Student Hugs Teacher, Gets Suspended and Loses Scholarship

Why is Orson Scott Card allowed to disparage homosexuals and receive money for a blockbuster, while Paula Deen used the 'n' word at some point and loses her job?

He doesn't get anything from it than the money he originally was paid for years ago actually. There are no royalties involved. Still haven't seen the movie though.

She lost her job for more than just disparaging remarks. It was also a blemish on the network who didn't want to be associated with her anymore.

Should we believe a woman every time she accuses someone of sexual harassment?

That should always be a case-by-case determination on the validity of the claim. There are a lot of women who abuse it and use it as tool or weapon against others which only downplays or lessens the believability of the incidents which are true.

None of these cases should be used as an excuse to justify anything though. There will always be people crying wolf for personal gain, attention or to smear the reputation of someone else and they need to be called on it when they attempt it instead of being allowed to dull the real cases that do happen.

OK, I get that he should have warned her or asked her if it was ok to hug her but to me this is another case of how more and more people seem to be becoming more and more PC and a bunch of super sensitive crybabies. I felt she overreacted.

That was excessive. But the kid was warned. Watching the video, the teacher looked disgusted & pissed. Kid came pretty close to copping a feel of her left breast.

I don't think he should be suspended for the rest of the year and all that but its still definitely a problem that needed to be addressed.

Yeah, I could see a some detentions, some after school service (I'm not sure if that school does that, but my high school did), or even an in-school suspension...but a suspension for an entire YEAR...especially when he loses a college scholarship. At the end of the day, was that worth ruining this child's immediate future?

I want one person to say yes to that last bit. I want just one person to do it so he/she can receive an unholy s***storm.

Yup. Bullies get only a couple of days if that; sometimes the bullied gets suspended for a longer time than the bully himself. I swear, the kids getting bullied should say it was done in a sensual way just to get the system to work instead of being told "toughen up, kid".

He was making those comments as far back as 1990. Not that it should have been such a big deal, but then again, neither should Paula Deen's words. Either that or treat them both as severely.

I believe an artist can be a "bad person" but still deliver great art. Terry Goodkind is a lunatic, but 'Sword of Truth' is one of my favorite series.

That's taking it completely out of the era where no one would have complained and expecting a reprisal now. You can't use what he said in 1990 as judgement to the same as him saying it in 2013. The acceptability of what was said has changed in a short amount of time. He hasn't gotten paid anything since he sold the rights years ago.

The least insulting analogy I can think of is that calling Indians "savages" was at one point completely normal. Doing that now is obviously an insult and not acceptable and you'd be rightly called on it.

Paula Deen on the other hand is another case in itself. They're both insulting and degrading but outside of a few details they're not the same.
