Sudan arrests British teacher for naming bear Mohammed

god doesn't have the balls. zues maybe.

She's free, right?? :yay:

A lot of prayers have been going up on her behalf. God worked it out and He uses human channels....always has.

You looking for a lightning bolt or something?
Brilliant.

So Slim makes repetative arguments that the moderates are nowhere to be found and are not speaking out against this mess, all the while being proven so very wrong multiple times in this thread...

...and somehow, when she's finally freed, it had nothing to do with the moderates protesting or speaking out against the injustice: it was Slim's own Christian GOD that freed her, "through human channels."

Narcisism at its best.

and doesn't the phrase "through human channels" imply that god is encroaching on free will? i wonder what else god does when he seemingly inhabits a person's body without asking. i have been waking up in a dumpster alot more the past few weeks.

Oh yeah, we've covered this countless times in the infamous evolution thread a while back. Christians will say that this doesn't encroach on free will, while others will say that free will is simply an illusion.

well, i do agree free will is an illusion whether god exists or not, considering the decisions we make in life are based on our personality and behavior which are inturn born out of nature and nurture. two things we have zero control over. frightening prospect, isn't it! :(

Well yeah. The debate focused mainly on the idea that God truly is omnipotent...if that's the case, how can free will truly exist? It became a circular argument really quickly lol.

infact, it's such a circular argument that it's orbit is starting to "encroach"(:cwink: ) on this very thread! frightening prospect, isn't it! :(

impossible. the G-O-D is too busying making money for megachurches, stumping for republican presidential candidates, helping athletes win sporting events and thinking up new ways to punish us for allowing homosexuality to exist.

I'd like for a lot of prayer to go up on his behalf

I mean, one would think god would have more important stuff to attend to than a single teacher in trouble.
oh, she's white?

nevermind.

do you know how many girls would kill to have a figure like that? god has given that martian enough already!

well, he's snotty anyhow for sticking his tongue out at the camera.

I think you meant "Koran" not the Bible. Bible had absolutely nothing to do with this mess.

I was using the bible as an example, because i was raised Roman Catholic. Be it the Koran, the Torah or what ever. My point stands.

Those people are idiots. Ahh poor people, they are dumb and bored so they call for a woman's head because she asked the class to name a bear. Those people should be ashamed, I'm losing more and more faith in humanity.

uggh, you just reminded me of this one time I helped this woman find her keys. I hand them to her and she says "Thank you, Jesus" Yeah, I'm sure Jesus worked through my own competence to help you find those keys. Dumb broad.:whatever:

Muslim culture tests recommended

Some Sudanese sought a tougher sentence for teacher Gillian Gibbons

Westerners going to live and work in Sudan should pass an exam on the local culture, a Sudanese official has said.
Khalid al Mubarak, media counsellor at London's Sudan embassy, said the orientation courses that were mandatory in the colonial era "worked very well".
He said a two-week course could help people avoid accidental insults.
Teacher Gillian Gibbons has returned to the UK following eight days in custody in Sudan, convicted of insulting Islam after pupils named a toy bear Muhammad.
High standards
Mr al Mubarak, who was at secondary school in Sudan when the country gained independence, said the orientation courses prevented mistakes people might otherwise have been unaware they were making.
He said: "They were very meticulous, and if someone failed they would not get their promotion or appointment until they resat the exam.
"The knowledge of the local traditions was an important component in the way the British were viewed in Sudan."
Mr al Mubarak said the courses, perhaps run through local colleges in Sudan with guest speakers from the British embassy, "should consist of educating somebody of what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in Muslim cultures".
"For example, it is not acceptable to hand somebody something with the left hand; if I hand somebody something I had better do it with my right hand."

Something like this I think would be very useful, not only for Sudan, but for other countries as well

He said the cultural reason behind this is that Sudanese Muslims use their right hand to eat with, and only their left to go to the toilet, hence it is seen as unclean.
Mr al Mubarak also gave the example of a mistake made by his teacher while he was a teenager at school.
In a class dealing with vocabulary for clothes, the teacher referred to the zips in coats and trousers.
In Arabic, the word for penis sounds almost exactly the same, except the "p" in zip is replaced with a "b".
It was also crucial for Westerners to understand the proper way to speak to women, who must be treated with deference and modesty, Mr al Mubarak said.
"Something like this I think would be very useful, not only for Sudan, but for other countries as well." A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: "The thing is we do offer advice... about the need to be aware of local customs." Providing courses was not part of the department's responsibility, she added.

WTF

If you read further down it explains that in Sudan they use their left hand to go to the toilet hence it is seen as unclean.

The point of this is that the what they are saying is that people coming to Sudan need to learn the culture and while most Sudanese may be Muslims, culture and the actual correct practices may be two different things and in the case of Sudan that is definitely the case especially with the right hand thing and the ridiculous teddy bear incident.

Anybody asking what a shame it is that somebody's life may depend on taking a Muslim culture test?

Shouldn't it be peaceful in a country that is mostly Muslim?

I think its a shame that it is being called a Muslim culture test because Islam and culture are two different things. It should be called simply a culture test or a Sudanese culture test.

Culture can be composed of things that are against the teaching of a particular religion.

In Islam, the religion is suppose to dictate the culture.

As the people of a Muslim society become better acquainted with the teaching of the Quran they are to removed those things from the society that are considered unlawful.

In the United States, there are elements of American pop culture that many be considered amoral or immoral like porn or homosexual ism for example and America is predominately Christian however I don't believe the Bible supports either one yet there are many Christians in the U.S. who live an unchrist like existence in regard of the culture they choose to follow.

But I would say this regardless of whether a person agrees or disagrees with a cultural test. If you are going to travel abroad and you value your life and the preservation of your human rights, I would advise you to learn the general laws, culture and customs before you go because the claim of ignorance may not help you get out of any predicament you get yourself in.

By the way, yes, it should be peaceful in a country that is mostly Muslim.

The fact that it is not tells me that while most of the people consider themselves Muslim, many of them are not behaving the way a Muslim is suppose to act.

Look at the corruption within the Sudanese Government.

Once you lose your humanity it makes no difference what religion you claim.

According to you logic MS, shouldn't the U.S. also be a peaceful country since it is mostly Christian?

Statements in Bold, you and I very much agree on and thank you for saying so. The Government seems to be run by extremists. They are not acting in the Muslim way they should be. But, while 80% of citizens of the US claim to be Christian, the US is not considered a Theocracy. I do not know much about Sudan, but is Separation of Church and State apart of their Culture like ours?
