Star Trek Into Darkness - Part 3

In those deleted scenes his name was George, after their father. I don't know why they changed it.

Maybe in case they wanted to use the character in any of the sequels, they didn't want to be tied down to that shot so they changed it to his friend and not his brother.

My most anticipated movie of this year, followed by Ironman 3 and The Hobbit part 2.

This is my second most anticipated movie of this year, right behind "Man of Steel".

This draws as my most anticipated movie with Pacific Rim.

By the way, I keep hearing Uhura was the forth in command. I assume third was Dr Bones?

So its...

1. Kirk
2. Spock
3. ????
4. Uhura

I was already planning on seeing The Hobbit in IMAX 3D, so this is a nice added bonus. Though i do think 9 minutes is a tad excessive i will check it out because it's not often that we get previews like this shipped over here.

This is also my second anticipated film behind "Pacific Rim"; del Tor's homage to all the classic Godzilla films. :)

Bones was never meant to have command ability. In the original series and films it was Kirk, Spock, Scotty and then usually Sulu. Kirk never told Bones or Uhura "you have the bridge".

So I finally got to see the prologue. Loved it. I finally understand why Kirk gets kicked out of Starfleet. The Enterprise is hiding underwater because they cant let the primitive natives see it. Spock says it will upset the natives natural evolution. Im assuming he means their cultural evolution which is in violation of the prime directive. Kirk has to move the Enterprise out of the water to save Spock thus revealing the ship to the natives which breaks the prime directive. Its also interesting that Kirk asks McCoy what Spock would do if Kirk was trapped in the volcano and he (spock) had to break the prime directive to save him (kirk) to which McCoy responds "He would let you die." Spock hears him say this and then has this curious look on his face. I am betting Spock ends up saving kirk at the end of the movie and proves McCoy wrong.

Like TNG, it depends on the situation. Most likely, Bones is truly third-in-command based purely on rank, but it's impractical and not in the ship's best interests for him to take the bridge when Captain Kirk and Spock beam out. Likewise for Scotty as well. Like on the Enterprise-D, Crusher technically has the same rank as Riker, but it's not practical for her to command the bridge unless something very serious happens (i.e. a Borg commando war).

Based on the movie, it seems Sulu was third in command on the bridge. I don't see them taking Scotty out of engineering for that, though he likely outranks Sulu.

It's hard to draw a parallel to our current military world, as the captain of a navy destroyer doesn't leave the ship on a regular basis during a mission to go nail some chick with a tail.

Agree. You can hold the same rank as someone through rising through the ranks but experience is a different matter. Beverley was a Commander by rank, but I think she might've only had the command seat once in TNG (except for the alternate future where she was a captain of her own vessel). Simply by virtue of the fact that she specialises in medicine, she will have more experience in that and less in the captain's chair.

Deanna Troi took the bridge officer's examination in Season 7 and was also promoted to Commander, but just because she took the exam, that doesn't suddenly make her the person you'd most trust in one of these situations. Data (whom she then outranked) still probably had more experience in the chair, having been entrusted it in the past.

There was that TNG episode "Disaster" where Troi was the highest ranking officer on the bridge (before she took the test) and she also had Miles O'Brien and Ensign Ro with her. However, Troi still wasn't experienced in command duties, but fortunately made the right choice not to separate the saucer and leave the others behind (which Ro was wanting to do).

Not sure what McCoy's rank was in the original series. I thought it was something like Lt Commander, which was what Scotty's was also. I know Spock was Lt Commander in the early episodes but was later Commander. In the movies, Scotty didn't spend much time in command unlike the series. I think things had changed then and he specialised more in engineering because that's where he was needed. All the engineers in later series never took command like Scotty in the original series.

I've never seen that episode "Disaster." Sounds interesting.

Bones is a Med officer. He was just more in authority in name only because he was so buddy buddy with Kirk and Spock.

It is pretty interesting. All the crew are separated into different sections of the Enterprise during a disaster, and several of them are in fish-out-of-water situations: Troi with her inexperience on the bridge while Ro is badgering her in the background; An injured Picard stuck in a turbo lift with 3 scared children and having to learn to relate to them; Worf delivering Keiko's baby having only taken a brief holodeck simulation course on the subject.

Don't forget Riker's dilemma: he has to go several hours without eating.

The best part. :hehe:

Thanks guys.

You know how Joss Whedon is really great with relationships? Which characters would you like to see have a character driven moment with that we haven't already seen?

I would like to see ...

1. Commander Pike and Uhura discuss Uhura's professionalism and her future

2. Spock and Bones. We haven't seen enough of this relationship yet

3. Checkhov and Sulu. They're similar in age and I reckon Cho and Yeltchin had a lot of fun on set similar to Portman and Dennings on Thor (Boy I bet they wish they were on Thor!)

Isn't Sulu fairly older than Checkov?

Nah not that I'm aware of. Not in the movie version at least. I could be wrong though

Already signed and I rushed back to the hype hoping to hear a good response!

Still waiting :csad:

Hey do you think Star Fleet would make hijaab uniforms? Or would that be part of the religion-free future?

Isn't that pretty much what Kirk was wearing for a majority of the first movie?

I wanted to see Kirk in a yellow shirt for most of this movie, not more black shirt.

According to what I have been able to find, Sulu was born in 2237 and Chekov in 2245

So yep, Sulu is 8 years older than Chekov. Which makes sense seeing as how Chekov is an ensign and Sulu a lieutenant. There are also several references early on in TOS`s second season about Chekov being a "bit green"

With regards to the actors in the reboot, Cho is around 16 years older than Yelchin.
