman justice League movies. There has pretty much been an animated movie for every major Marvel character EXCEPT Spider-Man.

That's one thing I hope for someday. Hopefully. Batman's has like 4 animated movies coming out every year now, he's had to have had 20 of them by now... clearly I'm embittered! Marvel should try something similar in the future, there are lots of stories that would make fun animated films. :cwink:

Get greg Wiseman to make Spider-Man: The College Years

Straight to blu ray.

Re:
Russos still courting Matthew. They have been writing pages for him but we're getting down to the wire. If he doesn't say he wants to do the movie in the next couple of weeks then we miss our window but the Russos are now playing the long game and would prefer to make it with him after Cap3 than do it now with someone else...

Notes on asm2

spidey
These are the notes we wrote last night on the plane. They need to be cleaned up but ROC maybe you can combine with anything else from the meeting/Kevin that should be worked in...

reel one

- we need to see a version of the movie that starts with spiderman. we know that there is a version of the plane sequence that could just set-up roosevelt but we need to see what it feels like when we start in an enthusiastic space and let the parent story play as a mystery. That would immediately cut 7 minutes and you'd be starting with Peter.

- we need better lines for spidey in the armored truck chase. they're not getting the laughs we want. maybe this is where a comedy round table comes in. Also, please take another look at paul's performance to tone down how cartoonish it is.

reel two

- the break-up outside the dim sum restaurant is better because it's 5 seconds shorter than last time but that's not short enough.

- why do we need one year later at all? It's odd that it comes after the montage given that the montage already implies a passage of time and we see spidey going into a burning building right before waking up with soot on his face.

- don't need to see Peter looking at the briefcase in his room after Aunt May wakes him up (30 seconds)

- don't need Aunt May's conversation about the double shift. We don't follow the idea that she's a nurse. Can we cut into the scene when Peter arrives.

- we want to see a version that cuts Max's apartment completely. The audience thinks he's too pathetic and it's hurting his villainy. Also, seeing his love for Spidey further exasperates how quick his turn is. Let's see what it's like when we pick him up at work. 2 mins 40 seconds.

- we have to fix Norman's make-up as well as the rash on Harry's neck. It's too much. The illness that they both have is confusing people. It doesn't make sense that he looks like a goblin. We have to distinguish the hereditary disease from the transformation into the goblin. Also seems coincidental that Harry starts feeling symptoms as soon as Norman dies.

Reel three

- a lot of the cards from parents and kids said the eels were too intense. Maybe we need to cut the eel going into his mouth.

- when Peter is researching the Osbornes he shouldn't also research his father.

- when Peter and Gwen met in the first movie it was so magical and even though watching them is wonderful, we're not being sensitive enough to the fact this isn't knew for the audiences. we need to cut down their reunion on the high line.

Reel four

- it has to be totally clear what happens to Electro in Times Square and why he turns on Spidey. There's no evidence that Spidey does anything that would cause Electro to think Spidey betrayed him. We have to really understand that he felt completely invisible, was told by Spidey that he was important but then Spiderman didn't even think enough of him to remember his name. He has to feel completely rejected by spiderman.

- we can cut the two beats of Peter and Gwen at home thinking about one another. Peter fixing his web shooters should come right after Times Square. In the script we go from TS to Peter looking at broken webshooters to fixing them to Harry calling to Peter going to Oscorp and the shenanigans at Oscorp without interruption. Can we lay out a version of this section of the movie like the script did including Peter and Gwen running into each other at Oscorp. Playing this all sequentially will help give more momentum and we won't feel like we're treading water.

Reel five

- need to work on the scene at Ravenscroft. Can we tone down Kafka. He's too cartoonish and Dr Strangelove-lite.

- after Oscorp go straight to Spidey telling Harry he can't give him his blood (so cut Aunt May scene and the scene at Oxford). That cuts 7 minutes.

- we discussed having a beat here where Gwen tells Peter she's going to Oxford and leaving the next day. If we add this beat how do we have Peter let Gwen leave? How does the scene end?

- now, we stay with Harry talking to Felicia and getting fired. We do not need to see a beat of Harry leaving the building and getting into his car.

Reel six

- now have Peter at home, upset after his conversation with Harry, finding the subway token

- Harry frees Electro

- Peter and Roosevelt. Peter needs to come out of Roosevelt looking for Gwen. How do we get away with cutting both Aunt May scenes? How does he know she's about to get on the plane?

- then go from Harry and Electro breaking into Oscorp through Harry's transformation into the Goblin.

- Peter goes to stop Gwen leaving. Bridge sequence

- should we cut the planes nearly colliding?

Ending
- we have to solve the problem that Electro gets electrocuted but Spiderman doesn't.
- there were a lot of comments about the itsby bitsy spider.
- we need to make sure that we're dramatizing two things: first that peter has consciously decided to break a promise he said he'd keep and secondly in his mind he's thinking he can handle it because he'll keep her safe.

