Playstation Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 3

Instead of getting suit powers, I wish each suit would actually change the gameplay in minor ways. For example, instead of being a suit power, Spider-Punks guitar should have been used during his finishers. Kaine's suit should have added his stinger to the combat, changing combos up a bit and maybe the Iron Spider suit would extend its mechanical legs, when you reach a combo count of 50+, giving you an extra oomph during combat, until you drop your combo. I just don't really like suit powers having to be manually activated and then you have to wait again until the super meter fills. Overall most of the suit powers should have been passives in my opinion. Like Spider-Noir making you harder to detect allowing for easier stealth, instead of being a power that needs to be activated.

I'd rather activate the iron arms manually instead of waiting for a 50 hit combo. When you lower yourself upside down from the ceiling in front of a group of guys, and then extend the iron arms, it looks bad as ****.

Speaking of suit powers, did anyone notice that the 'equaliser' suit power also affects drones? Meaning your drones can also take down enemies in a single hit. Clears a room in seconds.

I agree. Making MJ more like her 616 counterpart would have been ideal. Too bad they turned her into a Carlie Cooper esque character. And I would have loved to see Spider-Man working with Robbie.

I don't know Carlie Cooper, but I've heard many people make comparisons to Lois Lane. A journalist who works at the same news paper as the hero, and is also his love interest, and who constantly puts herself in danger to pursue a story. That's Lois Lane. This version of MJ sucks so hard.

Thing is, I grew up with Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor. The absence of strong female characters hasn't been an issue for 30 years. When I see writers like Slott making these two dimensional 'strong women' characters, it's just insulting. There's nothing revolutionary about it, it's just transparent, hokey overcompensation.

"And I would have loved to see Spider-Man working with Robbie."

I've always liked Robbie. He's one of Spider-man's best friends. They could have tied him into the Tombstone side mission, since tombstone and Robbie grew up together. From wiki: Robertson was one of the first black characters in comics to play a serious supporting role.

About the 1st DLC

I love the overall story about Peter but the whole Felicia and her father multiple times putting one over on him and it appears more so through his history just seems annoying. I guess I've played too much Batman where in the end, Batman gets the upper hand.

I like these ideas

Yeah, building passive abilities into the suit would have been a much better way to go. That's what I thought it would be...but nope. Activating them was also weird. I set them off on accident all the time, but for some reason had trouble activating them when I meant to.

Maybe we should make a list with suit passives and pester Insomniac with it. That's definitely a change I want to see for Spider-Man 2. I don't mind suit powers, but they should be different from suit passives. Didn't Spider-Man on the PS1 have suit with different passives? Like the symbiote suit giving you unlimited webbing, Captain Universe Spider-Man was basically god mode because it made you immortal, Spider-Man Unlimited gave you invisibility that you could toggle on and off. That stuff needs to make a comeback.

I get the Lois Lane comparisons but the reason I compared this MJ to Carlie Cooper is because they have similar characteristics and it's another Spider-Man supporting character. We were constantly being told that Carlie was great for Peter but never actually shown it. Long story short she is an insufferable character that for some reason Peter is interested in. That also probably had to do with how Peter was written at the time...spineless. Either way, this version of MJ is lacking. 616 MJ is far superior and it makes me miss her even more.

I like the idea of having passive suit powers but some things would definitely have to change. For example, the Electric Punch and Concussion strike...while I really enjoy both of those, I wouldn't want them to be active the whole time I'm using whatever suit they're attached to. I kind of like how it's only on for a brief period of time. But I do like the idea of making the Noir suit give you better stealth.

There are already passive suit powers in the game. They're called suit mods. Insomniac could come up with some better suit mods, such as alternate finishers, but I don't want them to get rid of the activated suit powers.

Edit: Oh, UltimateWebhead already pointed this out.

When it comes to improving combat, there are a couple things that I think are obvious.
*Increased dodge distance: There are times when I want the dodge move to cover a larger distance. They could allow you to do a 'large dodge' by holding down R2 when you hit circle. This could allow you to do a directional handspring that covers twice the distance of a standard dodge.
*Heavy attack: Holding R2 when you attack should activate a heavy attack that consumes some of your focus bar. The heavy attack would knock light enemies over in a single hit. It could also be used to hit multiple enemies at once if they are standing close together.
*Long range web-pull: The web pull move is useless from a distance, as it only pulls enemies a few feet towards you. When used from a large distance, the webpull should pull enemies closer to you, perhaps knocking them over.
*Short range webthrow: When standing right next to a throwable object, I think there should be a separate animation, where Spider-man throws the object using his hands. When you pull the trunk off a car to rescue a hostage, you swing it around and knock pedestrians over. They should fix this.

I highly recommend changing button taps to button hold from the options menu. For example the spin cycle attack becomes just holding triangle with a webbed enemy, and knocking a guy in the air for a swing kick is just square hold > square hold

That's way too automatic for me. Slightly takes the fun away.

