Homecoming Sony E-mails on wikileaks

Spidey thought

Hey Amy - just a couple of rando thoughts from 35,000 LAX-JFK:

- A rising trend we see with Millennials are the really extreme forms of experiential exercise like Tough Mudder (a sort of filthy triathalon), the Color Run and even things like Hot Power Yoga, veganism etc. Millennials will often post "N.B.D." on their social media after doing it , as in No Big Deal, also known as the "humble brag".....wondering if Spidey could get into that in some way....he's super athletic, bendy, strong, intense....and it's all NBD to him, of course.

- EDM (electronic dance music) is the defining music for Millennials. Wondering if there's an EDM angle somewhere with Spidey? His movements are beautiful, would be awesome with a killer DJ behind it

- Snapchat just launched a "story" functionality, which is sort of "day in the life of me" told in a series of snapchats that expire after 24 hours. It has a very VIP quality about it, since invitation only. Getting invited into Spidey's Snapchat circle would be huge, and very buzzworthy and cool.

Also on American Hustle, I was thinking (and it may be way too late for this), it would be awesome to get all the cool fashion brands to do a huge 70s style collab.....Urban Outfitters, Free People, American Apparel etc. They're sort of leaning 70's already, Macklemore hitting it a bit with Thrift Shop style etc. Would be interesting for Am Hustle to be the name behind that.

Hope not too random! N

Spidey summit

I have worked with PSB and come up with what I feel is a great approach for our worldwide deep dive on Spidey. As discussed, it will be a mixed methodology of quant and qual and we will conduct the research in the following territories:
US*UKFRANCE*GERMANYBRAZIL*RUSSIA*CHINAMEXICO*SOUTH KOREA
*markets where we will do both general and family
The total cost is roughly 450K-500K.
With a January date for the summit I need to start the study immediately.
Am I okay to proceed

Spider tomorrow

Spidey tomorrow
fyi - as you may already know, they have decided to show us the movie with the new ending tomorrow. After we've seen it we can decide which version of the ending we prefer to show at the International Summit on Wednesday morning. They will have both versions ready.

Spidey universe ep credits

With Alex Kurtzman (& Bob Orci) acknowledging that we're mutually agreeing to shelve the negotiated ASM3 writing deal, and having the advice from Alex and Bob's lawyer that Bob is no longer involved with any of the Spidey Universe projects, Hannah, Rachel and I discussed altering the executive producing deal for Alex on all three pictures (Sinister Six, Venom, and ASM3) so that he retains just a 50% share of what he and Bob were expecting to receive as a team.
Jeff Pinkner and Ed Solomon are only getting $100K fixed comp per picture as executive producers, and none of the contingent compensation (Alex and Bob's doing, not ours). Drew's EP deal for each picture would remain the same -- $100K fixed comp and 20% of the EP contingent comp.
So, after taking Bob's share away on each picture, Alex is left with the following:
Sinister Six: $100K fixed EP fee, plus $1,012,500 in bonuses.Venom: $100K fixed EP fee, plus $2.25M in bonuses applicable against 2.5%GP @CB-0, w/ payment deferred until CB-7.5.ASM3: $100K fixed EP fee, plus 1,125,000 in bonuses.
Our goal is to claw back what we rightfully should with Bob's absence, but not open the entire EP structure up to renegotiation at this point given how difficult it was to reach agreement in the first place.
Any objection to our proceeding on this basis? If not, I'll make the call to Alex's attorney.

Playing dumb?

Matt just called to ask if there was anything to worry about.
Said he had super weird mtg with you yesterday.
I played dumb and said I was rushing over to HW but we have get in sync.

Brilliant!

smh they joke about this picture

all the emails are interesting reads, yes it shows they really dont have any clue or idea with spidey. So again i do hope that deal is now set that marvel has the hands more on the creative end of things. And just let sony handle the money side of things and let marvel under disney give sony a film that is pretty much all marvel but get to have sony name on it and sony retain more of the profits.

FW: spidey universe

YES, any spidey universe picture qualifies (so YES venom and sin 6 qualify to keep the “Production Term” up and running in our favor).