- how does she die?the audience knows she's dead before Peter does. Let's try a version where we discover that with Peter.

- the goblin shows up and then he sees Gwen. we're not sure if it's clear that's the moment he realizes Peter is Spiderman and now he's going to take away Spiderman's "hope". We need to understand Peter's realization that now that Harry realizes Gwen is his girlfriend it will put her in jeopardy. Let's be inside each character's understanding of what's happening.

- would it be better if we did the Captain Stacey flashback here (you're going to make enemies) so we're full of dread and anticipating what's inevitably going to happen.

- on the bridge Peter has to say he can look after her and his hubris should be foreboding.
- we could move Peter sitting on the gargoyle to the end to give some space between watching the speech and the rhino.
- we can add to Gwen's speech to talk about hope, and the fact she has to continue on after her father's death and honoring his legacy, taking him with her.

- less is more with the rhino
- is there more to do with the little kid?

I think Sinister Six can work just change Kingpin into the leader and who assembles the Six.

More notes

Spidey
Here's what marc and matt agreed to last night from the notes:
Cut the last lingering shot on dead mary from the plane so you go out on richard.
Adding new spidey adr to armored car that they think will help with alexei.
Put gwen's speech back the way it was.
Add back "get a job"
Take out first obssession wall.

Take out exterior of peter going to see harry -- learn that peter is there when the butler tells harry.

Add back "model employee"

Trim surveillance part of Harry and Peter on the beach.

On the beach peter no longer mentions roosevelt b/c he won't have opened the briefcase yet.

On the highline they're going to really try to take out "woodland creature paw"

At timsquare they are going to fix the voices in electro's had. Add more spidey theme when he's winning.

Replace "need a hand" with better joke.

After time square go to peter montage thinking of gwen/taking out briefcase/ obssesion wall after going home and being bummed that gwen is leaving. End with do I have to lose you too.

Then go to harry in his office.

Then webshooter montage.

After Aunt May tells Peter about his parents he zeroes in on a photo of him and harry as kids with their dads (realizing he has to tell harry he can't give him his blood).

Spiderman goes to Harry.

Harry yells at Spiderman.

Peter goes to oxford -- gwen is the only person he can talk to about all thi stuff -- he's not going to talk about their relationship. Scene becomes more grounded real. He realizes where she is and let's her go.

Peter goes home and is sad more than mad -- take the violence of tearing down obsession wall/find tokens.

Go to roosevelt. Trim down dad's speech. Now it is too long. Trying to do too many things.

They're going to shorten felicia telling harry about SP.

Intercut pwr plant with planes.

Just work with Feige

But if we decline Feige, I also feel we could develop a new movie that didn’t have to slog through the origin story and could deliver for the fans a movie that uses the origin of VENOM from the Ultimates, where it’s not even an alien symbiote but something designed to help people, I think it was a bendis story and it ties to peter’s history (but I wouldn’t go near his parents). Truth is there are tons of great ideas in all the work modern writers like Bendis, J Michael Strascynski, and Brian K. Vaughn did for Spidey in recent years. Even if you didn’t go near classic silver age villains you could still have fun with Venom, Carnage and the Hobgoblin. There’s enough iterations of those characters to map out a saga.

It's good to search "spidey" they used that for email titles more than Spider-Man

Spidey DI?

The 2D DI will be done on Monday, March 3. If you want to see how they've approached the color we can screen for you on Tuesday or Wednesday and there will still be time to make changes.

The 3D color will be available to see on March 13 or 14 and there will still be time to make adjustments. Let me know if you'd like us to arrange for you to see it.

Thanks

Reality sinking in

SPIDEY

I am so sorry I missed you today. After lunch I got pulled into a screening and then a notes session and got out after you had already left. Look, the reviews weren't ideal but I still think you can get to 90 plus this weekend. Kids are a big factor and of course evening shows are important and I understand Fandango advance sales are strong. I also thought the campaign was really far reaching. It will be a marathon this weekend and less of a sprint and of course international is going to be very big and China hasn't even started! :) XOXO

spidey univ time frames

We have lots of time fyi…

we must start principal photography on OUR spidey universe film w/in 3 yrs & 9 mos after initial theatrical release of Spider-Man 5 for the 1st time anywhere in the world, released in the UK on 4/10/14, so by 1/9/18.

we must release our Spidey univ film 6 w/in 5 yrs & 9 mos after the release of Spider-Man 5, released on 4/10/14, so by 1/9/20.

Jesus, someone really hates Aunt May. Sounds like they'd have cut Sally Field out of the film entirely had they got away with it. Who signs an actress of her calibre and then does that?
