Lights, camera, action.

The visuals in the IMAX theater at the Portage 16 IMAX were so stunning that even a preview of "Spiderman 3" garnered applause on Friday evening.

Customers quickly forgot a 25-minute wait in line for tickets as they settled into the plush seats for the 7:10 p.m. showing of "Night at the Museum."

Some aspects of the new theater are unfinished, such as the tile in the lobby, but manager Kevin Morgan said opening night was relatively smooth.

"A few computer glitches here and there and some cosmetic things to finish -- overall, we're in good shape. We sold out the IMAX first show and every screen is running," Morgan said.

Portage 9 showed its final films Thursday evening, passing the torch to Portage 16 IMAX.

The 70,000-square-foot theater has 15 standard 35mm screens, one IMAX theater and a five-story atrium lobby.

The second-floor balcony is accessible, but only as an exit from the IMAX theater. Morgan said an elevator is scheduled to be delivered Wednesday, and then the flight simulator, games and satellite concession stand will open.

The theater opens its matinee schedule at 10 a.m. today. "Happy Feet" premiers at 12:10 p.m. at the IMAX theater and five showings of "Night at the Museum" will follow.

Portage residents Angela Mills, 17, Colleen Moran, 16, Katie Thomason, 16, and Larry Riffett, 17, were huddled in an orange blanket in the line that snaked outside the theater.

"I saw it in IMAX in New York and it was so good," Mills said.

Riffett works at the concessions stand and as an usher, but he was off Friday night.

"When I first came, they were putting up the screen," Riffett said. "We've been cleaning theaters, putting games in. This is like our third opening date -- they were originally supposed to open in November -- so I think we had to open now."

South Haven Courtney Hager was avoiding the IMAX, setting her sights on "Primeval." Her reasons to join the throng of moviegoers was simple:

"I have a baby sitter," Hager said.

Morgan was manned with a walkie-talkie and darted off to solve problems big and small throughout the night.

The thought did cross his mind that the theaters wouldn't be able to open as scheduled, but the staff worked hard to pull it off.

"I tell you what, we've got a good, solid staff and these kids for the past week, every minute after school they've been coming and doing what needs to be done and just really taking care of us," Morgan said.

I can't speak for every IMAX theatre but I know in some cases (including the cinema where i work, which shall remain un-named) the film will have FORTY MINUTES of 3D scenes.

I don't know if this old news but I thought i'd chime in.

Yes! 3D! I was really hoping this was the case. I saw Superman Retuns this way.

I'm there , actually I'm in line already

Its fantastic news, when we had night at the museum on imax we had the spidey 3 teaser with it, it was amazing to see on a screen that size!

Spider-Man 3 will have 3D footage like SR did?

And how big is an Imax screen?

I think all cities with an IMAX theatre will show the movie. At least those with the usual "flat screens " as opposed to the circular screens , will show the movie.
Almost all countires now have the flat screen IMAX theatres. If you really want to check out if you're city has the proper IMAX theatre , just go to their website and see for yourself : http://www.imax.com/ImaxWeb/welcome.do?param_action=skip