Subject: RE: spidey universe

That is my reading. Andrew had asked an additional question when he called regarding release obligations, the excerpt from the executive summary answering such being as follows:

1) The “Production Term” extends indefinitely as long as SPE continues to produce and release Pictures as follows:

• As a general rule, SPE must (a) commence production of each Picture within 3 years and 9 months after the release of the preceding Picture and (b) release each Picture within 5 years and 9 months after the release of the preceding Picture.

• If SPE releases 3 Pictures within 8 consecutive years, then SPE may extend the foregoing deadlines as follows: (a) commence production of the next Picture within 5 years after the release of the preceding Picture and (b) release such Picture within 7 years after the release of the preceding Picture.

• Each of the foregoing deadlines is subject to extension for Force Majeure.

Ira, please confirm but as I read the agreement, the rolling Production Term is based on the previous “Picture” which is any theatrical based on the “Property” so Venom and Sinister 6 would each count as Pictures and restart the 3 year 9 month period.

Just want to confirm that venom or sin 6 qualify so that if we produce timely, they serve to keep our marvel rts vested….

Pls advise on the requirements…

Spidey pages

Definitely better. A few thoughts:

It seems odd sequencing that the newscaster tells us 5 months has passed before we hear that Harry has been remanded to Ravencroft. Do we even need the newscaster to give us that info if the very next scene establishes Harry is at Ravencroft.

Who is the actor who plays the Gentleman? If his role is taking on greater significance do we want to consider re-casting? I know that's a practical impossibility but thought it worth discussing. Also, is Drew on board with these pages?

Maybe the Rhino is breaking out of Oscorp? Or some kind of laboratory... or testing facility... or something to do with technology or even a government building... something that implies larger stakes...

on the animated movie, would sony even have had the rights to do an animated movie. They dont have the animation rights since it got sold back to marvel when sony sold the merch rights back to them. So i dont even think an animated movie would be legally able to happen under sony.

Venom

LETS TALK THIS IS REALLY SIMILAR TO WHAT MATT PITCHED ME THIS AM ABOUT VENOM WHICH HE DOESNT THINK IS A MOVIE ON ITS OWN BUT THAT SPIDERMAN ANS SS ARE THE TEAM IN THE NEXT MOVIE HE GOES TO THEM FOR HELP/……MAYBE FIGHTING CARNAGE IR HE WEARS THE BLACK SUIT BUT ALL THE SS GUYS THINK ITS LAME AND HE TAKES IT OFF AND IT FALLS INTO THE WRONG HANDS

Critics must be wrong

I get these all day:

Dude! Just got back from seeing the movie w Ryder and Amy... Both clutching my hands the whole way. We ****ing LOVED it. Seriously staggering achievement - we're all very proud of our pal/brother/Godfather. Manhola clearly in love w Emma and couldn't stand to see her go. Seemed to me a ballsy bit of storytelling. Big congrats!!!

Amy and Doug - this is the proposal Mike and I discussed and would like to proceed with. Please let us know if you have any comments or concerns.

Mike I think the treatment fee for both Phil and whichever writer he picks should be a flat fee split between the two of them. I know he and Chris have a treatment quote at WB. We should find out if that's within the 1.5 but I doubt it and have a vague recollection of it being around 100K.

I also want to raise the larger issue that we are clearly breaking SPA's precedents with this deal. We need to discuss how to protect their business plan if we make this offer.

Here is the info on Phil & Chris' producing and writing deals for Lego 2. As discussed, feels like we should book these, including the writing even though Phil will be writing alone, but say that if Phil does take on a partner, he has to pay the partner out of his writing fees, although, the treatment fee paid to the third party who will work with Phil to break story would be on top, I think, right?

Producing — this is Phil and Chris' half of a deal, the aggregate of which is being split with Dan Lin and Roy Lee.

Amy

you and I share a nutty love for that boy and we wanted to do right by him. Its been hard to compete with thoes first movies because they were the first and because they(at least the first two) were so good. and then of course you all totally raised the bar. But I think we got something this time. You have been an amazing support on this movie at every turn

Not just giving us intelligent thoughtful notes that actually helped us make the movie better
But helping us all along the way for years ...looking at comic book covers and one sheet pictures and discussing strategy. You have been amazing tom.