Beat the game yesterday. Really enjoyed it throughout. Didn't finish all the thug crimes but beat everything else... aside from getting Gold on the Taskmaster's challenges. I'm just not that good of a gamer.

Story was pretty solid. I feel it started to get really good and then ended. Little slow in the beginning. Really didn't enjoy the MJ/Miles levels though.

Also were they teasing
Harry had the symbiote?

I played the DLC and I liked it, specially with the villain cliffhanger. With one of the chapters being named "Silver Lining", I think there's a chance we'll get Silver Mane to be part of theses gang wars.

I agree about the comments regarding MJ. I already had a distaste for what they did to her in the main story - that's not the fun MJ I know at all - and this DLC made it worse. Peter really could come off as being less affraid of her.

Black Cat was spot on and I really like her dynamic with Peter, which only makes the Peter/MJ relationship look worse. There was a good enough amount of content and it made me anticipate the next chapter even more, too bad it's gonna take another month.

I didn't think these chapters would be interconnected, though. But instead, each with their contained story. I'm fine either way.

I'm replaying the part where MJ sneaks into Norman's penthouse. I cant believe the guys at Insomniac approved these missions. They are insultingly stupid.
There is no way that an expensive high tech security taskforce is this incompetent, that some chick tossing chirping devices can stealth through all of them. If someone threw a sound emmiting disk from behind my couch that im directly looking at, i would check behind the couch first. I have no training in anything. I'm guessing someone in privatized security might at least do the same

Credit where its due. The Spiderman gameplay is very good. The Doc Ock story is great. But these MJ stealth missions show that maybe Insomniac is just a little out of touch. Like they had to be told by fans that we prefer fast web swinging

The worst part of the story is when Peter had to learn that MJ is more capable than he thinks. But the only reason she is succesful in her missions because they defy common sense. In the part where MJ, Miles and May are trapped in a burning building, MJ (on the phone) tells SPIDERMAN "Dont be crazy, wait for help". Um, what? They cant be serious with this writing

You know what female character I would much rather play as? Yuri Watanabe! She is at least somewhat plausibly capable of dangerous field work, and honestly a much better character anyway

Yeah, the game definitely needed more Yuri, less MJ.

Yeah the MJ and Miles missions were the 'low' points for me. Not bad, just not particularly enjoyable.

This is a very agreeable post.

Insomniac imo really missed the mark by not making Black Cat a playable character. I understand the possible comparisons to Catwoman and the Arkham series but I really could care less about that. She's different enough from Spider-Man that the gameplay would have been enjoyable and imo it would have been pretty cool to have her in side missions where you get to do some stealth and thievery.

Yeah, the game definitely needed more Yuri, less MJ.

More anyone over this version of MJ. Her characterization is severely lacking and her gameplay is uninteresting and boring. I was hoping pregame release that wouldn't be the case but unfortunately it was mostly garbage forgettable stuff.

The only one of the MJ/Miles things I liked was Miles avoiding Rhino. Everything else was pretty ****ty.

I actually liked most of the Miles missions but yes the Rhino escape was really the high point and pretty cool. It had the right amount of tension.

I still thought the MJ at the museum mission was good. For the story it made sense and it was fun having her work with Spidey. There was enough tension there that it was at least exciting for me anyway and defusing that bomb was cool. But yeah, the rest of her missions are without a doubt the biggest drawback in the game. Sucks cause I love MJ. Too bad we didn't get a better adaptation.

The game is pretty slow until the Sinister 6 breaks out. I wish we had gotten more interaction with the villains besides just the boss fights. Similar to how we fought Shocker twice, would have been nice to fight Scorpion 1 on 1 before the team-ups.

I just hope they are not going to keep increasing Spidey's reliance on MJ. It already feels like this DLC is slightly suffering from the CW syndrome, with the main protagonist being too inept to do his job, so he has to rely on his supporting cast to come up solutions, ideas and plans.

For example, why did Spidey have to rely on MJ to find information on the thumb drive hidden in the painting? She is going to investigate, while Spidey is basically twiddling his thumbs, until he hears from MJ again. Instead of finding one of the Hammerhead thugs himself to interrogate. Isn't this Spidey supposed to be experienced? You'd think after 8 years on the job, he'd know how to get information out of criminals. Heck, the first step could have been to locate where Hammerhead hangs out nowadays and instead of an MJ sneak Mission, it could have been be a Spidey sneak mission, as we go through Hammerhead's office and computer, to find out what Hammerhead is looking for.

Also, wouldn't it be highly suspicious and put her in danger, when MJ starts to ask people about thumb drives she should have no knowledge of? I didn't care much for MJ in the main game, but in the DLC it feels like they really had to crowbar her in.
