Star Trek: General Discussion Part 2

James Doohan and DeForest Kelley were both featured in TNG episodes. Mark Lenard also reprised the role of Sarek multiple times on TNG.

"I don't see no points on your ears, boy, but you sound like a Vulcan."
"No, sir. I am an android."
"Hmph. Almost as bad."

I think one of the best thing Abrams' ST movie did was to rejuvenate our interest in this universe again. Now I have the urge to rewatch some of the old movies once more, esp. ones featured the TOS crew. Reboots don't always work, but this one is definitely a homerun.

Watching DS9 and seeing all the TNG characters making appearances I have to wonder.
Why have NONE of the TOS crew (save Nimoy in that TNG episode and George Takei in one episode of Voyager) EVER made guest appearances in the later Trek shows.

There is an episode of DS9 called "If Wishes Were Horses" where the holo suite's mess up and everyone's "Imagination" comes to life. Yo mean to tell me that O'Brien never wanted to meet the legendary Montgomery Scott? Or Sisko meeting Kirk?

Is it the fact that all the actors would have demanded insane amounts of cash to have a at best a 5 minute appearance in one of these shows?

The only TOS of any note to not make a "next generation" appearance was Shatner (Uhura, Chekov: who-ura cares-ov).

I remember that they tried earnestly to get Shatner to make an appearance in nearly all the post-TOS shows, but Shatner didn't want to do it. I don't think it was even about money, just that his role wouldn't be significant enough. He's like what Hulk Hogan is to wrestling; every time they want to bring him back, he insists on so much creative control and being the f#$@ing star of the universe, forgetting that he's old, slow and broken down. And I love Shatner too, by the way, as I say this.

Agreed

They redid Trouble With Tribbles on DS9 and inserted modern cast members into the show. They even hired the Klingon who was posing as a human in the old TOS episode for the present time period.

:ST: :ST: :ST:

My favorite part of that episode was the DS9 crew finding the Klingon in the 'old' makeup and a clearly embarrassed Worf explaining that they don't explain why Klingons don't look like that anymore. :oldrazz:

So what did you think of the commentary?

I know this is kind of random....but is it just me....or does J.J. Arbams look like the younger Carl from Pixar's "UP"

Kirk ;) lol, also SHH needs to make some TOS Delta smiles :)

Exclusive: Read The Star Trek 2009 Scene Written For William Shatner:

:)

Interesting. I think it could have worked, although perhaps some of Old Kirk's dialogue there could be cut down a bit.

If Shatner did turn this down because it's a "cameo," then I have to see he was foolish to do so. He needs to understand that while Jim Kirk was a character that he created, he's much too old now to continue to play the role effectively, other than in a capacity like the one in this scene. Add that to the fact that Abrams was attempting to keep previous continuity intact, there was essentially no way to bring Old Kirk into the story because we've already seen him die.

Not only that, Shatner now has pretty much been a parody. I mean he's awesome, but if he showed up on the screen, you know there would of been some giggling. I mean I think of Shatner as the Priceline guy now.

Though that scene was well written, it could of worked, if it hadn't been for him dying.

Like death could hold Kirk down. He's already been brought back in the books.

You just know the fans who hated his death would absolutely love for him to be shown alive.

And therein lies the other problem. No one involved with Star Trek is more polarizing than him. And whereas I always enjoyed his performances as Kirk (except in Generations... oh, how I hate that movie), many people who have been turned off of Trek cite him as the reason. I think that those people, for the most part, just picked him as the scapegoat for something that they probably weren't going to give a chance anyway. But for Star Trek to be relaunched successfully (i.e. appealing to more than the Trekkies), it was necessary to establish that this film was a departure from the previous, while still respectful of the past.

The Shatner appearance would have damaged the movie and taken audiences out of it.

Yeah, I do agree there and That-Guy's post.

I think in the end, you couldn't have that many reminders of the other universe. One was enough. And Nimoy is a powerful enough actor/character to show. And he doesn't stroke his ego like Shatner does as much as I love the guy.

Though Shatner reading Sarah Palin's speeches like poetry on Conan are legendary.

I'm not sure how he could even pass for the age he would have been playing. His head has ballooned up so much.

Agreed. I mean, Leonard Nimoy is so rarely seen that when he shows up places, he just radiates badassery. Shatner.... not so much.

I just don't want the image of Chris Pine's Kirk becoming Shatner's bloated version. I'd like Kirk to be badass well into old age.

Doesn't George Takei despise Shatner?
