In fairness, the original point was to give him a secret identity/alter ego since it was a firmly established comic book trope. But people were confused by the relationship between the two characters and whether Thor was "real" (given the other Asgardians were real, it would make more sense if he was). After that, they explained how Donald Blake was Thor while at the same time not quite being Thor.
As time went on, they began to lose the need to have Donald Blake. Frankly, he's not as interesting as Thor. I do like that Marvel had superhero with professionals as secret identities (such as two lawyers). Once Donald Blake became obsolete, I was sad that there wasn't really a major doctor superhero. Both Dr. Strange and Thor firmly qualify as former doctors at this point.
