I love people that keep trying to make excuses for Speed Racer failing so bad, time of release, marketing, high gas prices, maybe people just weren't interested. We've had three out of the four big budget movies open big in May (two were huge openings), people were obviously going to the movies, Speed Racer just didn't connect with audiences.
I didn't even make some outlandish excuse for
Speed Racer failing. If you see a few posts up, I clearly state why the film failed. However, I fail to see how you can deny
Iron Man and
Prince Caspian in terms of the money made.
Iron Man had amazing reviews, and it had major appeal to the audiences. The money and reputation that it made took away from what
Speed Racer could have made. Any chance of repeating relatively close to 18.5 million for the next week was demolished by
Prince Caspian opening. Like I said in my earlier post, had
Speed Racer appealed to the audience, it should have at least held it's own against
Iron Man. However, it got beaten not only by
Iron Man (landslide second weekend of 50 million) but also
What Happens in Vegas (a romantic-comedy released in the summer that opened in several hundred less theaters, but still averaged more money per theater).
I didn't even like
Speed Racer. I am just stating that had it opened in April or August, it would have made more than 18.5 million on it's opening weekend. The most it would have made on opening weekend (unopposed) would be 35 million at the most, but more than 18.5 million. It still would have bombed at the box office, but not as bad as it's going to now.
