Star Trek Into Darkness - Part 3

The plot, based on what I've read about the movie, sounds like it'll be like this.

John Harrison approaches a Starfleet officer and his wife in a children's hospital in London and offers to cure their dying daughter with illegal genetic therapy if the father helps him infiltrate Starfleet. The father accepts.

Meanwhile, the Enterprise is in Nibiru. Spock gets trapped in the volcano, and although it violates the Prime Directive, Kirk rescues him, and is ordered back to Earth by the Starfleet command.

Harrison uses his knowledge of the Starfleet codes and causes a terrorist attack in London. The Enterprise intervenes and Kirk captures Harrison, but Harrison manipulates Kirk into taking him to Starfleet headquarters in San Francisco, where Harrison escapes and cripples the Starfleet before fleeing to the Klingon world, Qo'nos.

Kirk is stripped of his command, but wants revenge against the Harrison and rallies his crew on a unsanctioned mission to the Klingon zone to get Harrison before he executes his big plan. Dr. Carol Marcus joins them and uses her advanced technology to stop Harrison's big plan to destroy the Klingons. I'm still betting on Harrison's Section 31 backstory.

God, Lindelof is so full of s**t. I can't stand reading anything he says.

This just sounds like the plot to Skyfall:

"In Benedict Cumberbatch we have a much more emotionally and intellectually challenging villain than we had in the last film. Eric Bana did a great job, but Nero was a much simpler, raving sort of furious dude. The first movie was an origin story. The characters were all new to each other, so all they needed was a scary threat to face. It didn't need to be complex or nuanced. Just by default, given the number of characters and the structure of it, we could only go so deep. By necessity, it had to stop at a certain level. It had a ceiling. And now there is no ceiling. He was within Starfleet and has now turned against the organisation and is hell-bent on revenge. He's responsible for a very violent, horrific attack in London and then one in the States. He believes he and others were wronged and is focused on destruction. He's an incredibly brilliant strategist who is aware of various truths that Kirk is not privy to."

Similar villain as Skyfall but I would expect more backstory.

Seems to me they are pushing the villain too much as a selling point. It's like the rest of the crew doesn't really exist.

They know the fanboys got Cumberbatch fever.

I just read on IMDb that the costume designer for both of JJ's ST movies did the same for Blade Runner. That's kind of awesome. :o:up:

They thought about having him for a cameo in Abram's first ST film, but decided against it.

Why would they need to sell the crew? We know the crew. They sell themselves. This film has to present something new other than just the crew and considering they have a ready built mystery with the villain he is the best selling point.

Some people complained Star Trek 09 didn't have a strong enough villain so perhaps they are putting more emphasis on the villain in this movie but like Marvolo said audiences don't need to be sold on the new crew.

If people didn't like the crew in the first movie they probably won't be seeing the sequel anyway.

But lots of people are gonna be watching this just because of the dude who plays the villain...

I think they had written Shatner in as flashback only thing (for the older Spock presumably) and felt it was just there for the sake of being there rather than having any benefit to the story. Shatner said he would have been up for a cameo, but they never contacted him so that was that.

A good villain can make a huge difference so I don't blame them for playing him up with the trailers and so on. WOK is considered by many (me included) as the best of the original crew films, and that's in no small part due to Khan (and Montalban's vengeance bent performance in the role). Funny thing is Kirk and Khan never even meet in person at all during the film (they share a couple of exchanges on the view-screen only).

Well...That didn't exactly hurt The Dark Knight :cwink:

He didn't want just a cameo. He wanted to share Spock's major role with giving advice to the younger Spock (or in his case, to the younger Kirk) and wanted Abrams to canonise the novels where the Borg resurrected him. However, Abrams felt that it would then shift the focus onto Shatner instead of the new crew.

That's really awesome of them. Such a shame about that poor fan. :(

Thats very sweet if he gets to see it, hope its a nicely finished version or close to finished.

Okay...I am so confused. What is this obsession with cumberbatch and where did it come from? I never heard of him until he was announced as the new star trek villain. Is this just a hype thing?

Everyone loves him from Sherlock. The average person has no idea who he is. Personally I like him though he is definitely not the reason I will be seeing this, not even close.
