ALICIA MASTERS

A character that adds an interesting perspective to stories when she is used well. I was really never into the idea of her and Johhny together, and that turned out to be something that was retconned anyway. She and Ben together makes for a better pairing. I actually don't like the connection with her father all that much, being a villain of the FF. The idea of Ben, somewhat obsessed with his transformation, being in a relationship with a blind woman that "sees" into his soul, is more than enough of a hook for me. Plus that is stuff that can be exploited in many different ways and add interesting complications all by itself without the need for a super powered villain to poke his nose into things. I mean, on the surface it can be a heart warming story of acceptance, but there are other ways of looking at it too, that can yield interesting melodramatics, which are the bread and butter of Marvel comics.

Dig Alicia!!
one could learn alot from a hot sculptress who loves somebody cause she cant see the THE THING they became but can see the great heart they have!
I dig me some Alicia! that's a good girl right there baby!

..and yeah that daughter of "the puppet master" was nonsense! why does ever hero have to be connected to some bad guy!? cant they just be good guys without all the melodrama sometimes??!

The character has been used effectively in recent days. However, he's the kind of character that is so powerful he had to be used in unimpressive ways in the past. I liked his role in Civil War. Even better was his role in Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) run. Maybe a role that's been filled by Purple Man (not just controlling people, but being creepy and rapey at the same time), but it was a logical use of his abilities.

i like the PM just not as Alicia's step dad! his creepy little ass makes a good villian turning people into Pinocchio. only i think he should be a bigger overall villian than a FF one..but hes cool

Alicia is pretty cool. I remember reading the Johnny/Alicia thing and it was stupid. Glad they ditched it but having him instead marry a Skrull was kind of weird. Eh comics, go figure.

Puppet Master is pretty neat. The whole mind control through puppets bit is fairly unique and he certainly looks oddball enough. He's one of those guys the FF can't just beat the hell out of because he's Alicias step-dad and that would make her sad. That and Ben would murdalize anyone who would make her sad.

I'm actually surprised Doctor Doom hasn't taken all of the clay for himself. It's not like he couldn't find a great use for it.

Doom has no use for clay, it is below him to play with childish playthings.

Clay that was powerful enough to take over the mind of Xavier, one of the most powerful telepaths on earth if not the universe? Methinks Doom would at least take a few looks at it and take it all for himself just so no one else could use it against him.

No wonder Matt is so messed up... He was raised by a single father that taught him to be this weird paradox that hides his real intentions, his mother left the family to marry "God" and then there's the whole Catholic thing. As my mother (a Catholic) says, "Sure, Jewish mothers have guilt to motivate their children, but Catholic mothers have guilt AND shame." Matt is a character that you can see the writers since at least Miller are very interested in dissecting his soul. That's right, not mind, but SOUL. Maggie is part and parcel of all that. She's really a player in Matt's drama more than a character in and of herself. Nothing wrong with that, it just doesn't give her too much depth, in m view.

What drove Matt to ask her that question?

You know what? I have completely forgotten. I know it's all part of BORN AGAIN, and it was after he had confronted Fisk, got beat and turned loose stinking of Whiskey and he ends up being taken care of by Maggie. Maybe KevG can remember, or Vulcan.

Honestly, my tolerance for the crap they put Matt/DD through was exhausted A LONG TIME AGO, so all his various tragedies and soul crushing moments ect. all tend to blur at this point. I was a fan up til maybe the late 90's but they just never let up. At this point if Murdock committed suicide it would be kinda understandable, because the angst and torture are so unrelenting.

What I remember from reading Born Again is the question popping out like that, nothing that made her seem more maternal toward him than other nuns would.

I think they did make him commit suicide during the Andy Diggle run, when he was leader of the Hand, Ed Brubaker ended his run on the character by making him lead the ninja clan.

As interesting is DD with his general angst/borderline suicidal thing he has going he really needs a therapist. Obviously going to church isn't doing it for him. I imagine that a SPB therapist that was 100% confidential and immune to telepaths/corrution/whatever Doom has cooking this week would be so over booked he'd need a time machine to see his patients.