On the way home tonight I stopped at botrus and saw the last movie from the aunt may scene through the credits with the real music and in 3d and I almost died. Please have rachel take you over to post production any time too see the 3d footage or anything else

also the Alicia keys hans zimmer pharell lamar hedrick song is crazy amazing ....quite a collection of talent

Trailer reaction

Whilst we’re trailering & attached to all major films playing right now….CAPTAIN AMERICA, NOAH, DIVERGENT ETC

…..Interesting to note that the trailer is getting the best & noticeable/loudest reaction from the young girls seeing DIVERGENT…..seems Andrew Garfield is definitely the draw for them……and they love Emma too.

If we can get the teen males & girls…we’re in great shape.

Only 6 days to go…..hope the UK Premiere went well !

Spider-Man Lightning
Electro
Upside Down
Upside Down
Spidey vs. Electro
Upside Down
Spidey vs. Electro
Face Off
Eye

Korea Future marketing could focus on Spider-Man action and being overwhelmed by multiple and powerful villains. General awareness not as strong yet (though not very strong for a lot of movies) Print: “Upside Down” (showed moment to look forward to, helped 3D)and “Spider-Man Lightning” (good reminder of type of action they expect, “cool” image)have broadest appeal “Eye” also worked, sparked intrigue about villain Electro not as important as Spidey in visuals Triptych successful (showed danger, stakes) Trailer: Enemies (impressive visually, showed Electro, raised stakes around secret, more sinister) & Plan (good mixture of action and fun, didn’t give away too much) – good visually Mom’s felt enemies might be too scary Visually impress audiences first They like that Spidey’s facing a big battle Look for humor that fits into the trailer, not sticks out like chimney joke

Mexico Spidey vs. Electro & Upside-Down were preferred one sheets Triptych made people feel like Spidey or someone would die because it felt like too many enemies - standout Trailer: Enemies better for teen boys (they like more enemies) & Plan better for parents (they like simpler plot) Trailer: emphasize Spidey in action Don’t push Emma more, don’t push Electro story more

Russia Print: Upside-Down vs. Spidey vs. Electro worked overall, Triptych, also worked – focus on showdown Trailer: Enemies (suspense, action) & Plan (easy to follow) – consider building intensity from outset 3D is important Humor and warmth help Push Gwen more Don’t need to push Max, show Electro For more targeted materials, consider the following:

o FOR ALL: Bright visuals, spectacular action sequences, speed and dynamism, heroism (saving the city, ordinary people and loved ones), some humor and a touch of romance

o FOR ADULTS: Greater tension and intensity, deeper mystery / further plot points (Oscorp surveillance, Peter’s father)

o FOR FAMILY/TEENS: Softer tone and a human side to Peter, tease a connection between the villains
France Print: love them all, but Upside Down is the favorite (action visceral, novel look, eye-catching), followed by Spider-Man vs. Electro (action is visceral) Great reaction to Triptych banner Special “France trailer” to go on Cloudy 2 was very popular Hit at Oscorp secrets/parents, don’t push. Focus on straightforward storyline, humor, and keep Peter Parker at center of story Reengage the audience Captain America 2 not competitive Families are very gettable Teens in reach Multiple villain positioning is appealing, but Electro should be at front Focus on action Don’t push Gwen

UK Summer movies not on their radar – few aware of ASM 2 and Capt. America. Like Jamie Foxx, like Emma Stone, Garfield “mixed” reactions Print: “Face Off” had strongest appeal across groups (intriguing, sinister, shows new villain), and “Eye” (unique perspective, focused on new character Should primarily convey action + new challenge; Electro helps Triptych: successful Trailers: both Enemies and Plan were uniformly successful Enemies liked by mothers, teen girls, older groups for sinister, dark tone, more character and back story Plan liked by younger boys and mothers for young girls because of humor, simpler plot Next piece should be mindful of balancing tone – different groups like different levels of dark/light Families should not be overlooked Multiple villains works Must emphasize what is new about the movie Need to maintain compassion for Spidey/Peter – have to show both sides of his dual identity Show more Gwen if it feels purposeful, not just because

Re: Food for thought...

