Pennywise is very childlike in this scene, in the most unsettling way, something a child wouldn't pick up on as dangerous but an adult would be terrified of. Like the book, once Georgie reaches, pennywises demeanor completely changes.

Right, and that's exactly my point. We only have an image of the scene and haven't seen a shred of footage yet, hence my concern about the portrayal of the character overall. I have hopes that he will have a nice balance and not just be totally creepy and "psychotic" the whole time. A level of innocence is required with the character.

The best way to present him is Malevolent & Innocence and children's natural intrigue will buy into the curiosity value that brings, which is very explicitly written in the novel.

The only innocence displayed in the book was to the younger children and Georgie specifically. When it came to the losers club, he didn't try to entice anyone with innocence, since they all knew something was incredibly off putting about him. So that's what you're dealing with in the movie, pennywise has his evil "I'm gonna eat you" look, but also alot of really great moments of complete mockery, which all are incredibly unsettling. There's a lot of subtlty in bills performance. I can't, and won't get into details, but there's no disappointing aspect as far as pennywise goes, very true to the book.

Gotcha. I haven't read the book since I was in my early teens (now 33) so maybe it's time to revisit it. I was unaware that anyone on these boards had seen the film in it's entirety. I must have missed those posts.

Looking forward to this one, especially Bill's take on Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

Doesn't It WANT children to be afraid? If I remember correctly, It literally feeds on fear.

That brings up a point I was thinking about. Is anyone else worried that this version of Pennywise won't have the necessary innocence to reel in the children?

You know if u really think about it back in the day the it mini series came out nobody considered clowns scary until pennywise was introduced in book and the mini series. Now a days though u have these people going around in clown costume trying to scare people.

I'm a big fan of the cheesy 1990 movie but I definitely think that "It" is a great candidate for a remake or different adaption. It's still going to be very hard to top Tim Curry's memorable performance.

Feel exactly the same. Curry was able to be goofy yet sinister, creepy and scary as hell. It really was a powerhouse performance.

Big shoes to fill. Literally.

Yeah...no.

John Wayne Gacy says hello.

Tim Curry is just an exceptional talent that can do just about anything. Everything about his performance was on-point, though I do think the new Pennywise will manage to be memorable in his own right. Perhaps not to the extent of Curry, but I still expect a show stealing performance nevertheless.

Btw, not to get too off-topic but am I the only one who loves Curry's performance as Darkness in Legend? I bought that movie specifically for him, and it's another film where it's not perfect by any means but his mere presence just steals every scene he's in.

Yup, the Darkness in Legend - another great Curry performance. The look, the voice, everything. And every time I see a picture or him in that AWESOME makeup, it makes me sad coz thats the closest we've come to seeing a decent Mephisto on screen.

That picture is creepy as hell but the thing is Pennywise isn't creepy like that. He's supposed to be alluring to a child, then he becomes full on scary and strikes.

It's pretty much what I expected. On the nose scary.

We don't know for sure that that isn't what's being represented in the photo, though.

Exactly, it's a still picture with no context as to what comes before it. For all we know, that could be after Pennywise changes and he could look more innocent when Georgie first starts speaking to him.

Don't get me wrong, I love Tim Curry's version of Pennywise, but it seems like this movie's version is aiming to stick closer to Pennywise from the book who is more horrifying and creepy throughout than goofy and genuinely clownish like Curry's, admittedly scary and awesome, take.

pennywise was goofy as well, more goofy than I would ever imagine him to be. Example, read the library scene with Richie, off the top of my head, but theres so many better ones where I though it ruined the character for me cause he was just too silly and too clownish

The wolf in sheep's clothing is a recurring motif with King's villains. Pennywise, Randall Flagg, Annie Wilkes, Jack Torrence. All malevolent characters shrouded in some manner of deceptive amiability.

Seriously? I've always thought he was entirely way too goofy. I love Curry, but like most of the TV-Movie, he was underwhelming.

Goddammit, Seth.

That he would respond to a question like that in a teasing sort of way makes me hope it's not far off.

I thought that too, but George has a pretty normal pose there for someone looking at him like that. He looks like he's leaning in. Granted, it's a still photo, but it looks like the regular face with some lighting trickery. When Pennywise is in his eat George face, I think he'll look pretty different.

Is there any WB/ Horror Movies coming out in April? I think if anything it will be on Unforgetable which is a horror/thriller movie.