Anywho as for DD's mom/Sister Maggie, she really needs to just say she is or isn't just so he will stop going bonkers all the time. If she is, then he has a point of stability in his world and can calm down a bit. If not, fess up, stop making the guy in tights who beats up people at night crazy. He gets that enough at his day job. At the very least he can get one of his Avenger buddies or whoever to get a DNA sample and compare the two just for certainty and his sanitys sake.

From what I remember it had been hinted at for years before that she was his mother and every time he spoke to her he felt something with his abilities but never directly asked her and every time he tried to hint at it she shut him down immediately. I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed she is though.

Edit: She is as per Marvel.

HAhahahahahahaha!
shes okay for someone who would rap your knuckles with a ruler( hey! dont look at me that's what the nuns did in Blues Brothers!) she reminds me of batman's surrogate mother Dr.Thompkins. so she always seemed okay to me but yeah she should really come out and say" MATT..... I AM YOUR MOTHER!!! EMBRACE YOUR DESTINY!" cause as Kevan said that dude is beyond ANGST! holeeee moley!

I can't remember if it was Man Without Fear that explained it, but I thought it had to do with the memory of her visiting him in the hospital (and the gold cross she had).

Yeah, but this was the first real time it happened. Born Again is such a great story that I understand why they've wanted to follow it since then.

But there comes a point of really diminishing returns. I think it's similar to the whole Jean Grey/Phoenix deal. It was a great story that elevated a, frankly, mediocre character. But they've gone to that well so many times! Same with torturing DD and adding, at this point, almost hilarious levels of tragedy and angst. It's gone too far... It was too far 15 years ago. I understand that they are in a different phase right now with the character so maybe there will be some way to reconcile things. I don't know... For myself perhaps old Matt needs to do a like a walk about or world tour for a couple of years. Maybe get him out of the whole urban scene entirely? Imagine he just does the whole Caine in Kung-Fu thing: Just walks the Earth. Go from town to town. Get in adventures. ;) Get him away from Foggy, NYC, Fisk, the Hand, the crime of urban life and travel the highways and byways of the U.S.A. He's still a hero at heart and he'd still help out when needed, but he'd be in unfamiliar territory. The stories wouldn't be mired in the world of law vs vigilante action. Things could be more straightforward, plus, there could be a chance to introduce new villains and other characters. I think the Catholic in Matt would be attracted to the idea that he is doing such a thing as penance, never putting down roots, just drifting from place to place. I don't know... that's just what I would do.

He did do the walking the Earth a few times, he met up with the Inhumans, fought Blackheart (Mephistos kid) and knocked the head off of a crazy Ultron with a stick. Things seem to get weirder for him when he's not in NYC.

See... I must have missed that stuff. All the times I was seriously reading DD he was in NYC, though I liked a few of the O'neil written issues where he went to Japan. But I really don't know much about DD prior to the early 80's stuff and through to about the early Bendis stuff.

JACKIE SHORR
Not related to Alan Shorr, that's for sure.

Oh man... She killed Marlo and was the bat guano crazy foster mother of Rick. I remember that at the time I was happy that Rick, the orphan, had found his birth mom. Then we got to know that she was nuts and she stabs Marlo to death. That was... It was shocking. And heartbreaking... And then... ANNOYING. I love David's run but that was one part I just started liking less and less. After Marlo dies we get this rushed story that ties up some loose ends from the start of David's run with the after math of the Ground Zero story, BOOM, Ross is Alive! Boom, none of Rick's super pals will help him bring Marlo back to life! Boom, Rick is on Leader's side! Boom, Hulk learns Leader has the power over life and death! Boom, Marlo is alive but a vegetable. Boom, Rick keeps Marlo barely alive til she comes out of it. Frankly... I kinda feel that David did that whole story JUST so he could do that lame ass "brush with death" joke in the Marlo/Rick wedding issue. I liked how it started with Jackie, but... Yeah, it went to a place that became tedious to me. My two cents.

Her turning out to be a psycho disappointed me, I really wanted her to be actually his mom.
But she made some great moments.
