Your all getting the idea wrong...i personally, loved the first POTC, but in the second i just found myself thinking "This is a mess of unnecessary scenes and side-plots and how hte heck are they going to resolve this at the end" half of which didnt even get solved and left me confused...

The problem is you went into the second one thinking it would resolve itself at the end where people like me already knew it wouldn't because of the cliffhanger ending.

You really have to expect this type of stuff with films that are shot back to back. Matrix, Back to the Future and LOTR's all did this. The filmakers knew from the start they'd be making more than one at a time and they knew they could have a much larger storyline that they could split in two. Yes, the second POTC can be described as a bunch of setups because that's what it was intended to be. Even though Empire and Jedi weren't shot back to back it can be argued that Empire was just a series of setups to be resolved in Jedi. The same could be said for the new trilogy as well.

In this day in age if any filmaker or studio thinks there's a chance the film could be made into a franchise their going to leave the ending fairly open for sequels.

It's rare that films that fall into this catagory anymore ever wrap themselves up completely at the end.

You know one thing that confussed me with POTC 2 when I saw it was how the heck was the monkey still cursed? I didn't find out until after I got online that night that there was a hidden scene at the end of one that showed the monkey steal a gold coin....which basically caused him to be cursed again!

So maybe I can help if there's some things that confused you that might help change your mind a little about the overall film itself?

Aquaman in Entourage was directed by James Cameron, and it broke spidey record.

^POTC 2 was a great film and the best of the year easily. I think SM3 will break records again but have tough competition with POTC 3.

I TOTALLY AGREE! :)

i also agree. i loved pirates2, and am eagerly awaiting the 3rd one as much as i'm spidey

There was a scene of that?! Could you find it cause i kinda would like to see that.

POTC 2 did $18 million on friday WOW

Man i don't think SM3 will be able to match that :( :(

Also I am sure SM 3will break the opening weekend of POTC 2 but i don't see it beating POTC 2 total boxoffice domestically DAMN

Man we all spider-man fans have to do something to WOW the entire world at spidey 3 boxoffice

POTC3 and Shrek3 are not locks to retake the weekend crown.
Using IMDB ratings

HP1-7.2
HP2-7.3
HP3-7.8
HP4-7.8 (It will eventually drop below 3)

Opening Weekends

HP1-$88.36m
HP2-$90.29m
HP3-$93.69m
HP4-$102.69m

Where was the big jump? When the previous movie was much better than the others. Three was great and 4 got the benefit of it in its opening.

SM-7.4 no ranking on Yahoo
SM2-7.8 ranked 38th on Yahoo all-time

POTC-8.0 ranked 9th on Yahoo all-time
POTC2-7.7 and falling, ranked 24nd all-time and falling

Shrek-8.0 ranked 29th all-time on Yahoo
Shrek2-7.7 no ranking on Yahoo

Shrek and POTC will be coming out after the previous movie was not as liked as the original.

Xmen-7.3
Xmen2-7.9
Xmen 3-7.0

FOTR-8.8
TT-8.7
ROTK-9.0

These series had better and better openings, because the previous movie was better than the one before or at least as good.

These series did not, hitting a snag on the second outing..

Back to the Future
1-8.1
2-7.1
3-6.7

OW
2-$27.84m (this was very close to what Indiana Jones 3 did when it broke the record 6 months earliers, before Batman blew it out of the water
3-$19.1m

Matrix
1-8.6
2-7.0
3-6.3

OW
2-$91.77m (would have had the weekend record if it opened on a Friday)
3-$27.89m

So in conclusion. SM3 will have the hype and anticipation, POTC won't. Shrek3 should be ok, because Shrek2 was only slightly weaker, I expect POTC2 to fall at least to the 7.2-7.3 range. I don't see either taking the crown from SM3 if it gets it.

AMAZING post someone wrote on worldofkj.com

Proves it that SM3 will destroy POTC2 and POTC 3 and shrek 3 won't break the record SM3 will set.

It's kind of hard to say because Spider-Man 2 only made 88 mil opening weekend...can't say that that means it will be the same for Spidey 3, but I don't expect it to beat out Pirates.

88 mil opening weekend because Spider-man 2 opened on like a Wednesday so a large portion of Spider-man 's biggest fans had already seen it before the weekend even got there , Spider-man 2 had already made 64 mil before that first weekend , so it's "conceivable" that if Spider-man 2 had waited till Friday to open it would have made close to 152 mil it's first weekend

potc2's is going to break all kinds of records.

spidey 3 has a chance at the opening records but that is very slim.

the kind of monday potc2 just had is mind blowing.

Had Sony released SM2 on a FRIDAY, it would have zoomed passed SM1 opening weekend, not sure domestically total, but opening weekend for sure. They've got their great opening weekend, first big movie of the summer spot and VENOM to boot. It's gonna be a big one. Don't know if it's gonna break records, but it's gonna be HUGE!

I have a feeling spidey 3 won't even come close to the FIRST Spider-man movie, let alone POTC. I say Spidey 3 does a Superman like performance. I've noticed other then the people on this board, after the trailer was released, there was really no Juice from regular folk.
you're obviously not very perceptive because if you were, you'd see it's among the most actively searched and discussed films not yet released.

now think about that, and remember that it's 1 year away.

exactly.

$40 million opening on a wednesday can reasonably equate to $50+ million opening on a friday.

It won't do a Superman Return , that movie was just long and boring , I'm guessing more like a X-Men Last Stand

a SR type?

that movie won't even cross $200 million.

spidey 3 is as close to a $300 million guarantee as you can find in the industry.

some of you people are hysterical. Do you honestly think it's sony's priority to be breaking records? Think again.:o
Breaking records is merely a bonus, whereas the true accolade resides in the amount of money made, that right there is priority.

Most likely POTC2 will make $850-950m in worldwide with $370-400m domesticly.
