Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - - - - - Part 14

The Terminator sequels/reboots, Robocop, Die Hard (ironically featuring both Jai and Joel), and other movies that are supposed to be gritty feel off with PG-13.

Now as Killer Wolf said a very skilled director can pull it off. Nolan managed to capture tension as a substitute for carnage.

Ayer is going from End of Watch, Sabotage, Fury kind of resonate violence that reminded people of 80s/90s flicks to now PG-13 style.

I hope he can pull it off. But if we're getting a bunch of Foley deaths..

I just had hope that we'd be getting a Watchmen or Blade level of danger in this movie.

Then you should have donated a 100+million plus marketing to Warner Brothers. I'm sure they would make it R rated if you were paying for it.

Here are two WB films that came out this year.

San Andreas-PG-13

470.5million with mediocre reviews by the way.

Mad Max: Fury Road-R

374.7 with stellar reviews. It has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fury Road wasn't released in China to be fair and who knows, maybe it wasn't allowed?

But even outside of WB the top films of the year are full of PG-13 rated movies. Fact is, it is difficult to make a smash hit R rated film. Yes I know 50 Shades and Kingsman happened and so did American Sniper. I'm not saying that it is impossible is just very very difficult and thus risky. Should WB be that risky right now? I don't think so, especially after the terrible year they have had.

Would you be happier if Suicide Squad made 600 million, but was just a good movie?

Or would you rather it be a very good movie, but only made 400 million?

This is a legit question. I understand the studio has to do what it has to do. Just curious if fans want the best film possible or the movie to be its most profitable?

It all goes back to Ayer being skilled enough to pull it off.

Who's to say that Suicide Squad can't be a GREAT movie that just happens to be rated PG-13?

It's possible that gratuitous violence, cursing, or nudity would not necessarily add anything of value to the film we're already getting, the film that Ayer has been making from Day 1.

It's impossible for me to answer your "what would you rather have happen" question directly. It's impossible to answer your question because it is a loaded one. I see the assumption that the R rating would inevitably make it a better film. I'm not ready to say that without watching the movie. I will know if the R rating would have made it a better film in August so I'll get back to you on that one.

Furthermore using an R rating for Suicide Squad and then toning down the characters when they appear in PG-13 rated films would be odd and a bit confusing. What if you want Captain Boomerang to be a villain in the Flash movie? Do you make the film R rated to keep the stuff people liked about the character in Suicide Squad? What if you want the Joker and Harley in Justice League? Do you keep the hardcore stuff people loved in Suicide Squad and make Justice League R rated. The answer to those questions is no you wouldn't do that. It's not like they are going to keep up the characters being R rated so who cares if this film is PG-13?

EDIT: I'll say this, I always want any film to be as good as it can be of course.

I mean sequels to R-Rated films are now being made as pg-13, so I had no doubt that a DCCU film would likewise be pg-13.

I think some mistake my talking about the business aspect as my not caring about the quality, I care about the quality of the film first and foremost. I will not be delusional about the business aspect either though.

There can't be a R rated directors cut if the movie was never written and shot as one and Roven clearly said it was planned to be PG-13.

yes, otherwise we'd get something like the " unrated " version of live free or die hard...

Which means under 12s can't watch it unless they're with an adult.
is it the same definition in the US?
Also my 7 year old son has seen all of the Nolan Batman movies with me so at least I can take him with me.

So much of that had to do with its super-serious tone.

Which kinda sucks as it didn't get away with as much violence as some other films with a "lighter tone".

I reckon these guys will fill the void of literally faceless goons the Suicide Squad can rip through, without the audience feeling to much empathy, kind of like the orcs in Lotr, droids/storm troopers in Star Wars, chitari in Avengers, or even the Ultron bots in Avengers 2.

I would have liked for it to be Rated-R. Given the subject matter/characters, and who's directing it, if ANY WB/DC movie was going to be Rated-R, it'd have been this one.

And apparently Hollywood has short memories. They were already making really successful, both critically and financially, Rated-R movies 20-30 years ago, so the notion that it somehow cannot be done, is nonsense. Also, Hollywood is just flat out gutless in many ways when it comes to this sort of thing.

You don't even have to go back that far to find a succesful R rated film. The Matrix films came out in the early aughts. I'm not sure if those films were the last big R rated blockbusters.

Oh, indeed. Entire "Batman & Robin" was one long disturbing scene.

Does it really add anything to this story with R rated violence and sexual content? As long as they keep the blood in check they can get away with a lot.
We already know from the set photos and what not that Harley has serious sex appeal, but it doesn't need to go further than that.
Just rewatch the trailer and have your faith reassured.

The Nolan Batman films had people hanged, stabbed in the head with pencils, burned alive, shot, blown up, run over and so on while retaining a PG-13 classification.

Nolan got away with a lot due to how he cut, edited and framed the violence in his Batman films.