I love that you're thinking big and suggesting we open things up going forward.
I'm not sure whether there is a rule that says Spidey always has to be in Manhattan.
But I am drawn to seeing him in other locales and several of your specific ideas (on a boat, in snow) are visually intriguing.

On Nov 3, 2013, at 2:01 PM, wrote:

Through all the recent marketing conversations about the trailer I've been doing a lot of thinking about the next Spider-Man movie. I know we all agree that we have to keep moving the franchise in a new direction and find new frontiers for our hero to explore. With that in mind I have two thoughts I wanted to share -

- one of the reasons it's hard to think of new visually iconic moments for Spidey is because we've made five movies in Manhattan. For as long as he's swinging down city streets, and under bridges, and down alley ways, and up skyscrapers, and through subway tunnels, there is always going to be a familiarity to the action. I genuinely believe that Oscorp is a global corporation with offices and secret research facilities all around the world and I think it's time we see Spidey in different and unique environments. I'm not suggesting the whole movie take place somewhere else but I'd love to see Spidey in another iconic city like Tokyo or Paris or London... or somewhere completely different like Istanbul or Monte Carlo... or out at a secret Oscorp compound in the dessert... or snow (picture that blue and red against a blanket of white). And how do those different environments interact with his powers? What happens when he's out at sea on a boat and can't swing away? Or in a jungle swinging through trees.

- also, in the last two movies the stakes have been deeply personal. While this is emotionally satisfying and the movies must always be personal, I feel that spidey's heroism is limited by the intentions of our villains. The plots have been somewhat insular and it's time to open it up. In the first movie a few people were infected by the Lizard's gas but the threat never felt that big. In this movie Electro threatens a black-out but despite two planes nearly colliding it's not clear what his intentions are beyond turning the lights off. One of the ways the Marvel and Batman movies get their scope is by having villains with agendas that go beyond the heroes themselves and have more serious implications for the world at large.

I genuinely believe it's possible to achieve both of the above ideas without losing what is essential and iconic about Spider-Man. I genuinely love the last two movies we've made but as we contemplate making a 6th spidey movie I think it's time to shake it up a little more... anyway, all food for thought...

Female/Male

Female:
Overall, I loved the movie
Some small notes, but the feeling and the look --really its great
And in 3D it is going to be spectacular

Spiderman has always been "a story about a girl"...and this love story
really works. Teenage girls are going to love them...emma is strong and
confident and doing her own thing and the boy comes to get her. When he
tells her that he follows her once a day-maybe twice-i think young girls
will swoon...

The electo scenes are gigantic and huge and look incredible. Love all of
that....

Dane Dehaan is a great addition to the cast, he has done a terrific job
here....

Story has been simplified if feels-and feels good. Doesn't feel too
complicated with 2 villains and him still trying to figure out what
happened to his father and juggle his responsibility as a super hero.
Lots of things that explain things (fears with black hat giving reason for
rhino at end, dad on computer at roosevelt, ) feel good--but still some
work will need to do (possibly) with open ended questions about rhino,
harry...

I think the pacing gets a teeny bit slow in the middle, but only because
you have to move us along to the next plot point. There are still a few
scary moments for really young kids, and I wish the humor was more
throughout but I get why he has to go dark....

The end sequence with the kid, makes you feel great, and you leave feeling
like he is back.....

Male:
I think they should add back in the text "One Year Later." It was on the
last version that we saw. I know they used the news-headlines to show the
transition, but the addition of the text really emphasizes just how much
time has passed since Peter and Gwen have spoken.

Also both characters are essentially motivated by family.
> Second I was thinking about the iconic rivalry btw Ock and Spidey and I think it would be great if after Spidey helps Ock, And you really feel they are friends and want them to be on the same side Ock has to do something that makes Spidey and the audience realize that they will never be able to be on the same side again...b/c the birth of doc Ock story is only complete if you end it with the establishment of the iconic Spidey rivalry.
