State Your Opinion on A Character - Part 1

I love Supergirl, the innocent Pre-Crisis little girl Supergirl that Jerry Siegel wrote as his daughter, Laura most of all. It was horses and princes and centaurs and Brainiac 5 built the time bubble just because he had a crush on her. It was insanely girly and Supergirl was Dorothy and Alice with super-powers, sweetness and innocence personified. A lot of my childhood favorites-Dorothy, Supergirl, Mary Marvel-were these types of characters. The most recent version before the DCnU reboot started off kinda poorly but her book got better and better and by the last few storylines with Bizarrogirl, the book had became my favorite DC title.

The other versions of Supergirl over the years were never as personally important to me as Kara, but I still liked them and I didn't blame those characters for what DC did to Kara.

If I don't give up and quit collecting, Supergirl will always be a title that I buy.

:)

That's why I love Supergirl

Is that true that Jerry Siegel based her on his daughter. If it is that's the most adorable thing I've ever heard

I liked Matrix. Haven't really been interested in any other Supergirls.

Yeah, Otto Binder actually created her (he created Mary Marvel as well), but when Siegel wrote Supergirl stories he wrote them from what his daughter was interested in.

What happened with Otto Binder and his daughter, Mary, is one of the saddest stories in the history of comics:

Film producer Michael Uslan described his friendship with the Binder family and the tragedy that altered their lives in the 1960s:

Bobby Klein and I, we probably felt like kids sitting around a campfire and having a camp counselor just pull us in with the greatest stories ever. It was like being at the feet of your grandfather as he told stories of the family. And the greatest advantage for me at age 13 or 14 was that here was a guy who had the most beautiful blonde of a daughter in the world, who was about my age, though she seemed a lot older, who didn’t look at Bobby and me as geeky comic book nerds. His daughter was Mary, and she was named after Mary Marvel. Her dad and her uncle were in the comic book business, and she even corrected me once, when I said Otto wrote Captain Marvel. She said, “No, it was Captain Marvel Adventures. I remember saying, "Oh, boy, this is the girl I’m going to marry. A girl who knows comics. This is great!" It was a wonderful family. His wife, Ione, was a wonderful, warm hospitable woman as well. Mary and I never dated. I was too shy, too in awe of her to ask her out, are you kidding? By the time we were 16, there was a terrible, terrible tragedy. Mary was getting ready to go into school one morning, and a car jumped the curb, and went into the driveway in front of the school and killed her. Otto never recovered. His wife never recovered. She had a breakdown, and Otto started drinking, and eventually he dropped dead of a heart attack. And the three of them were gone, like in a flash.

Never cared for Supergirl and never really will. I prefer Superman being the only Kryptonian. Powergirl was an exception but that is largely due to the fact that she wasn't under his shadow of being "Superwoman" or something instead. Plus she was, before, from the other Earth. So that was an extreme exception.

I do like her redesign, and the art from issue 1 looked beautiful. But I can't bring myself to read her title and care.

That is just such a sad story :csad: What a horrible thing to happen to such a lovely and wonderful family. What a horrible waste :csad:

That just makes me even angrier about the stupid treatment of Mary Marvel and the Marvel family by DC lately

I loves you 'Nubsy

Supergilr sucks. i very rarely like offshoots of established heroes. It always seem to me to be Hey! they like this person so lets do a cross- gendered version of them! So we can sell some books and make more money!" very few have stepped out of the long shadow cast by the original to become their own entity (Babara)Batgirl, She-hulk. Supergirl has never to me done that. hence the many incarnation, revamps for her ass!Boo.. she sucks, but she does get points for making out with a horse!! hehe

Love pre-crisis Supergirl before she dies
Not a fan of the second version of her that fell in love with Lex Luthor
Like the new one

Well now thats an awkward moment if i ever saw one... what i want to know is when did *Superman visit Arkansas?! hahahahaha

Disclaimer- Black Vulcan doesnt think that in the country of Arkansas all Cousins marry each other... just that i saw it depicted in the movie "Deliverance."

Cousin marriage is ok where I am, if the married couple are a guy and a girl

I know im one in a few but I loved New Earth Kara when she first arrived and the first 19 issues of her series. Then she got bland until Sterling came along, plus she is what brought me back into comics so I lovers her. Like what the new team seems to be doing with her and how she wont be just the girl version of Superman.

Hahaha so i guess supergirl marrying a farm animal like say a horse is out in you neck of the woods huh Spider haha...but Supes can marry Kara and have a couple of *Super-dueling banjos! i think i will pass on that bro!:cwink:

Man! Supergirl has a bit of kinkiness in her Kryptonian self!

* again see 70's flick "Deliverance" which scared the hell outta my ass back then
!

In Comet's defense, he was a centaur at one point, and if you know anything about mythology, centaurs love their sex.

dont worry Spider, my humors does that to alot of people.:cwink: all you need to know is Super girl pre-crisis liked animals a bit too much! She had a full on super -zoo going on!

i know. i know. Sf he was a centaur, but that dont make it any less strange!Especially in the dark, realistic age we live in now. She had a horse that use to ride around with her on top of him!your defense would be overturned!:cwink:

I only know about Black Lightning from the Super Friends. He's alright.

Wow, really? No love for BL?

If anybody woulda been able to write a love letter for the character I'd have figured it woulda been Kuro.

I mean he called the JLA some Jive turkeys when they asked him to join.

Guess we just gotta wait for BlackVulcan to come in and school you suckas. :o

Was that in the 70s ? If so , that's pretty awesome.

Ohhhhhhh he's black y'all. He's black y'all! He's blackity black, and he's black y'all! He's black y'all! He's black y'all! He's blacker than black and he's black y'all! He's blackity black blackity black and oh blacker than black!

But yeah, he's actually not too bad of a character when you get past the hilarity of the name. Isabella seemed to keep him from being too blaxploitation when he created and wrote him. In fact, the 90's series had some of the best covers in comics, and it's a nice gem. BL is a pretty likable guy. The Year One mini was okay, but nothing spectacular.
