Suicide Squad box office prediction - Part 1

They have interrupted productions before. Why announce more movies within the universe if they're so unhappy?

It would have cost them a fortune to cancel. They already lost money on BvS, they couldn't afford to cancel two major productions they'd already spent big money on.

This isn't like Sony where they announce plans to do more movies like the Sinister Six after disappointing stains like The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But then can cancel because they haven't sunk any money into it.

I think they're probably making a very fat profit off these movies, and that's why they're so commited with this universe. These movies don't need to break all sorts of records in order to be justified. They need to make a decent profit for the studio.

I know those who don't like the movies want to propagate the idea that this is all a big failure and the studio is super unhappy, but...i'm just not seeing it.

Very unlikely. WB were banking on making at least a billion for BvS. They released it in March, there was no other movie competition at the time. It had two of the biggest superhero movie icons ever heralding it. One of them had just had two movies which made a billion each. Yet together Batman and Superman couldn't make close to a billion.

In no universe is WB making a big fat profit or happy with that outcome.

I don't think anyone here would describe the DCEU as a financial failure, but it can reasonably be called a misfire. We also have numerous insider reports within the past year that shows quite a bit of disquiet over at WB over the DCEU's shortcomings. They know they're leaving money on the table, and I can guarantee you they're not pleased.

I highly doubt they lost money on BvS. You're not taking into account merchandise, toy sales, licensing, rentals, etc.

WB has lost money with super hero movies before and they weren't too eager to announce sequels for those.

Well BvS first Monday was Easter holiday so of course it dropped from Monday to Tuesday.

Btw I think the new MoS sequel indicates that WB is AT LEAST happy with MoS BO/ leg and the DCEU will surely go on.

4 years later and they are just getting started on MOS 2 because it looks like Cyborg and Green Lantern are not gonna happen is not so positive imo.

does anyone really want to see cyborg so bad ? can't he be like black widow or hawkeye. part of the team but no need for that stand alone movie.

Lol, what? Where is this coming from? The two have no links to each other whatsoever to even come up with a rational thought on how this movie is going to be made over the over. There's nothing to indicate such a thought. Very random to spin negativity for the sake of doing so.

The Joker just said they lost money on BvS. How did they lose money?

BvS UC is also making a ton of money.

But the topic here is SS box office. And everything so far is very positive, despite all the negativity surrounding the movie. The fact that rather than nosediving like BvS it has continued to do well so far,is a big posiitve. They are very different movies,BvS and SS,so to compare them makes no sense.

Exactly right, Flint;

Merchandising and rentals don't cut it for the disappointment of BvS.

Cyborg has been around for a long while (A Teen Titans fan favorite) and he fits into the criteria of today's technological world that it makes sense to include his importance to the League. We have yet to see what he's going to bring to the table and could very well easily be a breakout character in a cinema world full of new comic book characters. Cyborg could fit that criteria as the same has gone for the countless others. But that's off topic. Badly off topic.

Listen, the DCEU is certainly not a financial failure, but it aint a financial success runaway either.Lets just leave it at that.

Mark Hughes(who has a lot of legit inside info) has said that these movies are all being planned right now and are of major importance, apart from WW,JL,Aquaman and Flash :

"Cyborg, Batman, GLC, JL 2, MOS2, SS2 -- 10 films, 4 yrs."

Everything i've read until now suggest that when it's all said and done, they will make a profit off the movie. Tv deals, merchandise, rental is gonna make them enough to cover it. The movie cost around 400M. to make. Are you saying that with the BO numbers and all the other sources of income they can't make over 400M ? Highly doubt it.

Where have you read all this? I'm interested to see the sources.

WB is banking on Cyborg becoming an underdog fan favorite, which is a realistic prediction. There's a reason they gave him those lines in the JL teaser.

Yes I know that the DCEU isn't super successful so they can't afford to make movies about obscure characters like Cyborg and Green Lantern, but the fact that they announce Batman movie earlier this year and MoS 2 now also means that the DCEU is making money. So congratulations to fans who are happy with Cavill's Superman you'll see more of him in the next few years.

Whether they gained or lost money is not my point, as whatever profit they might see is substantially lower than what it could be. The undeniable fact is that these films are coming in well below expectations (BvS set the record for the steepest second weekend drop of any movie that opened over $100 million, and it did so with zero worthwhile competition) which I'm confident has led to many sleepless nights for the higher-ups at WB.

I think all bets are off for how SS will play this next weekend. It appears to be more audience friendly than BvS, but I'm not sure if movie goers are embracing it as much as some would like to believe. We'll just have to see.

It not hard for bad movies that make minimum profit to get sequels. Ghost Rider and Fantastic four movies did it.

I don't think you're seeing this through the eyes of the studio. A movie isn't only a success if it makes it all that amazing money you want it to make. The fact is that Superman movies and Batman movies have lost money in the past. The studio knows that this risk exists. The simple fact that it didn't lose money and actually made a profit can be seen as a good enough reason for the studio to be making more of these. Not every movie has to make enough profit to cover all the costs of the sequel. That's not how the industry works.

Yeah, it underperformed. But apparently it was successful enough to assure the continuation of the DCEU.

Well that's exactly what I meant: the DCEU makes profit so that's good news for fans who like the characters and the cast.

Cyborg's inclusion in the new 52 JL is what cemented his status here.

DCEU a financial failure? Simply ridiculous.
They are making a ton of money: MOS was a success even in DVD/Blu Ray, BvS is generating a good profit, SS is exceeding expectations.
Maybe they expected more, but for sure not from Suicide Squad.

Naysayers should find better arguments
